Resilient elegance
After the first spray from my fresh bottle, date of manufacture 02/2023, first opening 11/2023, I am confused:
Full of anticipation, I was expecting a mineral, but later darker woody-leathery, long-lasting fragrance. At least, that's how I knew Ganymede from a sample from 2022, which I slowly and happily used up. The base note in particular lingered on my clothes for days. I really liked this dark woody touch and I had never smelled this base in this combination before. I only wore the small 5ml sample on Sundays because I respected this fragrance as something special. When I sprayed it on, I entered a cloud that made me feel elegant and resilient at the same time. The fragrance was also well received by other people and the sample quickly became a compliment getter. I didn't always love it because I often had to explain what kind of fragrance it was and some people would look and see the high price and that made me uncomfortable in some everyday situations (do you know the feeling?). All in all, it was a 10/10 fragrance for me at the time, my absolute favorite.
Full of anticipation, I got hold of a bottle on Black Friday this year for a good discount and I could hardly wait to finally have it in the bottle.
But what now? I spray the first puff from the bottle onto my skin, smell lots of saffron and violet and I also really like the mandarin. It feels relatively alcoholic, I smell a little wood and some powderiness. I'm hoping for the dark woody-leathery base note with some minerals, but it doesn't materialize. I spray more on the next day, but even now it doesn't materialize. Instead, I notice a lot more Iso-E-Super, paired with Hedione. Some Ambroxan also comes through, but somehow it's not what I remember from the other sample and what I fell in love with. The base is now somehow much softer woody and powdery, the projection is also nowhere near as strong and the longevity is also not as long. I'll be honest with you: I'm disappointed. Because I didn't get what I expected. Does that make it a bad fragrance? No, by no means. It is still uniquely interesting in the top and heart notes and the base is also pleasing. You can tell that the fragrance is well balanced. But it doesn't blow me away in the current version like it did in the sample I fell in love with.
What could be the reason for this? What happened to the fragrance?
Well, there could be several reasons. Instinctively, I immediately thought of a reformulation of the fragrance. In addition to the changes to the fragrance, the fact that bottles from 2023 onwards somehow only have 73% alcohol content on the packaging instead of 84%. The extrait was also launched in 2023. Perfumes are often toned down in order to market the more expensive extrait. Of course, this is just an assumption, but it has already been demonstrated in practice by other manufacturers. Another aspect is that the bottle is fresh. The maceration has therefore not yet taken place to the same extent as in the bottle from which my sample came, or in the sample container itself. Therefore, the fragrance cannot yet be as intense. But to be honest: when I buy a fragrance, I don't really want to have to wait another year before I can use it in its true splendor. I therefore hope that it matures a little, but if not, I'll let it sit wistfully. And finally: my expectations were very high, and it would be difficult for any fragrance in its price category to live up to them.
Nevertheless:
All in all, a great composition of this fragrance, a really clever and unique idea. I love it for the time we had together and am giving it another chance to prove itself. That's why it still gets a good rating.
