Favorite Holiday Gourmands

Favorite Holiday Gourmands

The weather is beginning to cool off where I live in the US (finally!), and with the holidays coming right up... it's time to bust out some of the most delicious gourmand fragrance profiles!

I've made a list (and "checked it twice" 😉🎅) of my top holiday gourmands. As a bonus, they're all cheapies - so you can use any saved money for gift giving instead.

1. "Christmas in New York | Demeter Fragrance Library / The Library Of Fragrance"

This hidden gem is my number one favorite holiday gourmand! It encapsulates a feeling of holiday coziness with its well-blended creamy eggnog, roasted chestnut, spices, and apples. I have yet to come across another gourmand that does this note combination justice.

2. Vanilla Bean Noel

Yes, the quality and formulation has been inconsistent over the years on this one - ranging from "mentholated" to "plastic" during its flop releases.

But if you snag one of the older bottles, you'll see what a high-quality marshmallow delight it can be. And if you're like me, part of the fun is the nostalgic feeling this brings - given how long it's been around, this is associated with many core holiday memories.

3. Orange Sanguine

To me, this is tied to a very specific moment in time: cutting into the skin of a fresh orange that came in my stocking on Christmas morning, and sitting next to a fresh, live Christmas tree.

While there isn't pine or fir in this, there is a woody element with a hint of spice - and combined with the fresh-squeezed candied citrus, really does seem like a bright Christmas morning. Dry-down has a soapy feeling, leaving you refreshed and squeaky-clean.

4. Bombshell Magic

True to its name, this really is magical! I know that juniper berry isn't listed, and neither is pine - but to me it smells like a chilled juniper berry wreath in the winter, with a hint of blackberry + sexy musk.

This wears beautifully in cold weather, lasts forever + projects powerfully, and is in my top favorite fragrances of all time. (I also normally avoid patchouli, but it's gorgeous here.)

5. Strawberry Snowflakes

It was hard to narrow down what to include, as there are also gourmand classics like Twisted Peppermint , Hot Cocoa & Cream (2018) , Winter Candy Apple , etc.

But Strawberry Snowflakes is one of my favorite fragrances for this time of year - as it stands apart from the typical minty, chocolate, spicy, and creamy holiday scents.

The bergamot gives this blend a unique "icy" frosted strawberry cookie feel, and differs from the more common Strawberry Pound Cake or other lactonic/cake strawberry profiles. While a bit synthetic, it gives me delicious "pink ice princess" vibes.

(Note: this year's version is reformulated and lacks the same quality/vibrance of the one pictured here - so it's worth getting the older version.)

If you have any other favorite holiday gourmand cheapies (especially those tied to specific memories), I'd love to hear about them in the comments below!

Wishing you a very merry gourmand holiday season 🍰🎅

@Tzapan my apologies for my delay in responding! I came back to this article to find something about a particular fragrance, and only just now noticed your comment. I haven't yet tested Youth Dew, but have heard excellent things about it in relation to the holidays - so I've added it to my list to test. Thank you for the recommendation, and for taking the time to comment - I appreciate it!

This is such a helpful article and the banner graphic is so cute and perfect! ❤️
I agree #Hot Cocoa and Cream and #Winter candy apple are such great classic holiday scents too. I've never sniffed #Orange Sanguine but now I'm curious.
Happy Holidays! 🎅❤️

@Dmbfaninmass agreed 😊 Atelier Cologne seems to do a great job with their citrus fragrances, all of the ones I've sampled are very realistic and vibrant! Are there any other Atelier Cologne citrus fragrances you also enjoy?

@Emilyforest thank you so much for your compliments, always means a lot to me to have your support! 🙏🥰 Speaking of Hot Cocoa & Cream - did you see that the 2023 version supposedly has different notes from previous years? Orange Sanguine is definitely so nice - I'll have to see if I still have a sample, to send you some to try! Happy holidays to you too ❤️

Orange Sanguine is amazing! I’d heard and read about the photorealism and I must admit for those who view perfumery as an art form through a lens of the transportive nature of olfactive photorealism, I think the only time I’ve smelled such a juicy orange is when I’m prepping my daily smoothie that includes an orange!! Quite stunningly and deliciously accurate!

Great article! The weather here in the northeast US doesn’t seem to know what it wants to do! A few years back, I had been on the hunt for scents that reminded me of the holidays. At the time my hunt began, I wasn’t sure what I was looking for other than wanting something that would cause association with a pine or fir tree without feeling too pine-sol to my nose. My first choice was Ecstasy by Tiziana Terenzi. Love this one - smoke, balsamic / piney woods, florals, and amber. It reminds me of sitting in a front pew near floral displays, and a decorated tree while the priest wafts incense during Christmas Eve mass. My second adventure was to find a Christmassy gourmand. I went for Winter of 99 by Kerosene. Literally my teen years Christmases in the 90s! Family all alive and gathered with grandma’s molasses cookies and a fresh glass of my dad’s fave - eggnog. Takes me back to when the holidays still had some glimmer of magic and family gathered! Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!

@Gourmandgrl olfactive scent memory is amazing! I always had a selection of about a dozen or more fragrances from high school through my 30s and they still hit a nostalgia button. Falling down the niche rabbit hole, for me was magical, in comparison. No longer was it just fragrances reminding me of a period cause that was what I, or another, wore, causing memory recall of years gone by, but fragrances that were photorealistic to things, places, and time. Fairly certain Kerosene was the first house I’d tried that really hit that new sweet spot. My first order was Winter of 99 and Walk the Sea and I must admit I was blown away by Walk the Sea as well. It was the first time I’d smelled a summery beachy scent that didn’t smell overly aquatic and fresh or like sun tan lotion, but legitimately made me feel like I was sitting on the beach and smelling the salty, kelpy ocean air. John Pegg and so many others are just magical artists! I def gotta try Christmas in NY! Hope u have a stellar day!

@Dmbfaninmass thanks so much for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts + experiences, it's so fun being on a "trip back in time" to think of scents associated with nostalgia! 🎄 I haven't tried Ecstasy, but it sounds like such a unique fragrance with the specific tie-in to Christmas Eve mass. Winter of 99 is a classic, and I'm amazed you get eggnog from it too - if you like eggnog-specific blends, you might also enjoy Demeter's Christmas in New York. So glad you were able to remember better times - reminiscing with fragrances is truly magical! 🎅✨

Side note, Orange Sanguine is magical. So darn photorealistic! I could picture myself in your shoes on Christmas morning peeling an Orange just reading your description! Stellar and heartwarming :) a couple others I really enjoy as Christmas approaches are Noir Exquise by L’Artisan Perfumeur and 1899 Hemingway by Histoire de Parfums. I’m told that Noir is similar to By the Fireplace, so maybe semi-gourmandish, and that 1899 is similar to Spicebomb. My mind is now reeling thinking about fragrances that represent different olfactive aspects of the Christmas season and I can’t thank you enough! Considering over the last 15 years Christmas went from an event-filled time of joy surrounded by family and get togethers to just being another day without much to do other than channel surf and order Chinese after several family members passed, your post put a hop in my step and memory laden smile on my face so thank you!

What a nice and sweet article. All the aromas seem delicious to me, thank you very much☺️💗

Hello again @Gourmandgrl , I like the classic Trêsor, from 1990. I can tell you that I like everything. It is a perfume with a very beautiful and very warm personality. You can tell that it has been reformulated, because I still have a bottle from 1990 and there are differences in intensity and nuances, but it still smells very good and continues to maintain its essence.
I wrote a review of both perfumes. They are both very different but charming.
🥰❤️

@Azahar81 aww that is so kind of you to say, thank you so much for your sweet compliment! 🥰 I still have never tried Juliette has a Gun, I am clearly behind in my sampling - I'll have to add it to my list! Which Trêsor do you love most, and what do you love about it? Appreciate you sharing your thoughts ❤️

ooh, that Orange Sanguine sounds amazing. I like Hidden Fantasy for a citrusy holiday-y vibe, but to me it's not gourmand... maybe if it didn't have the wood in it.
I buy minis of body mists whenever possible... so I own this year's version of Strawberry Snowflakes. I don't think I'd wanna commit to a full bottle even if the older one is better, haha. I need to give it some more tries, I've only tested it once at the store and then once here at home. it is one I'm mixed on so far.
as far as holiday gourmands go, the only one I really like is that Pink Macaron, but I'd love a really nice cranberry-forward scent. that actually smells bitter like cranberry.

I'd love to try Orange Sanguine if I ever can! :') yeah Hidden Fantasy is lovely, but I find it to be relatively short-lived. but not so bad, since it's pretty cheap. totally worth trying tho, for sure. nice to know there's a mini of the old one, I was only seeing the full size bottle on eBay so I wasn't sure. they're not the most consistent with minis, so I never know hahaaaaaaa. Pink Macaron is... a very soft sort of sweetness, with cranberry hiding underneath. if you put your nose close to where you spray it, the cranberry comes across a bit stronger. it's not all too realistic. I was interested in Big Pony 2 for women, but after enough reviews saying it wasn't really like cranberry, I decided to skip that. I couldn't say it specifically smells like macaron, but it's enjoyable. I've never heard of that Rouge Elixir No. 02 but that sounds pretty good! not sure I could convince myself to blind buy it, but it does sound good.

@MOONTRIPS p.s./part 2 to the previous comment - I forgot about VS Rouge Elixir No. 2 mist, have you tried it? I enjoy the cranberry in that one a lot!
GourmandgrlGourmandgrl 2 years ago
@MOONTRIPS Orange Sanguine is truly amazing and so unique - if you end up trying it, I'd love to hear your thoughts! I've never tested Hidden Fantasy but have heard similar things, of the holiday citrus feel - I'll have to add that to my list; appreciate your rec. ❤️ They made a mini of the pink faceted bottle, I have one! I tested this year's version 2 different times in store and I don't blame you for being "mixed" about it; it was so "meh" to me in comparison to last year's. I don't know if I've ever tried Pink Macaron - I saw the scent notes, but what does it smell like to you? I've been hunting for a realistic cranberry-forward scent too (I feel like cranberries in fragrance often come across too "salty" and synthetic), would love to hear if you find anything - I'll let you know if I find anything, too! 🤗
