In Defense of "Basic" Fragrances
One of the things I love most about the fragrance world, is how vast the difference between scent profiles can be - and how our tastes all vary from each other. Despite the value in diversity, I've seen many comments over the years from those who belittle "basic" fragrances.
What classifies a fragrance as "basic", and why does this draw a negative connotation?
It's mass-appealing for a reason
When I hear the term "basic" being used to describe a fragrance, it seems to refer to anything that appeals to the masses - or "mainstream, popular, and trending". This is sometimes painted as a negative quality, when many fragrance enthusiasts prioritize individuality - searching for the next fragrance that no one has heard about, in a desire to stand apart from the crowd.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to be unique. But there's also something to be said for mass-appeal - as a fragrance wouldn't appeal to the masses to begin with, if there wasn't anything worth paying attention to. So what contributes towards a fragrance becoming so popular?

Let's assume that popularity = high-selling (total number of bottles sold). To reach a high number of bottles sold, a fragrance must first have a well-constructed fragrance profile. The notes need to be generally pleasant to a wide consumer base, and cannot be too "jarring" or off-putting - otherwise it risks eliminating potential buyers. This means that to have a high volume of bottles sold, a fragrance must be appealing to a large amount of people.
So it could be argued that a fragrance is "basic", when it: 1) is a well-composed blend, 2) is appealing to a large number of consumers, and 3) can sell successfully, or in high-volume. This often includes "cheapie" or budget-focused fragrances, to be accessible for more customers.
The talent behind the scenes
I'm a firm believer that there are excellent fragrance compositions in every fragrance type - from "cheapie" to niche. Finding quality across the fragrance spectrum wouldn't be possible without the talent behind the scenes - and even some of the most renowned perfumers have created not just top niche blends, but also more budget-friendly choices.
While this does demonstrate versatility of a perfumer's range, it also proves something else: that some of the most discerning and talented noses are the same creators of even the most "basic" of fragrance choices. Meaning, "basic" does not always equate to sacrificing quality.
Alexis Grugeon is one of the noses behind:
Céline Barel is one of the noses behind:
David Apel is one of the noses behind:
Black Orchid Eau de Parfum
Freckled and Beautiful
Sunflowers Eau de Toilette
Brown Sugar & Fig Eau de Toilette

Bargains can be breathtaking, too
While there are many unique offerings among the more expensive fragrances, "basic" blends can sometimes blow these out of the water.
As an example: I love vanilla, but am very selective about vanilla-forward fragrances. I've tried plenty of popular, "higher-quality" vanillas - including Bianco Latte ,
Tihota , and
Escapade Gourmande , just to name a few. But none of them left an impression on me, in the way
Fresh Vanilla Blossoms has.

You're probably thinking that there's no way a body mist from Bath & Body Works could compare to anything high-end - but before you claim "fragrance blasphemy", please first give Fresh Vanilla Blossoms a try. It envelops you in a creamy hug of velvety vanilla, fresh florals, cozy sandalwood, and smooth suede - with impressive longevity and projection. It has become my signature scent, and I find it so comforting and addictive. This mist is just one example that quality fragrances do not always come in expensive packages!
Sometimes "simple" is more meaningful
Many might say, "But 'basic' fragrances are too simple for my taste." Since fragrance is such an individual choice, you could want something more complex. That's okay! But there's nothing wrong with simplicity, either - and sometimes, it holds more power and meaning.
"Jasmine | Demeter Fragrance Library / The Library Of Fragrance" is one of these fragrances for me. It takes me immediately back to warm summer nights during my childhood. Running barefoot on the concrete sidewalks, playing hide and seek in the front yards of nearby homes with the other neighborhood kids - and hiding behind bushes, often right next to the night-blooming jasmine. I felt completely uninhibited, without a care in the world - and I experience this magic again, with just one spritz.

Yes, this is a "simple" scent - comprised of only one fragrance note. But the uncomplicated nature of it is part of what brings back a feeling of pure joy - allowing me to relish in the associated memories of simpler times, without any other notes to dilute it.
Community over competition
I hope to see more acknowledgment of the merit behind mass-appealing, accessible, and/or uncomplicated scent creations. Quality does not always mean an expensive price, as even the most esteemed perfumers have created affordable fragrances.
Scent preference may be subjective - but the world of fragrance does not need to be a competition of the "most elite", as there is excellence in every fragrance category. Those who enjoy the so-called "basic" blends, can be just as discerning of quality and beauty - in the same way any other fragrance enthusiast might be.
Could we, without relentlessly criticizing, let people have their pumpkin spice, and avocado toast, and their fandoms, and their D&D, and their too-early-Halloween-decorations, and whatever little harmless things in which they've managed to find a tiny shriveled flower of joy? We're all just trying to survive.

But there shouldnt be any shame in liking more popular fragrances that some may call basic, that’s no fun!
Yes so true, each person's experience is different - and agreed, there should be no shame for what anyone enjoys.
That was the hope for the article, to lessen stigma around "basic" scents and show how they can be just as enjoyable as any other scent.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, it means a lot to me! 🤗
Green Tea is amazing... one of my favorite things ever. it's cheap and well-known and that's why I know it and why I bought it! Arabian fragrances becoming so known online are the reason I've tried those, and what I have is lovely. I only have super budget picks and dupes, but they're great. most of the Al Rehab scents I've tried have been winners. Bath and Body Works and Victoria's Secret have great stuff! Pure Seduction may be nothing special, but I love the scent. Japanese Cherry Blossom is something that I enjoy, if only because it's comfy and nostalgic. both brands do great seasonal stuff in general.
I like getting the best bang for my buck and am restrictive on what I'll spend on fragrance in general. but even expensive stuff considered niche can be considered basic for gaining popularity. so... I think there's no real winning and it doesn't matter.
I'm with you in looking for the most bang for your buck - it's always nice getting a good deal. The ones you mentioned are all excellent choices!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! 🤗
Agua Lavanda Puig -- SO cheap ($15 US for a BIG bottle) but so calming in extreme heat
Elizabeth Arden Green Tea (Francis Kurkdjian) and its many varieties - especially Green Tea Mimosa (nose unknown), Green Tea Cherry Blossom (Rodrigo Flores-Roux) and Lavender (nose unknown) EA 5th Avenue (Ann Gottlieb) is amazing in springtime, too!
Elizabeth Arden White Tea (Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Guillaume Flavigny, Caroline Sabas) (I like Bvlgari Au The Blanc (Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud) a teeny bit better, but it's discontinued and costs many times more.)
Ellen Tracy Bronze (Pierre Negrin) - lemon meringue pie and violets! Unbelievably cheap on eBay -- why?
I feel so fortunate to have these options that cost so little I can slap them on as much as I want.
I completely agree with you - I prefer less-complex fragrances in the summer, too. I gravitate towards more "aquatic" fragrances that can be spritzed on as a refresher, and don't last too long or else they can feel suffocating! 😅
I appreciate all your recommendations for the extreme heat - we all need more from this category!
Some of these I haven't tested, but they sound amazing - especially Ellen Tracy Bronze; sign me up for anything lemon meringue pie, delicious! 🍋
It's so nice having fragrances you don't have to worry about making a dent in, like you said - when it's affordable, there's no stress about reapplication!
Thank you for commenting, I appreciate it! 😊
I agree with you - just part of the journey, which is part of what makes it fun.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and for your kind words, I really appreciate it! 😊
VLJ is such a classic - it wouldn't be around this long, if it weren't such a crowd pleaser. So that is an excellent choice 😊I can see why you love it so much!
But it is not what I will reach for when I want something that will change on my skin over hours. I think it's a bit of a mood thing for me - do I want to always smell like this, or do I want it to be a journey over the day. How complicated am I feeling.
"Simple" scents are my no brainer, easy reach fragrances that will work for any occasion.
This post was referring to when the term is used as a way to look down on someone else. Such as, "Their taste is so basic - all they like are designer fragrances." (Or pumpkin spice lattes, as Urban Dictionary said above.)
There's nothing wrong with reaching for something unique, complex, or expensive - and I'm glad you enjoy these, too!
I've just seen some comments (not from you at all), directed towards those who enjoy bargain blends - claiming they have "questionable taste" or lack ability to discern fragrances, because of their preferences or budget.
So my goal was to share how "basic" fragrances can still have merit behind them - just as the pricier, niche, or "unusual" creations do.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts, I really appreciate it! 😊
Are there any "simple" scents that you're enjoying lately, more than others?

La Perla La Mia Perla (Honorine Blanc)
Katy Perry Indi (Caroline Sabas)
Lolita Lempicka Lolitaland (Francis Kurkdijan)
JLo JLuxe (Fabrice Pellegrin)

I'm with you - while I've sampled designer/luxury/niche/expensive fragrances, I find myself gravitating towards the affordable blends more too.
It's definitely thrilling to discover a bargain gem! You have great taste, so many of these are fan-favorites for a reason.
I just took a peek at La Mia Perla, and your description of it sounds beautiful - so I'm adding this to my list now, thanks to you! Is it one you plan to get a full bottle of, or only just sampled?
I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, and enjoyed reading your thoughts - thank you so much!
(Though I do want to say that I really love Tihota and Escapade Gourmande as two of my favorite vanillas)
Agreed completely - I wish for the same thing. It's helpful to share honest thoughts about a fragrance you dislike - but it's shortsighted to put down others' taste as a whole, for enjoying what you don't.
You're absolutely right, fragrance is totally subjective - and "basic" fragrances are mass-appealing for a reason!
I'm glad you enjoy Tihota and Escapade Gourmande - they're high quality vanillas, so you clearly have good taste! I wish they worked for me too - but I still love hearing about how well they work for others.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, I look up to you and enjoy reading your posts as well - so it means a lot to me!
Your friend's statement about the price not guaranteeing quality is very accurate - plus their professional experience of selling perfumes speaks further to this.
I haven't tried many of Avon's offerings, so I'll have to look into them more as I'm always interested in a quality bargain. Are there any in particular you'd recommend?
I appreciated getting to hear what you love, and I agree - the "basics" are pleasurable enough for me, too. You don't necessarily need to sample the more expensive ones, to know that the more affordable options are still high quality - all that matters, is you enjoy them!
That was my hope in writing this - to outline the quality + value of these fragrances, that people are referring to as "basic".
I'm with you - simplistic is another great way to view them; that's why I included the section on how "simple" can actually be more meaningful/powerful. So we are definitely in agreement! 🙌
I hope that more will see the merit behind these not-so-"basic" fragrances, in time.
I enjoyed hearing your thoughts, and appreciate you taking the time to comment + sharing your favorite "simplistic" fragrances! 😊
