Material misses the mark
For me, Material misses the mark as an exploration of vanilla, and as a tribute to Material Girl era Madonna.

Material is a quiet exploration of resins, patchouli and yes, vanilla, but the leathery and boozy aspects. It is devoid of sweetness, and both sillage and longevity are shockingly lacking, especially considering Amouage's historical powerhouse scents. Not to mention the cost. Had it been released as what it is, high quality natural materials that do not have the synthetic boost to provide projection or longevity...well I likely still would take a hard pass, but I could have appreciated the sample more. Having gotten interested on the premise of a grand exploration of vanilla, this was a complete disappointment.

Once I'd given up the ghost of a voluptuous vanilla bombshell, I was able to appreciate and enjoy the dry skinscent; Predominantly a leathery patchouli labdanum with benzoin after very brief boozy dry vanilla opening. Unisex, with a masculine edge. Many niche houses have done similar, with lower price tag.

Stunning adult unisex gourmand
Absolutely loving Darren Alan's discovery set.
Opens boozy with slight fruit, like a spiced brandy, along with sweet pipe tobacco, warm pitchy wood and honeyed vanilla. The honey is very beeswax-y, not cloying in the slightest. Truly unisex, a very adult gourmand. Somewhat brings to mind Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, but more complex and smoother. think I need a bottle of this.

Interesting offering
I'm halfway through sampling eldo's line. I've been quite surprised by how rose centric the house is, and fairly let down on performance, with some notable exceptions.

Eau de Protection is one such exception; opens with bright ginger, pepper and Rose.
I'm not usually a rose fan, but the ginger and pepper really made the opening beautiful, fresh and unisex. This was love on first spritz.

Once the ginger and pepper died off, there was about 2 hours of fairly boring rose, and then suddenly the fragrance went through a fascinating and unexpected shift, that gave a fleeting impression of Zoologist's discontinued original Dodo, a dewy green floral resinous explosion that settled into an incredibly beautiful drydown of sweet benzoin patchouli (the cocoa is there but simply provides a fluffy, cozy powdery sweetness, much like the patchouli-cocoa of Angel, but not synthetic or aldehydic if that makes sense).

Absolutely love the opening and the drydown enough to suffer through the boring rose phase, it's a nice rose, just not interesting. But the drydown is to die for, and at 6 hours is still projecting nicely.
