Material is not usually named in the top echelon of Amouage fragrances but I think that it is a great addition to the roster. Opening with a slightly pungent peppery incense and patchouli, it settles into a sweeter amber tone for the rest of its lifespan. Maybe it is because I know the perfumer is the same, but it seems like the vanilla note of the amber accord (traditionally vanilla, benzoin, and labdanum, as it seems to be in this fragrance) is very similar to the vanilla note in Ani Extrait de Parfum; that ginger/cardamom feel is there even if it is not present in the note breakdown. The oud in the base is not distinguishable but there is a soft woody element in the drydown as well. Really a great fragrance all-around and deserves to be in the running with "Grand Soir | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" and Ambre sultan Eau de Parfum as a classic amber perfume. Longevity is very good while sillage is intimate. As with most Amouage fragrances, it is readily available on discount sites and at ~160 USD, it is great value for money.

Material Girl or Guy

This fragrance is nice it reminds me of grand soir but more resinous-esq. I don't find it incredibly unique but it's lasting power is great. The hefty price tag is not justifiable for me, but I do understand the appeal... I don't think it's groundbreaking, but I do think it's a scent that would garner the person wearing it compliments !

Material misses the mark

For me, Material misses the mark as an exploration of vanilla, and as a tribute to Material Girl era Madonna.

Material is a quiet exploration of resins, patchouli and yes, vanilla, but the leathery and boozy aspects. It is devoid of sweetness, and both sillage and longevity are shockingly lacking, especially considering Amouage's historical powerhouse scents. Not to mention the cost. Had it been released as what it is, high quality natural materials that do not have the synthetic boost to provide projection or longevity...well I likely still would take a hard pass, but I could have appreciated the sample more. Having gotten interested on the premise of a grand exploration of vanilla, this was a complete disappointment.

Once I'd given up the ghost of a voluptuous vanilla bombshell, I was able to appreciate and enjoy the dry skinscent; Predominantly a leathery patchouli labdanum with benzoin after very brief boozy dry vanilla opening. Unisex, with a masculine edge. Many niche houses have done similar, with lower price tag.

Sweet, oriental, and good

Material by Amouage is a very well-made, sweet, oriental fragrance enriched with warm, enveloping woody notes. The scent feels deep, smooth, and comforting, with impressive longevity. It creates an elegant aura and leaves a moderate, refined, graceful trail that feels beautifully and truly balanced.

Solid scent, but not worth the price

Yesterday I received my sample of Material. I was once again very curious, as Boundless was not really convincing. The more I hoped that Material could impress. Unfortunately, my expectations were disappointed again, but this time the disappointment was not as great because Material is definitely more unique than Boundless. However, I do not see any similarity to Dior Bois d‘Argent, as the sweetness and fluffiness are not present in Material.

Now to the scent itself: Here I can perceive resins very well, in this case elm resin. After 20-30 minutes, the resin note gives way a bit to the woody notes and the gentle vanilla note. The sweetness is further supported by benzoin and a soft tonka bean. As the scent develops, Material remains very linear. I would describe Material as resinous, woody, sweet. The focus is clearly on the resinous DNA.

The next point is my criticism: I simply expected more here. There is just something special missing. There are some comparable scents in this category, for example Xerjoff Ivory Route. Unfortunately, I only see Material as an average resinous scent that simply does not manage to stand out. I find this very unfortunate, as the price is very high and with Amouage I am simply spoiled and expect something special and unique like Interlude Man. Material is just a bit too quiet for me. The sillage is rather weak for an Amouage. I must unfortunately note that since Amouage has not released any more fragrance pairs, the wow factor has diminished for me. The perfumes seem too much tailored to unisex, and thus the special quality seems to have been lost.
