Skin like armor
Fresh, pleasant, harmless. I've been thinking for a long time about what to write about this fragrance, but since fresh scents really have to be quite extraordinary to stimulate my imagination, I just feel… uninspired.

Although it is beautifully crafted! Especially very balanced, a cool floral bouquet with fruity hints, not sweet or sticky at all. I attribute the aquatic freshness to the orchid, which dominates the floral trio. From the base note, nothing comes through for me except a hint of musk, which is so subtle that it could also be a figment of my imagination.

Granhand describes the scent like this:
Scent of a cool and clean sea breeze.
Sitting on a surf board, I make waves on the sea with my legs. I see the bottom of the sea through the waves reflecting the sun. I wonder about the deep ocean although I was just in it. As I climb down the surf board, the coldness enamors my body. I take a short breath and swim into the ocean.

I don't feel the sun enough in the scent to accept this image. For me, it feels more like wearing a short dress on a day between spring and summer, even though it’s still too cold for that. The dew drops in the grass feel icy, and a gust of wind pulls at every pore of my skin, which longs for warm sun rays, forming a hard goosebumps.

Bevis, the Forest is Burning
Whenever I hear the word Lumberjack, I think of Monty Python's Lumberjack Song: He’s a lumberjack and he’s ok, he sleeps all night and he works all day! Do you feel the same way?

This fragrance is clearly for men. And specifically for older men.
I’m not really a fan of categorizing perfumes so distinctly by gender or age group. I also enjoy wearing fragrances that are labeled as men's perfumes, like Dior Homme or Shams Oud. And my female colleague constantly tells me: You smell like a rich old woman again. Which, by the way, does not apply to me.

Lumberjack is a very woody-resinous scent that quickly develops a sharp smoky note. For me, it’s absolutely unbearable, and I wouldn’t want to smell it on a man I want to get close to.
The following situation describes the scent most accurately:
You have a bit of a crush on that one professor who always gives such fascinating lectures. He’s a bit older, but the gray strands and the laugh lines around his eyes suit him incredibly well. He moves dynamically and gracefully, and his way of speaking is engaging. And gradually, you start to swoon, wishing you could cuddle with him over a glass of red wine. The infatuation lasts right up until the day you want to discuss the topic of your term paper a little more closely. You go to his office after the lecture and suddenly realize - he smells … totally old! Yikes and goodness, what was I thinking? The infatuation dissipates like dandelion seeds in the wind.
From today on, this rude awakening will be known to me as the “Lumberjack Effect.”

The Monkey Awakens
Jane Goodall is not necessarily one of my favorites from Granhand, as I am a fan of oriental or floral scents. But it will be thoroughly tested anyway! Because the perfumes from Granhand are certainly interesting.

The name Jane Goodall is probably known to most. She is a British primatologist who has been gathering insights into the lives of chimpanzees like no other since the 1960s.

Every animal species has its own, unmistakable scent. Who doesn't know how a dog or a horse smells, and we can identify these scents among hundreds.
I know how other great apes, namely orangutans, smell. Definitely different from Jane Goodall, but I can very well imagine that chimpanzees smell like this perfume. And that is quite positive and entirely serious, without the slightest hint of irony.

The top note is purely citrus. Bergamot is omitted, grapefruit, lemon, and tangerine are finely balanced, so that none of the three dominates. Underneath, there is a herbal shimmer; I have the impression that the basil is perceptible even before the blackcurrant. Up to this point, it is a fresh, crisp, and bitter scent.
A cool iris takes over from the citrus notes, which become somewhat duller as the fragrance develops.
In the base, a bit of warmth comes through, probably from the patchouli, which I cannot distinctly smell.

Jane Goodall does not have animalistic notes, but simply a very special, unmistakable character. Fresh-crisp, bitter, herbal, woody, and a little warm. That’s exactly how I imagine the body odor of a chimpanzee. It’s time for a visit to the zoo to check this out. Or for a trip directly into the African rainforest!

Dryness Has a Name
Some fragrances manage to convey more than just olfactory sensory impressions. Finn Juhl is one of them; it is: dry. Bone dry. Dry like a desert wind. So dry that it cracks like parched wood. I love dry scents and have been searching for the ideal wood fragrance for a long time.

In the top note, a green yet fruity fig dominates. The woody notes already break through and perfectly complement the fig, preventing it from developing any stickiness or excessive sweetness. At the same time, the fig awakens the wood and, together with the bergamot, gives it an organic liveliness.
The heart note remains very subtle in the background, allowing the wood to gain depth and warmth through it.
As the fragrance evolves, all components gradually fade, a very slightly smoky note breaks through, and the wood becomes drier and drier and drier…

The first branch of Granhand has opened in Bukchon, a still-inhabited and very well-maintained neighborhood of Seoul, where only the traditional Korean Hanok houses exist. Finn Juhl fits perfectly into the narrow alleys lined with ornate walls, carved wooden beams, archways, and massive wooden doors.

When I received the sample pack, the employee asked me what my favorite fragrance was. I named Finn Juhl without hesitation. He gifted me a scented sachet along with the samples, which has been scenting my sweaters in the closet for six months now and brings me good mood every day.
The employee was not surprised that I liked Finn Juhl so much. This fragrance was chosen by Chanel to line the catwalk with scented candles at Seoul Fashion Week.

Finn Juhl, like many fragrances from Granhand, is named after a real person. Finn Juhl was a Danish designer who significantly influenced Scandinavian design. His chairs, in particular, are known worldwide. They are characterized by organically curved and pleasantly rounded frames with comfortable leather seats. They are - just like the fragrance - exactly to my taste.

Greetings from the Summer Blanket
Soon it will be winter. And what could be better to chase away the chill than to take an olfactory short trip back to August? Ester Dean, come to my side, I need you for this! A few drops on my wrist and…

I stand in front of my wardrobe and want to tidy up a bit. Everything is taken out, even from the farthest corner. Suddenly, I have it in my hand, the summer blanket! When did I last use it? I really should wash it thoroughly, there are stains, sand, and grasses everywhere...
Memories of the last time I was in the park with my friends in summer. What did we do there? I don’t even have to think about it, I just need to smell!

We sat on a large meadow in the afternoon. My friend once again applied too much of that squeaky fresh clean-grapefruit-floral summer scent… but it doesn’t matter, I’m not sitting right next to her. Besides, I smell my delicious new sunscreen and the twig from the currant bush that I picked and tucked away on the way.
The sun has warmed the meadow very well, the grass is even starting to dry out a bit in some places. I’m sweating lightly, but the warmth is so pleasant! I briefly nod off and dream of lush, swaying bellflowers dancing in the wind.

Slowly, the sun sets. The group of gentlemen who were grilling next to us is slowly cleaning up. I also roll up my blanket and head home through the warm evening.
Now the summer blanket is in my closet and has stored all these scents. The intention to wash the blanket is forgotten; this fragrance is one you want to hold onto!

Et voilà, that is Ester Dean!
