Lavender Meets Caramel: “Shade of Blue” by Une Nuit Nomade

Shade of Blue is a fragrance of contrasts — lavender captured at the exact moment the sun dips below the horizon, when its powdery freshness grows rounder, almost caramelised.

“Shade of Blue” opens with the citrusy freshness of bergamot, accompanied by the warm, resinous notes of myrrh. As the fragrance unfolds, lavender takes center stage: lavender absolute, lavender, and lavandin bring floral, aromatic, and slightly herbaceous facets to the composition. With tonka bean absolute, the fragrance becomes increasingly soft and warm, before caramel adds a creamy sweetness and leads the lavender into a gently gourmand finish.

The fragrance was created by perfumer Marine Ipert, who also associates lavender with personal memories. The fragrance reminds her of her childhood in the south of France. For “Shade of Blue”, she therefore worked with different varieties of lavender to capture the raw material’s various facets. Bergamot adds freshness, while tonka bean lends the lavender more depth. Caramel, however, serves as the true counterpoint.

At the heart of the creation lies, above all, a powerful and unexpected encounter between lavender and caramel. Two very different worlds that I chose to bring into contrast: on one side, an aromatic signature, fresh and refined; on the other, a warm, generous and gourmand quality.

An Evening on the Valensole Plateau

The Plateau de Valensole in Provence, with its vast lavender fields, served as inspiration. The fragrance is meant to capture the atmosphere of twilight, when the vibrant mauve of the flowers slowly gives way to cooler shades of blue and the last rays of the sun bathe the landscape in warm, golden light.

The interplay of cool and warm nuances continues in the composition: the aromatic, herbaceous, and powdery lavender gradually gains warmth and reveals soft, caramelized facets. The goal of the brand’s founders, Alexandra Cubizolles and Philippe Solas: to re-explore the multifaceted nature of lavender and contrast its modern, aromatic side with a gourmand-like creaminess.

“Shade of Blue” kicks off the new “Eau de Méditerranée” collection, with which Une Nuit Nomade transforms France and the Mediterranean region into the new destination of its fragrance universe.
