Spicy, Fruity, Warm: “Safran Lumiere” by the Merchant of Venice

With “Safran Lumière” is a new unisex fragrance from the Venetian perfume house The Merchant of Venice presents a new unisex fragrance in which spicy saffron meets strawberry, incense, and bourbon vanilla.

“Safran Lumière” opens with a fruity-spicy top note of strawberry, saffron, and Indian cardamom Orpur®. The heart reveals earthy and woody nuances of Indian cypriol Orpur®, sandalwood, and Somali frankincense Orpur®, accompanied by powdery iris. In the base, notes of Ambrofix, Bourbon vanilla Orpur®, and a candy accord lend the fragrance a warm, gourmand-sweet depth.

Orpur®—which means “pure gold” in French—is a seal of quality from the fragrance manufacturer Givaudan for select natural raw materials of the highest quality. The selection is based on defined criteria, which include not only olfactory quality but also origin and sustainable sourcing.

The fragrance was created by Alessandro Olmo. The Italian perfumer has been with Givaudan since 2020 and completed his training at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery. His previous creations include “Dark Mystery” and “Golden Yuzu” for Novellista as well as “Ocean” for North Sails. He also developed “Lussino Essence” for The Merchant of Venice.

Venetian Glass Art Meets Perfumery

“Safran Lumière” is part of the “Murano Art” collection, which is inspired by Venetian perfumery and glass art. The line is characterized by black-lacquered bottles featuring colorful murrine elements, which trace their origins to a traditional Murano craft technique. Other fragrances in the collection include “Nuit Feline”, “Cuir Sensue” and “Pastel Oud”

About The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice is dedicated to the history of perfume and trade in Venice. Founded in 2013 by the Vidal family in collaboration with the municipal museums of Venice, the brand draws its inspiration from the historic trade routes along which rare spices and imports from the Orient once made their way to Europe. The connection to the lagoon city is also reflected in the design, which regularly incorporates elements of traditional Murano glass art.

Currently, “Safran Lumiere” is available exclusively at Selfridges in a 30-ml bottle.
