The Advantages of Taking a Break From Fragrances. Will you? or can you keep up with me on a journey?

Hi,

If you are reading this you probably have either thought about taking a break but never went through with it, tried taking a break but didn't last or like myself you have actually managed to take a full break and are interested in seeing if i had the same experience as you did.

When i took my first break after about 9 months of wearing a fragrance every day, often more than one, i decided to take a weeks break. At the time i made a poll on a few sites  asking if people had taken a break, had tried but failed or planned to in the future. The outcome was that almost half had taken a break, the other half never took a break, a small percentage planning on taking one and another small percentage had tried but failed after a day or so.

So, why should you take a break? One good reason is you can become nose blind very quickly the more you wear the same kind of fragrances for long periods. Using a verity of different kinds of fragrances can help with that but it's not as affective as taking a break. Just taking a few days of wearing no fragrance at all can have a huge impact. If you wish to read the topic i posted on the forum this is the link CLICK HERE otherwise i will give you a few good reasons i noted at the time during my break that i found interesting as a good reason for taking another break.

After 2 days i was feeling temptation to use a fragrance as i had some samples arrive and was struggling to not use them, i persevered and the next notable experience was when i went to look at a bottle, for what reason i don't remember but i realised that just opening the box was already a huge difference and whereas prior to the break to get the same experience as i did just opening the box, i would have previously had to put my nose directly in the box. So, by day 3 or 4 i was already seeing a difference in my ability to smell things with more intensity  and from a further distance. I noted that the experience of having not smelled any fragrances for those 4 days heightened  the  enjoyment from  just smelling the fragrance coming from the box  and that it was better than any recent wearing of a fragrance i had wore prior to the break i had started. So, i was  already enjoying fragrances more so by then, even if it was only once from a box. I also remember my food tasting better.  I remember being more aware of other natural scents around me that i was unable to smell after months of wearing fragrances every day. Candles, cigarette smoke, food being cooked, flowers and much more. I had a heightened ability to detect scents around me and i enjoyed them for what they were, natural and clean. Even the cigarette smoke was pleasant to an extent.

I don't have a note of the exact day which i had a new fragrance delivered. I believe it was either day 5 or 6 and  that was when i ended my break. I had received Eros Flame. I remember being able to experience fragrances for much longer than usual. They smelled so much better and i was aware of a wider range of different notes . Something i took note of was that one of my favourite fragrances which was The Most Wanted Parfum had returned to smelling like it did when i first bought it. I had lost the ability to smell the bourbon vanilla, my favourite note in that fragrance and instead i was smelling mostly ginger. Vanilla is the note i go blind to the easiest probably because it's one of my favourites, so i smell it often.  I had  actually stopped wearing The Most Wanted Parfum due to this inability to smell it as it should be. I had grown to dislike it but after the break and still until  the other day  when i wore it,  it smelled like i knew it should and it was great!

I have decided i am taking another break. You may ask why if i am able to smell my favourite notes. Well recently i have had a few new fragrances that are reviewed as being very strong and long lasting but at least 2 of them are just vanishing after 2-3 hours when i wear them and for a number of reasons i need to know if the fragrance is at fault or if it is a problem with me. I also wish to enjoy the nature and natural scents around me like i did the last time. Then there are reviews and statements i make. If i am giving out wrong information i don't feel comfortable with that and will have to correct them ASAP. There is also the knowing of when i finish my break, even if  it is the fragrances that do end up being at fault, i will still enjoy my fragrances more so than usual because i will be able to smell the different notes more clearly and it makes the wearing of fragrances fun again. When you wear the same things, even in rotation it starts to get a little boring and you end up going on a spending spree and i have bought way too many recently and only been happy with a few where as any new fragrance in the past was exciting to me, even if i didn't like it, the experience of smelling something new felt great! I am not getting that excitement at the levels i did before.

So i implore  anyone reading this, take a break, if even for only a few days. Enjoy the natural scents around you and look forward to the ability to enjoy your perfumes after the break is complete. Also i am challenging you to join me on the break. See just how long you can go for? Difficult but worth it, i promise you.

If you have taken a break, in the past or recently, please let me know if you experienced the same findings that i found. I hope to see you in the comments below 😉
