Invisible umbilical cord
I skipped Serge Lutens fragrances for a long time. At first sniff, they were always too opulent, heavy and dark for me.
I will never forget the day when a downpour broke out over the capital and I spontaneously found shelter in a large department store. Shaking the raindrops off my body, I suddenly found myself standing in front of the Serge Lutens counter.
"Féminité du bois": I love woody fragrances - but I usually find them unisex. The feminine and masculine parts of me often get their money's worth with woody fragrances. I was very interested in how feminine wood should smell. Two sprays on the scent strip and it was - as I find typical for Serge Lutens - opulent, heavy, dark. I put the fragrance strip in my bag.
In the evening, as I sat at my desk, a fragrance caught my nose. Although I can't really say fragrance. It was like a fine, incredibly attractive trail, a thread of scent. Not a melody but a sound. I followed this thread of scent to my bag. I brought the scent strip to my nose and got goose bumps all over my body. For a moment, the world stood still. What I was perceiving was not a scent but an intense feeling.
My fingers were googling all sorts of things about Serge Lutens. I wanted to find out as much as possible about the creator of such an unusual fragrance. I came across his biography, which touched me just as much.
He was separated from his mother just a few weeks after his birth. He rarely saw his mother. His personality was indelibly marked by this original abandonment. As he himself says, he was only able to survive because he lived his mother's life in his imagination. Serge Luten's entire creative process emerges from the eyes of a woman. Perhaps also because creativity is feminine.
For me, Féminité du bois is the scent of a mother. A little serious and stern, yet loving and warm, soft and protective. This scent definitely has bright parts and is characterized by enormous beauty.
After learning about Serge Luten's fate, I perceive this scent trail, this scent thread, as an invisible umbilical cord.
I thank the gods for the downpour. I would probably never have come across this masterpiece otherwise.
