How about ratings for sillage? 2

I was wondering how we all interpret the ratings for the sillage of a scent. I like some sillage and sometimes, when I look for ratings for scents that I'm interested in, those for their sillage are sometimes from 6 to 7 and I consider that to be quite week. But maybe that is a matter of interpretation...What do you think when the rating for sillage is in between 6 and 7? 'Moderate' I presume, but what does 'moderate' mean? One arm length or even less?

Really would love to know! Thanks in advance!

I think sillage is the hardest thing to rate because it's more about how others perceive the scent coming off of you. I usually rate it 8 or higher if I can smell one spray on my forearm or wrist without holding it up to my nose, 5-8 if I have to spray it on my neck or chest to actually smell it, and lower than 5 if I can't smell it at all on my chest and have to hold where I sprayed it up to my nose to even make it out. And these are within the first 30 minutes or so of spraying it, if it's strong but fades fast then I'll give it a high sillage and low longevity.

I generally think people are pretty generous with the sillage/longevity ratings on here, so I'd think a rating between 6 and 7 is pretty abysmal if I had to guess. But I think a lot of people conflate sillage and longevity too so sometimes fragrances with good sillage but poor longevity are rated badly in sillage as well.

Thank you for answering @Omnipotato! I was thinking the opposite, I often find ratings for sillage here rather low actually (that is when I know the scent and feel as though the sillage is stronger than rated).

I guess it is just a matter of finding out for ourselves Smile. But still interesting to know how others feel about the matter.

Sillage is a tricky thing; it depends on the climate and weather conditions. I live in a warm, low-humidity environment, so fragrances don't project as well as they do in colder or hot HUMID climates. Humidity makes fragrances more diffusive. When I rate sillage as a 6, it means moderate. A 7-8 indicates super strong sillage, while 9-10 is reserved for beast-mode fragrances with monstrous projection, such as Instant Crush, Tobacco Honey, Bijan Women, Followed, Guidance, etc. If a fragrance has strong sillage but isn't extraordinary, I would rate it 7-8 because those true "monsters" set the bar so high. That said, we all live in different climates, so...

Thanks for your answer @DRKSHDW ! Yes, climate matters. I always thought everyone would rate a low to moderate sillage as 7, but it seems some (like you) rate strong sillage as 7 as well. Just what I needed to know.
