Micallef Yellow Sea Yellow Sea - M. Micallef
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Oh, yes, Yellow Sea is a typical Micallef fragrance. It is mellow and opulent and yet has a certain conservative touch. The top note always reminds me of the slightly creamy taste of papaya, or even avocado! It is not sportive or dynamic, and I like to wear it in winter or fall. Being part of the "Sea" series, it comes in these special, hand-made flacons. At Micallef, they paint the ornaments by hand, and they also decorate it with those little Svarovski stones! Whenever the Micallefs come to a perfume fair, they usually show how this is done by preparing some of their bottles live. Besides their custom made perfume bottles, the Sea series flacons are probably the most elaborate they ever produced.Last year, I had the chance to talk with Mr. Nejman, Martine Micallefs husband, at the annual Düsseldorf perfume fair. He told me that the Sea series perfumes were going to be discontinued. Referring to the Art Collection, he said that Micallef had released a number of new perfumes, and they want to keep it a family run company. As they are becoming more successful, they decided not to grow but simply keep on with what they are doing. So, if new fragrances are released, I guess others will have to be discontinued. At the moment, you can still get the Sea series perfumes, i.e. at First in Fragrance, and the prices have dropped by about 50 %! This is an unmistakable sign for discontinuation. I strongly advise anybody to buy now!

Whose Oud is missing?
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Sherapop:Isn't oud a metaphor in perfumery--rather like amber?I'm serious. We talk about these notes as though they were monolithic, but really they are impressions created by the combination of many different components, are they not? 8)Hm, I think, in this case "oud" stands for the recent oud hype. Brands that release an oud perfume do not just sell a perfume that by chance incorporates a certain note, they sell a certain image. Personally, I do not need that 1001 Nights romanticism. Oud being just a note like anything else maybe can only be found at the Arab brands at the moment.

Parfumo/Fragrantica
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Sorry to read that, but we are still a very small community here. I think, we had a great start but now we simply need our time to grow, so there will be more people who will lead interestant discussions. I can only ask for patience. Is it the general impression, also of other users, that we are "colder" than other perfume communities? We try hard to create an atmosphere where everybody feels fine with being here, but if there is anything we can improve, please feel free to tell me or Don.Parfumo is not "run" by people who get money out of it. So, whatever is happening here relies totally on the engagements of its users.Lola82, please feel free to add more topics as DieNase has suggested. You're welcome!

Whose Oud is missing?
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...To be honest, I am disappointed by many of the recent Oud perfume issues by western brands. We have Montale and Micallef, and they have years of experience with that note, but I do not miss any quickly developed fragrances by other brands.I like Ouds that try to make the classic Arabian Rose/Oud combo more wearable, like Arabian Diamond by Micallef or Dark Rose by Czech & Speake, but things become strange when western perfumers want to show their creativity and artistry with Oud.I especially do not like the By Kilian Ouds or the attempts by Pierre Guillaume. I doubt that we will get any better Oud perfumes than those that we already have in the near future.

Read German Parfumo with Chrome Translate
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Thank you Jubliant! On Parfumo.de, it actually started with a few people writing longer and more detailled reviews, and then others simply followed their example. This is the whole secret about it. There are almost no one liners, everybody tries his best to describe the fragrances.I think what is special about Parfumo is that it is focussed on the user's reviews, and Don provided the appropriate frame for it: no annoying ads, a slender design, and most of all an appropriate typeset for the reviews. Under these circumstances, people are willing to make efforts.

What do you think about Yuzu Man by Caron? Yuzu Man - Caron
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Hm, I tested it and it was not too disappointing. You cannot expect anything else from Caron except something very conservative.Yuzu is extremely discreet, a fine summer scent for those who do not want a big load of refreshment but rather a slight citric aura.

Scents of Berlin
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...I wonder what people considered an elegant fragrance at that time. If you have a look at the traditional German perfume brands, i.e. Dralle, it seems that for the ladies anything flowery was widely popular. I do not think there was a widespread understandig of complexity in perfumery in 1920's Germany – apparently a difference to France. The fact, that chemists or perfumers made it possible to copy nature's scents must have still been fascinating to the people of the 1920's – including the somewhat decadent appeal of that idea.To catch that spirit of 1920's Berlin, you should look at soliflor fragrances! But why take a copy if you can have the original? Why not look at those traditional German perfumes that have survived the times?First of all, there is "Uralt Lavendel" by Lohse - a straightforward lavender water, but with a dark, mysterious touch. It was widely popular with our grandparents (my grandma also had it). And it is still available for small money.Of course, Kölnisch Wasser was popular – and still is. But is was there before and after that decade, so it may not be regarded as typical 1920ish.Perfume was made by small manufactures, and one of them is still producing perfumes: Harry Lehmann. Do not miss to pay them a visit when you come to Berlin! For details, look at The Parfumo Travel Guide. The small company was founded in 1926, and they still produce some of the old fragrances, i.e. "Maiglöckchen" (Muguet) or Fougère.

Le Mâle too chawy? Le Mâle (Eau de Toilette) - Jean Paul Gaultier
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...CyberToy1:I know a girl who uses Le Male and It smells great on her, but on some blokes It can be bad, and I mean bad. I think In summer months a chap need only apply very little, also a good Idea for him to have good personal hygiene skills. It seems to me that Le Male appears to be badly effected by heat and man sweat.Yes, the people who do not know that Le Mâle must be applied with discretion are the ones responsible for its bad reputation.

Webshops for atomizers & vials
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...The last time I needed sample atomisers I bought a rather big amount from www.rosa-heinz-de. They were almost half as expensive as elsewhere since Rosa Heinz usually sells to businesses, not to the end consumer. They do not have an up-to-date online shop and the purchasing process was a bit complicated. But all worked out fine and the small atomizers (about 50 Eurocent each) do not leak.http://www.rosa-heinz.de/s2/glasflaschen-06.phpI think they only ship to European countries

If you could have your own perfume/cologne ?
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Since I do not like just one fragrance style, this is a difficult question to me. I would rather not like to be reminded of a certain situation like a holiday for my own very special perfume. I would go for a perfume that underlines my presence. Something that does not tell stories about situations, landscapes, or even food.A very good skin scent could do this job, something musky (but not too soapy). Or something that refers to the clothes you wear. I think there is a lot of potential of that kind still in the classic fougère accord. Some of the newer releases of fougère in my opinion refer to the scent of garments, of dressing or bales of cloth. They could be ideal fragrances for men who wear sports jackets: "Abaci", "Sartorial", "Vétiver de Frédéric"

Comments on perfumes: compliments and insults
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Strangely enough, people hardly comment on the perfume I wear. I would have to wear something really strong, such as an Oud fragrance to get a few comments. Anyway, I don't mind. As long as nobody is complaining it's OK for me..

Krigler Chateau Krigler 12 - Krigler
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...Yes, I have tried a little. Krigler is sold in Germany by the Apropos stores. These are chain stores that try to sell anything "hip" and expensive. They have perfume departments where they mainly present those brands of the high priced sector that provide complete series of perfumes. So, it is brands like Montale, Bond No.9, Boadicea the Victorious and, since last year, also Krigler.I am always a little bit suspicious when somebody enters the market with a respectable serial of ten or more fragrances. I suppose creating perfumes takes its time and whatever has been developped in order to quickly present a new brand cannot all be first class.I tested their "Oud for Highness 75" which is in-between the Montale Rose/Oud style and the Micallef honeyed Oud style. Maybe I was a bit biased but for that crossover I'd still prefer "G. Nejman - Emir" by Micallef's side brand. I had doubts about the qualty of the oud they use. They definitely overdo it by advertising it as the scent of Hussein I. of Jordania. And I tested "Lieber Gustav 14" - which is very remarkable and unique. It is a lavender scent on a black tea background! I think there is no other scent with that combination, and if you like both, it is worth a try. I should take the time and translate my reviews.

So many great vetivers... Vétiver de Frédéric - Frédéric Haldimann
...Sherapop:I had a big bottle of Guerlain Vetiver (vintage), which I loved and so gave it to a friend in a rare gesture of perfumic magnanimity. I should like to report the recent discussions we had about the Guerlain Vetiver on the German Parfumo site.As you might know, Guerlain re-invented the "old" Vetiver bottle last year. When Guerlain reformulated its Vetiver so recklessly in 2000, they invented a stylish, ribbed glass bottle - quite nice in my point of view. However, the reformulation had been a shock for many Vetiver lovers. The terrific, dark green fragrance that it had been before was transferred into a pale, bright green that was not so special any longer. The bottle of the original was the same as Habit Rouge, only with a dark green instead of a red badge on it. Now we got back the same Habit Rouge bottle for Vetiver, but with a pale green badge and a silver cap instead of a golden one. When the change of the outer appearance was announced for 2011, rumors spread that Guerlain also went one step back towards the old fragrance. However, when it appeared they gave out the information to the perfume shops that only the presentation had changed, not the fragrance.Hm, some users at Parfumo got a different impression. Profumo did a comparison between the 2000 and the 2011 Vetiver, and he is sure that there is a change - somehow more tobacco in it. He likes it much better now. When I took a sample of my 2000's Vetiver to the Maison Guerlain shop in Berlin, I could not find any difference. Nevertheless, I trust Profumo and others. The Berlin Maison Guerlain was opened in summer last year, and Sylvaine Delacourte, Guerlain's art director, attended the event. Coriolon asked her whether there was a change or not, and she did not give a straight answer! She gave a very strange statement: she said that they had not planned or requested any change or reformulation but on the other hand she said it might have been possible that it had happened nevertheless! My theory is that they did a very slight change again but decided they wouldn't tell anybody about it since this time, they cannot blame it on IFRA regulations. Furthermore it looks like they filled some older batches of 2000's Vetiver into the new bottle along with the latest batches. So, at the moment, it seems it is totally unclear what you will get if you buy a bottle of Vetiver from Guerlain.Anyway, I do not use Guerlain's Vetiver a lot. The vintage you got before 2000 was so gorgeous, but that is gone. The 2000 is considerably missing character. At least, with "Vetiver Extreme", Guerlain released another great Vetiver that - although totally different - has the amount of character and uniqueness that the old one had. So, I am happy with Vetiver Extreme. There were flankers to the 2000 Vetivers. Recently I found a ressource where I still could order a bottle of the "Vetiver Frozen Fragrance / Eau Glacée" - it is pleasantly light and nice to wear. Between this and Vetiver Extreme, the 2000's Vetiver is neither fish nor fowl. The vintage Guerlain Vetiver cannot really be replaced, it is a deplorable loss. I would like to know - what is your replacement for the vintage Guerlain Vetiver?
