Buying High End Perfume on eBay Still Not a Good Idea

... I agree, Akira. You are not the first person I have heard talk about exorbitant shipping costs, either. Shipping costs definitely impact what one is able to purchase whether or not it newly made or vintage. There are retailers that I would buy from in the UK for example, but the cost to ship makes it impractical, and that is too bad. Still, there are many beautiful fragrances in our home countries, and that is a good thing. π

Buying High End Perfume on eBay Still Not a Good Idea

Parfumo Community
... We have all discussed the wisdom of buying high end perfumes on eBay, and I think most of us realise that there are a lot of very dishonest sellers out there, and any time we spend $$$$ on a perfume on eBay, we are taking a big risk. True, there are many honest, good sellers out there, too, but there are equally as many if not more bad ones. I recently came across one of the worst eBay sellers I have ever witnessed, and I wanted to share this rather bizarre story as a cautionary tale. This seller in Florida listed three high end vintage perfumes on eBay, one of which was a now discontinued Chanel extrait. Seller claimed the perfumes were a gift from a family member whose wife had passed. According to the listing, the perfume was to ship out of Florida via USPS. Buyer paid several hundred dollars for the perfume, and then red flags began to go up almost immediately. Instead of shipping from Florida via USPS, the perfume immediately shipped from NY via UPS. Immediately, the buyer questioned whose perfume was it, and why did it ship out of NY via UPS instead of shipping out of Florida via USPS as the listing indicated? Fair questions, no? Seller immediately became verbally abusive and claimed he owns 5 homes and was on vacation in NY. Seemed quite odd to the buyer that one would bring perfume along on vacation that was for sale in Florida. Then, there was the issue of shipping it UPS in their hot, brown vans half way across the country in the middle of triple digit temps. UPS then had some sort of problem, and the perfume ended up sitting on one of their ugly dark brown vans for a solid week in triple digit temps before it was finally delivered. A SOLID WEEK ABOARD A HOT, DARK BROWN VAN IN TRIPLE DIGIT TEMPS. Buyer was not happy and pointed out to seller that this was very, very bad for a perfume, especially a vintage perfume. In return, seller claimed that was a ridiculous thing to say and immediately began to accuse the buyer of being a "scammer" before the perfume was even delivered. Seller demanded buyer not open the perfume. Seller demanded buyer send it back once it was delivered. Now the buyer, a very experienced collector and a scrupulously honest person, was really upset. Once the package was finally delivered, it was actually warm from sitting on the truck, and shockingly, the package had no seller name and address on it. It had shipped out from some UPS kiosk apparently and just used the name of the UPS location. No seller name or address appeared anywhere on the package, which again seemed more than a little odd. Naturally, the buyer was upset and asked why there was no seller name and address on the package. Once again, seller became very verbally abusive and refused to tell buyer even his name much less anything else. Seller said, "eBay has my name." At this point, seller again threatened the buyer "do not open it. If you open it, you cannot return it." eBay told buyer that he had a right to open the perfume and determine if it was authentic and not spoilt. Buyer really wanted to keep the perfume since it was a discontinued favourite, but what if it was a fake or spoilt? The odds did not seem to be on the buyer's side. Buyer let the box sit unopened whilst he did some research. Buyer checked several websites, e.g. checkfresh.com, etc., but not one of the websites authenticated that the batch code was a Chanel batch code. Unable to even authenticate the batch code, buyer decided it was best to send it back, so with a heavy heart, buyer submitted the return request along with photos of the unopened box. Upon buyer's request to return, the very thing seller said he wanted, suddenly the seller became very friendly and encouraged buyer to keep it. Suddenly, seller advised buyer of his name, although it remains to be seen whether this was indeed the seller's name. Seller even sent buyer a photo allegedly of himself and some friends, although once again it remains to be seen who the people in the photo really were. Unconvinced and wary of losing several hundred dollars, buyer sent back the unopened perfume and took MANY photos of the bottle at the post office showing the box had not been opened. It was in the exact same condition as seller showed it in his auction. Days later, the seller received the perfume. A couple of days afterward, seller contacted eBay and claimed that buyer had somehow opened the box and used the perfume. eBay asked seller to substantiate his claim, but of course seller was unable to do so. Buyer was smart enough to document the condition of the perfume at the post office as it was being packed up and sent back in front of the postal clerk. There was no question the box had not been opened. eBay returned buyer's money. Now, seller was doubly angry. Seller then posted a false positive review alleging buyer was a "scammer" and that buyer had opened the box and somehow resealed it but had torn the top in the process, etc., etc. The entire story was a complete fabrication from beginning to end, and that in and of itself was scary because it indicated that the seller was delusional. Why even do such a thing unless seller hoped to keep the buyer's money despite getting the unopened bottle of perfume back? The upshot here is that the conventional wisdom of buying high end perfume on eBay still stands---it is a big risk that is probably not worth taking. If you do decide to risk it and buy high end perfumes on eBay and then discover you have been defrauded, it is best to research it all and fully document it before sending the perfume back to the seller. Why? Because as this rat bag seller proved, the criminals will keep trying to defraud you even after you send back the fake perfume. To be on the safe side and to have no regrets, buy from the maker or from a reputable grey market seller like Fragrancenet or from another collector you know and trust. Dealing with these petty criminals on eBay is not worth the stress, the time, and the fraudster's verbal abuse. Remember, caveat emptor my friends!!

... Glad you were able to salvage something from the site. Such a sad turn of events.... Well, I myself had not been very active on any sites now for quite some time. I did write quite a few perfume reviews on Make Up Alley, but life pulls us all away in different directions all of the time. As the Buddha taught, everything is always in flow. Nothing good, and nothing bad, lasts forever. It is only our desire to cling to things that causes us suffering, and so this is why we feel bad now about the end of this site. Maybe something else will come along in the not too distant future to replace it. In the meantime, we can all be thankful we still have parfumo. β€οΈ

... Yes, I agree with everyone. It is really sad. I just checked on the site, and it is still up at the moment, 1:25 p.m. central time for me. H2o, I have no idea how to do any of that, but good luck!

... This is a PSA. As I think most of us are aware, there are only a handful of sites that offer reviews and discussions of perfumes. So, I am sad to share the news that one of those few sites, Makeup Alley, just notified me that their site is shutting down for good on 27 September 25. π I will miss the site, and I am sure many of you will do, too. π If you have reviews or anything else on the site that you would like to salvage before it shuts down for good on September 27th, I suggest you do so soon.

High End Perfumes at Give-Away Prices!

... Here we go again. Zero feedback seller, chrifl17 on eBay. Located in California. Seller is offering very high end perfumes at bargain basement prices! She is practically giving them away. Price is still not low enough for you? No problem, she has a "make an offer" option on her listings. π I wonder how many people are going to fall for these fakes and then moan later that they were defrauded? π Caveat emptor!!

Selling Grey Market Perfumes for More Than Retail
Oriane
|
Perfumes & Brands
... I used to buy quite a lot of perfumes from Fragrancenet, but I slowed down a lot in the last few years. Am I the only one who has noticed that Fragrancenet is inflating the retail price before marketing it down? For example, Grand Soir, a popular amber-centric fragrance is being sold for a much higher price on Fragrancenet than it is FRESH at full retail price on Neiman Marcus's website. Everyone, more than ever, we need to really shop prices because so-called grey market sellers are not offering the great deals they claim to offer on perfumes that are already easily 3-4 years old. They expect you to pay as much or in many cases MORE than fresh perfumes at high end retailers. Outrageous..... π

eBay Buyer Made Poor Decision on Chanel No. 22
Oriane

Perfumes & Brands
... LouBe Hi Oriane, I just checked my bottles, and a few I really did spray were with bubbles in the straw. i guess this can happen. May be gravity + air getting into the nozzle can lead to bubble in the straw. That doesn't change this person being a scammer, but well, bubbles can happen in legit bottles too. Okay, I believe you, but I have never seen it happen. All of my bottles after being sprayed had the air in the straw from the factory completely pushed through.

... You know, it just occurred to me that that bottle of No. 22 might have been a factice. That may explain the bubbles in the straw yet a third of the liquid missing.

eBay Buyer Made Poor Decision on Chanel No. 22
Oriane
|
Perfumes & Brands
... A few days ago I saw an eBay listing by seller aiwi-53 (Jim Wilen?) for a huge bottle of Chanel No. 22 with no packaging listed with no reserve. Seller's photos revealed about 1/3 of the bottle gone. Looking at the bottle's straw, it was obvious the bottle had never been sprayed (unless something else really weird happened to it), so logically speaking, one would have to conclude that perfume evaporated. How long would it take a 200ml bottle to evaporate that much fragrance? It would have had to be stored in a very hot location and maybe in direct light. Anyway, neophyte(?) buyer alyfestylenotforsale bought it, and for reasons I am not clear, ended up paying the seller outside eBay. Apparently seller did not ship it? I am unclear as to exactly what happened, but buyer posted this listing with details. Let this be an object lesson to everyone. KNOW what you are buying. Do not pay outside of eBay if you do not know the seller from Adam. Even if you know the seller, paying outside of eBay means you have no protection in case of any problems. I can see buyer's reasoning in posting this listing, but buyer has not thought this through very well again. eBay is likely to suspend both seller and buyer for breaking eBay policy/rules. https://www.ebay.com/itm/29644. .. Buyer states in the warning listing: aiwi-53 Jim Wilen is a Scammer, the auction ended for the N22 EDT partial on the 18th & later the payment was finalized privately due to shipping complications. Please do not Bid on the Re-Listed Listing, for you own safety! Thank You, help protect the fragrance community.
