shrouded memories
this scent is the definition of "elusive" - you might spray yourself with this however many times you want, and yet it will remain barely-there, a ghost of a scent. usually this would piss me right off, but oddly enough, the beyond-poor performance works in this scent's favor. at its core this perfume is vaguely metallic in a soft way, it is nowhere near screechy or sharp. it is more reminiscent of a steam iron than anything else of the metal sort, though my first mental association with this scent upon smelling it was your (grand)father's shack where he keeps his fishing equipment. a rather niche image, but it's that very specific stuffy yet freshly ozonic, difficult to describe smell. you would have to experience it yourself to know what i'm talking about.

Parfumo completed!
You know you've completed Parfumo when you only buy fragrances that make you smell unperfumed.
Sure, you can also approach it differently, namely, some of you might already suspect it, by not wearing any perfume at all, but that's not the same. Dry alcoholics know what I mean.
Only a Mon Cherie can kill three hornets, and only an AldambreTM molecule can bring the wayward Parfumo back in full force. I swear.

Aldehydes that you will love too. Rose oxide, which has nothing to do with roses, and Habanjeros and Tonialyde, after which you want to lick all ten fingers, but can't, because the stuff is most likely quite toxic, but who cares, Mallorca is only once a year!

I also smell MediaMarkt, and I know MediaMarkt, don't ask, and I can fully understand the association; you only get prickly if you develop a fetish for the white-matte velvety Apple product packaging, BASF cassettes, and VARTA hearing aid battery blister packs.

Full score.

As interesting as it is banal. Ultræ smells exactly as described: dry cleaning, dry, hot, electronics packaging, dry again, electronics trade, or exactly as the ODOR Characteristics of the distributors of the central fragrance Aldambre™ represent: "Aldehydic, Dry, Woody, Clean, Warm, Hot Iron, Amber Undertone". Rarely have I encountered a perfume that I perceive so identically to its description. This is not particularly surprising here, as these linguistic descriptors of ingredients are something that the major companies in the fragrance industry weigh carefully, with sensory tests, questionnaires, and so on. Ultræ is one of the better releases from Aether, a company whose raison d'être rests on two developments: perfumes that refer to one or a few molecules, possibly originating with Helmut Lang's Velviona (2001), and the 'industrial' notes that made a splash with Comme des Garçons' Odeur 53 and 71 (1998/2000), and especially with the legendary Series 6: Synthetic (2004). Ultræ reads almost as if a few facets of Odeur 53 have been zoomed in on and intensified. As much as I love explicitly synthetic perfumes, something here feels off, a technical perfume, in a plain, 'valuable' glass bottle with a golden cap that could just as easily contain some random fancy water, and recently, an image campaign that reminds me of CK1 advertising from decades ago, just in 'hip'. It is certainly worth a test, the dry cleaning accord is realistic and impressive. Unfortunately, it is not a substitute for Comme des Garçons Dry Clean (2004), which was significantly more opulent and moist; those looking for a lighter, more playful yet also more complex interpretation of such notes should try Odeur 53 or 71.

Technofetish
Robbe, armed with two steam irons, over the scratchy polyethylene carpet of the local electronics store.

Cathode ray tubes fire their last electrons against a wall of plasma TVs - a heated power struggle of photons and electrostatic discharges.

Plastic packaging and circuit boards start to sweat, the waste heat forces them to their knees. A spectacle of thermoplastic deformation - techno melting point tantra in polycarbonate ecstasy.

The cold appliances hum at 50 Hz and run hot, while cascaded power strips (without DGUV test certification) feed an army of tumble dryers that whirl in ecstasy at full throttle.

Between the intoxicating scent of newness, overheated coils, and ozone-laden air from air conditioning, the warm, humid steam of a freshly opened dishwasher escapes - clinical, artificial, and outrageously clean. A capacitor dripping with verdigris discharges its condensed milk condensate uncontrollably.

A space beyond liminality - too bright, too loud, too commercial, too real. Ordinary and absurd at the same time. Outdated electronic junk next to futuristic tech gadgets, a showcase of dissonance.

At the center of this non-liminal space: glaring cold spotlight, confused looks meet me.

"What?" ... "Do you actually know Æther?" ... "They make great perfumes with particularly high-quality and natural ingredients ... everyone really likes them!"

MediaMarkt - I'm not stupid

HE IS IT
Oh my God, I finally found him. The scent that I thought I could never describe, where the need to be able to smell it is far too strong - preferably as a perfume, whenever I want. I have tested too many fragrances, all too scratchy, too fresh, too weak, too ordinary. But here he is. I am just a bit blown away because I have the perfection of a fragrance right in front of me. It smells like warm, soft laundry, without being gourmand or dark, it smells like skin, like water, like bed linen, like dryer warmth, like sun warmth, like fluffy fur, like light. It simply smells unique and 100% like me.

It is rare to find perfumes that layer perfectly with others. It transforms perception of space when applied on warm skin.

A quirky, successful scent. Dry cleaning, along with a hot iron, plastic wrap, and a hint of freshly washed laundry. Classy!

Hardware store, part 3, lighting section. Many hot light bulbs covered in electrical dust, many warm outlets, it's glaringly bright and dry.

Pure synthetic. Papery woodiness. Dull dust. Lasts on clothes for 4 weeks. Completely unfragranced. Gentle scent aura. iPad cover. Awesome.

This is how things smell. Here: Hot iron/metal, dry cleaning. Consistent scent futurism: technology, construction, anti-nature. Yes!

I don't get shirts cleaned anymore, I just use this. It pays for itself after 20 uses. Genius. Reminds me of normal times in the home office.

The dry cleaning is quite good, but the smell bothers me when picking up my suits and shirts.
