Serge Lutens is a renowned perfumer and artist who founded his own perfume brand, Parfums-Beauté Serge Lutens, in 2000. Born on March 14, 1942, during the war in Lille, northern France, Serge Lutens was separated from his mother in early childhood.
At the age of 14, Lutens, who actually wanted to become an actor, began working against his will in a beauty salon in his hometown and developed his distinctive style early on, which was characterized by striking makeup, flawless skin, and black clothing. At the age of 18, he moved to Paris and began his career in fashion and beauty.
In 1967, Lutens was commissioned by Christian Dior to create colors, styles, and images for the fashion house as he was preparing to launch his makeup line. During this time, he traveled extensively and drew inspiration from countries such as Morocco and Japan.
In the 1980s, Lutens began collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics group Shiseido, which helped the company gain international recognition. In 1982, Lutens created the fragrance Nombre Noir together with Jean-Yves Leroy. However, Lutens did not present his own signature until 1992, with the bottle design for Féminité du bois (Pierre Bourdon, Christopher Sheldrake) and the opening of a store in the Palais Royal in Paris.
In 2014, Serge Lutens founded the Serge Lutens Foundation in Marrakesh, Morocco, in a large house in the historic heart of the medina, which he had acquired in 1974 to use as a perfume shop. The museum-like premises of this foundation pay tribute to centuries-old Moroccan craftsmanship and serve as a refuge for Lutens' artistic legacy.
Waxes, cedarwood, and orange blossoms from Morocco provided Lutens with the inspiration for some of his early creations, including Ambre Sultan, Cuir mauresque, and Chergui.
