Winter Soldier
At 32 degrees Fahrenheit water turns into ice, and at the same temperature Serge Lutens’ - L’eau turns into an emotion. The citrusy, peppery flavor of this perfume tells the brain of summertime and spring, though the heart tells another story. A refined man puts this on during the holiday season.

Let me tell you a story - I walked out to fetch the mail on a cold December day. Jack Frost is here, but he is young - and still very joyful. The sound of packed snow crunches under my feet in a delicate, hearty way. The snow falling around me is as loud as an orchestra but simultaneously mute. As I return to the empty garage stall my senses are illuminated. I halt on the concrete floor and ponder, the snow on my boots quickly melting to the floor. A faint metallic glow resounds through my nose, a citrusy glint of summer. I’m seeing pieces and memories of summer scattered around the garage, yet I’m feeling winter.

L’Eau keeps her confidence confidential, though she isn’t afraid to be bold. This fragrance is like having the money to buy a new aggressive and all black BMW M5, but opting for the more mature white on white 550i. This fragrance is for the man who surely owns an extensive time piece collection, but has the confidence to wear none at all.

A flashback to protagonist's beautiful wife who dies before the start of the movie
The initial cloud is lipsticky, almost powdery. Not in a sweet way, just has the same weird kind of texture to it. Fluffy. Kind of like winter sheets.

Herbal more than it is floral. The kind of scent a flower seller would tell you "oh no, it doesn't smell at all" about, but once you go in for a sniff – yes, it does? It clearly does. Just not in an obvious rosy way.

It's a lazy morning in bed. Do you know the movie trope of a flashback to protagonist's dead wife smiling under white sheets? That are super brightly lit inside and out for some reason? Smells like those sheets. Clean. Fresh. Flannel.

I don't quite like the larger sillage cloud (a bit too heavy, projects about half an arm's-length wide, lipsticky), but close to the skin – it's gorgeous. A smell of clean aired out laundry without the usual twinge of synthetic fabric softener. Just fresh spring air and good soap.

Takes about ~40 minutes to settle close to the skin. Once there, it's very subdued, but never lacking. The kind of smell that, if I felt it on someone else, I probably wouldn't even think they're wearing perfume. Just that that person is clean and smells very good.

Faded away in less than ~3 hours. Left a soapy aftertaste in my mouth that, for some reason, I didn't really mind. An interesting little thing as far as "fresh laundry" perfumes go, but eh? I don't know. I just didn't feel particularly drawn to the experience.

Interesting summer green.
There are few offers from Lutens that I do not like. In the worst case, I can say that they just don't suit me personally. Unfortunately, this seems to be case with this latest Eau. I can recognize and feel respect for a beautiful and distinctive combination of notes here. The opening is superb, herby, fresh, green, minty, you can almost the sunshine capturing chloroplasts vibrating with energy. The magnolia offers it a nobility and grace that elevates it above the label "summer perfume." But the musk, I suspect, gives it an odd funk of wafers, but those Italian wafers, the Quadratini, that can fool one's nose a bit into detecting an iz of slightly sweaty socks or stockings lurking somewhere in the background. I've often experienced this problem with olive notes. For example, Fiore d'Ulivo (Xerjoff) and Un Jardin au Cythere (Hermes) do sometimes lead me in this territory, and sometimes the sensation is made worse by really hot and humid weather. Not a safe blind-buy in my humble opinion.

Cand e cald si transpir, chiar devine neplacut. Merita incercat inainte sa cumperi.

Water and metal
Lutens' eau's rarely serve as objects of admiration. They are either considered sub- or even anti-perfumes, strange and difficult to categorize. Freshies, aquatics, colognes? With Lutens? Strange...In any case, his L'Eau has an interesting central theme; I would describe this perfume as an ode to cold drinking water. From this point of view, the perfume is simply brilliant, it really has the ability to quench thirst (L'eau, that is). In addition to the wonderful drinking water effect, I notice a kind of soft metallic note. Strangely enough, this has the same cooling effect: metal is cool!

the perfume that is not a perfume
Serge Lutens wanted to create a perfume that did not smell like a perfume. It deliberately goes against the conventions of the perfume world, both in terms of structure and philosophy.

L'Eau Serge Lutens is a symbol of purity, freshness and clarity. But what actually makes it an "antiparfume"? There is no classic perfume structure with top, heart and base notes. Instead, Serge Lutens relies on a linear fragrance structure with notes of mint, clary sage, aldehydes and ozonic notes that are reminiscent of freshly ironed laundry or clean air.

In my opinion, Serge Lutens achieves exactly what he set out to do and creates a super clear, pure, fresh fragrance with L'Eau Serge Lutens that stands out from the crowd. You can actually wear it all the time, as it is much more focused on neutrality and lightness. L'Eau Serge Lutens is not a fragrance that wants to stand out, but one that creates space - space for itself!

Ozonic w/ a touch of clary sage. In the summer, aldehydes are pushed to the fore, with their metallic and soapy facets. Yet this is light.

Pleasing, discreet, slightly peppery light citrus. "Flat" noted below is a good word for it, thought not in a bad way.

Fresh white florals with mild sweetness & citruses. Extremely light in performance & very generic in feel, albeit the blend itself is fine.

Clear, transparent-clean with minimal spice and metallic notes in the background. Discreetly pleasing - is that positive or negative?
