A perfume by Alberta Ferretti for women, released in 1993. The scent is floral-fruity. The production was apparently discontinued.

sweet & strong fruity floral
Femina is a sweet & strong fruity floral that is better than the typical fragrance in this category.

Although I like the sandalwood dry-down, the scent is very BTDT. Femina doesn't seem to offer anything special other than price & longevity. If you like the category, definitely worth a sniff. Otherwise, you can safely pass this one by.

I have been tempted to purchase a bottle by excellent prices, and I'm glad I sampled first.

An olfactive "What if" in Ophelia's fate
Had the chance to find a miniature for a couple of euros at a flea market. So happy I did!
The perfume got well conserved too and the mini-bottle is simply gorgeous!

It opens green and floral, think Chanel's Bel Respiro. It soon evolves into a graceful, elegant herbacious acquatic scent, with slight hints of fruit.
Like an olfactive "what if": the smell of Ophelia if she changed her mind on drowning herself. She stays there, at the border of the water finding answers to her pain in her soul, connecting with the surrounding nature. Lovely.

Watermelon in Winter...
This scent has - despite the summery watermelon - something winter-fresh for me! Almost with a slightly metallic note! I perceive the watermelon very clearly, alongside the floral-cool notes.
I bought it (in a small pink bottle) soon after its release in 1993. Recently, I also added a specimen in this wonderful snail shell-shaped bottle.

I would like to dedicate this comment to a dear person from my past: a former colleague and friend, whom I helped move to Berlin in early 1994. Since I was wearing the newly acquired "Femina" at that time, I will always be reminded of her! We both worked in a university research lab in the early 90s, and she was wholeheartedly dedicated! Day and night she could be found in the lab, every weekend, she never took a vacation! Highly sensitive, ambitious, enthusiastic she was! For me, she was also a bit of a role model... But I often saw her in despair - over poor results and the moods of our supervisor! Only with great difficulty could she complete her degree. I myself literally "threw in the towel" after a year under the poor working conditions there and tried my luck at another university at the end of 1993 - successfully (see comment on "Que Viva").
But she persevered until the end, then went to Berlin, to her then great love - also a researcher. Unfortunately, I never saw her again after the move! From other sources, I learned that she soon left basic research to become a sailing instructor. Maybe that was indeed the better decision... I too said goodbye to research a few years later... and have never regretted it!
I hope she ultimately found her happiness!

Memories of Italy...
...come alive when I use Femina again: Summer 1993, vacation with my best friend in Cattolica, the sea (where we didn't go swimming even once), the sun (which we mostly slept through during the day and got sunburned), parties (oh yes, many parties!) and of course a summer romance (that's just part of it:-).

Shopping was a secondary concern back then, we had much better things to do. On the few daytime excursions we took, I discovered a small perfumery in a side street. In the display stood a beautiful bottle that I couldn't walk past, it fascinated me. At that time, I was already collecting fragrances, buying them simply because I liked the look, just like this one.

But aside from the beautiful packaging, the scent still blows me away today! For me, it's absolutely unique!

It starts fresh, but only slightly aquatic, rather green-fresh, which is probably due to the ivy leaves; the sweetness from the fruits lasts only briefly. Immediately, it becomes softer, a bit more robust, the violet leaves emerge, creating a velvety, enchanting powderiness. Various flowers come together, uniting into a whole - and yet, suddenly a jasmine flower appears, clear and distinct, then disappears again, replaced by a lovely mimosa. In this phase, it stays with me for up to 6 - 7 hours. The fruity notes remain completely in the background for me, and I'm glad about that.

For me, Femina is a very, very special fragrance, incomparable to anything I know. So completely different from today's sweet-floral and fruity fashion scents. I think it can be worn anytime; for me (especially because of the memory) it's a summer fragrance and somehow so typically Italian...:-)

Fruits, Fruits, and Fruits with Very Few Flowers
The fruits clearly play the leading role in this fragrance. Fruity perfumes in the mainstream sector, women's department, have mostly been sugar bombs since the 90s. But Alberta Ferretti's "Femina" does not belong to this floral-fruity-sweet legion. The fruits - the mix of bitter orange and mandarin is easily identifiable - do not come across as sugary or artificially sweetened here. They contain, in a sense, only the fruit's own natural sweetness. And this is additionally kept in check by a small aquatic kick (which is so subtle that even I, as someone who hates aquatic scents, can tolerate it).

Overall, "Femina" is a very mature version of a fruit scent: clearly a fruit fragrance, but not a sticky-sweet girly scent, rather one that is expressively fruity with restrained sweetness, and can also be worn well by established women - provided they can handle the high fruit content. The floral notes here only serve as a backdrop for the predominant fruit notes, and the base remains very discreetly in the background for a long time: musk, wood, and vetiver are hardly perceptible to me in the heart note; they also appear only subtly in the base.

In my opinion, "Femina" is not a groundbreaking achievement of perfumery, but a well-crafted fragrance with a balanced progression (the somewhat lackluster base fits perfectly with the fruit-forward top and heart notes).

It is stated above that Femina is still in production. I can remember that it was easily available until about the mid/late 90s; however, I haven't seen it anywhere for years now.

At first, there's delicious watermelon. Then, rich flowers come in.
As it develops, it becomes soapier with clean musk.
Reminds me of the 90s.

Not everything was better in the 90s. Some things were nice, like this floral scent, but it didn’t really stick with me.

Green-citrusy, slightly bitter, really refreshing and becomes more floral over time. Perfect for summer. Good.
Then comes an assault with soap.
