The Better Tobacco Vanille
At first, I smell tobacco leaf with dark vanilla. The fragrance pyramid emphasizes "Bourbon" in the base, and indeed this scent character is depicted very authentically here: it is not the well-known sweet gourmand note, but rather the somewhat dry, slightly bitter scent of a freshly cut vanilla pod. The dominant tobacco occasionally reveals a slightly leafy note that personally reminds me here and there of vetiver. I also imagine catching a slight rum note, especially at the beginning. However, the fragrance does not come across as alcoholic or green at all. I do not perceive a clear separation into top, heart, and base notes. However, as it develops, a subtle ashy note is added in the background, which never feels dominant and adds a little more tension to the fragrance. Overall, quite a lot happens on my skin at the beginning, but after that, the performance fades rather linearly.
The individual scent notes feel authentic and very well balanced to me. However, this makes the fragrance seem somewhat less rugged overall than I would prefer. It goes without saying that it draws clear parallels to Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, but with its darker, drier vanilla, it feels significantly more mysterious, darker, and even a bit sexy for my taste. As much as I like Tobacco Vanille, it often evokes involuntary grandpa associations in me. Oud Tabac completely avoids that, and for the better. The ashy note reminds me of Tom Ford's Tobacco Oud. However, it remains more in the background - as a smoker, one is not misrecognized here. Nevertheless, I would have liked it to be a bit more present. In the dry down, Oud Tabac approaches Gucci Intense Oud a bit. However, it remains quite independent, as far as that is possible in this genre. It has no animalic qualities of oud at all. Overall, I actually miss oud here completely, which unfortunately applies to many fragrances with agarwood in the name.
The sprayer could easily be from Creed. That means: it releases a good amount of juice! The sillage is quite substantial for about an hour. After that, the fragrance noticeably retreats but remains well perceivable in the immediate vicinity. Even after 8 hours, I can still catch a whiff of it while moving. I have moved away from sillage bombs because they often are not very wearable. For me personally, Oud Tabac strikes the ideal balance - you can smell it for a long time in my vicinity, but without a cloud of fragrance like a hammer. Nevertheless, it is somewhat weaker than the obvious competition.
Overall, a truly high-quality, noble, mystically seductive companion with good wearability and durability at a discreet sillage. For me, it is the better Tobacco Vanille with a hint of Tobacco Oud, which could have been a bit more prominent. In the meantime, you can occasionally find it at discounters for under €100 - for that, it is absolutely excellent and worth every recommendation! I would not pay the original price, and the same goes for the Fords.
