A gentle floral for the teenage grandma in your life
Somewhere at the impossible crossroads of "grandma perfume" and "teen girl 00s body spray" lies this interesting fragrance from Anna Sui, a house known most for bottles that themselves showcase much more creativity than the fluid they hold within. Despite this reputation, I can't say I've ever smelled a perfume quite like Sui Love. But... I have smelled a LOT of perfumes that are KINDA like Sui Love.
That is to say, this fragrance relies on many cliched notes that give it a classic, powdery floral scent you've probably encountered many times. Yet that passionfruit gives it an unexpected fresh juiciness, and the nutmeg in the base brings a warm and lightly-spicy balance to the whole thing. On first spray it came off really strong and synthetic, but only a few minutes needed to pass for me to get the various white florals which were really brightened up by the fruity element.
It's a uniquely youthful interpretation of the tried and true department store rose-jasmine-tuberose formula that seems pretty ubiquitous by now. In my case, it's not quite creative enough to justify itself, but it can't be denied that the bottle is beautiful and feels plucked right out of my 2000s nostalgia dreams. Wouldn't mind seeing this one come back with a reformulation that gives the bottle something a bit more unique to hold.
