Wet cigarrete
Imagine this. You had some sips of cheap Rum while smoking on your balcony. It was raining, you had to leave your place in a hurry and forgot your coup with Rum and half-smoked cigar on your balcony during the weekend. Then it's Monday, and you pick it up for cleaning. What is inside the coup looks like a terrible liquid with rain water, Rum, and wet cigar. That's what it smells like.

"Tobacco note" could easily be replaced by the description above. It's a very unfortunate experience. But this is the life of the adventure in the world of fragrances. You try, you discover, you find what you like, and you find what will never make into your collection.

The experience was so sickening that I almost gave up trying the other samples from this house.

Typical Brooklyn Soap honest clear scent
I treated myself to the fragrance set from Brooklyn Soap and am now testing one scent after another in order to possibly decide on one or more scents later. The name is clearly "scent" and comes across to me as straightforward and simple. It has a clear tobacco scent with light woody notes and lasts about six to eight hours on me. For me, it might be a bit too simple as a signature scent.

The Almost Transparent Smoke
I am surprised by myself - normally I am skeptical about smoke / oud / resin or similar fragrance directions. However, this scent was pleasant and not heavy for me at all.

I have a very specific association with the smell: my father is soldering, and like an old-school Soviet engineer, he dabs the soldering tip into a piece of colophony that resembles amber. The air smells subtly of something woody-resinous smoke.

That’s how I perceive this fragrance - like a subtle, almost transparent smoke that has something of bright resin. I can’t detect any rum or alcohol, no tar, no spices, and no rose either. I must admit, I have never smelled tobacco leaves in my life, so I cannot judge that aspect. But in any case, the scent is quite fresh, or at least much airier than what one would expect from the pyramid.

Good Tobacco Scent, Reveals Many Aspects, Then Settles on Sweet-Elegant
Ouuuuh what a beautiful start, it immediately reminds me of some lovely evenings in my favorite bar around the corner, just recently voted one of the 10 most important bars in the German-speaking world of the last 20 years in the most important industry magazine... One of the most authentic rum notes in the first minutes, along with very exciting, roasted cardamom, which already leans towards smoldering tobacco leaves, slightly rough, dry saffron behind it and a few fine splashes of mandarin (which do their part to remind of great Rum Old Fashioneds, as there’s also a splash with an orange zest and then it goes into the drink).

This cardamom then smoothly transitions into the "real" tobacco in the heart, after 10 minutes the dry tobacco is already the absolute king on stage, the clove, the tar, all of this rather emphasizes its individual aspects, making it sometimes long-dried, sometimes still slightly smoldering, sometimes cool, sometimes still relatively sweet-creamy (here again the rose plays its part), which I really like and builds a nice complexity around this one main note.

Overall, however, after 45-60 minutes, the delicate, sweeter tobacco variant noticeably takes over, also because sandalwood, amber, and tonka are already exerting their influence. So it actually remains like this until it fades away.

One of the better executed, very monothematic scents purely from the composition, unfortunately, as is typical for Brooklyn, it tends to be in the lower third of EdP regarding H/S. Nevertheless, I really like the blend itself, in the sale it would definitely be something for days when you want to spread tobacco in a calm, pleasant way.

Not bad. Starts slightly fuzzy, quickly becomes spicy, with a hint of sweetness, resinous and woody, with a light tobacco note.

Softened tobacco; citrusy, soaked in rum. Feels a bit unbalanced, could have been more as it's basically a solid scent.

Aromatic, slightly sweet pipe tobacco. Spiced with oriental notes, with a hint of rum + balsamic. Hardly any rose. In the dry down, warm ambered wood.

Good tobacco also needs rum,
to cool the dry palate.
The spices do a great job here too.

At first just rum,
quietly fading into smoke,
the dry tobacco reveals itself...warm, spicy & slightly sweet
tar and clove resonate.

Sweet spiced tobacco, dry, brown. Hint of clove. Alcohol is poured. Cuban plantation with hospitality. Earthy ash.

Cigar box with vetiver-like spice. Sweet creaminess. H+S is subtle. Softly fruity, very approachable. I claim: not mainstream.
