artful anxiety
I've found interpretations of hinoki varies from perfumer to perfumer, ranging from lemony and coniferous, to tarry and peppery. This version is a deeply unpleasant boyscout campfire burning with bandaids and liniment and makes me feel the way I do when I'm dreaming and I walk into a darkened room and flip a light switch for illumination...and then nothing happens. At that point, the dream invariably descends into a nightmare, but I have learned to wake myself up at that moment, my brain boiling, electrified and panic-stricken. As a writer, at times I crave this scent when I need a freaky, feverish jolt of agitation. It's also great for layering to add a touch of artful anxiety to a scent that's pretty, but perhaps placid.

Sumi becomes one with the trees
Sumi packed the stick ink and the rubbing stone again. The cedar didn't want to be in the picture, so he decided to let it go for today. Sumi had respect for nature, was of stately stature himself and had always been a great camphor. Wherever he appeared, peace returned, his charisma was so bitter and yet he only wanted to become one with nature, with the Hinoki and the cypresses, the cedars, through his ink paintings. I am based on water, Sumi thought, just like the trees and the river of my brush when the ink on the stone is rubbed with it.
Then he bowed to the Far Eastern conifers. He smelled the smoky lampblack of his ink, which was still in the bar at his feet. Now also the Hinoki and the cypress bowed as if they wanted to pay their respects to Sumi. And so they became one. Sumi's supposed bitterness slept softly in the soft warm soot, the Hinoki was also united with the smoke, smelled like Palo Santo instead of citrus, the cypress hummed to spicy resins also soft overtones, as if it took Sumi's bitter hand in its needle green.
Now they were round like a yin and yang, the camphor, the soot and the holy woods, they whispered for a few hours, then the painter moved on.
**
"Sumi Hinoki" is for me a Far Eastern ink painting with nature motif. It combines the soft sooty smell of the stick ink (Sumi) with steamed, slightly smoky, resinous-balsamic woods and the bitter-green note of a cool morning.

My discovery when last visited Paris. So intriguing and different. Mistic smoke.
