Leather Shoes
It's sad to see that Canali discontinued their whole fragrance line. It had some pretty good offerings. Canali Style was also a good release. Extremely cheap, but delivered more than expected.
Strongly synthetic, but Style got some kind of crude charm. A pinch of citruses, and then strong kick of leather on the background of pale smoke and a lots of Iso E Super. This leather really reminded me of brand new Italian shoes. The drydown is sweeter, cheap and quite boring.
Style is completely formal, and somehow Ellena-esque. This transparent woodiness is very similar to Ellena's Terre d'Hermes. An Italian take on Hermes' novel perfumery.

Canali Style
I like most of the other Canali colognes for men but this one was not for me. It reminded me of something very outdated that my dad might have worn in 1979. Very masculine and overt which is something I steer clear of in men's fragrances. Too "old school" smelling for my liking. I ended up giving my bottle of this away.

Pleasant leather
Leathery, light zesty-soury, very mature and sophisticated. I bought it, when i had no knoledge of fragrances(i am still not advanced, but not beginner also). Found it in local drogerie, last bottle for 8 EUR 50ml full presentation. I was impressed by the quality of the bottle, love it a lot.
Lasts 6 hours max, not strong projection.
Lately i realised the retail price and was shocked, 40+ EUR. Not worth at all.
Nowadays I already tested over maybe 200 different scents, but nothing is like this one to me, very genuine.

Grating Liquorice
The origin of the saying "grating liquorice" (in the sense of flattering) is somewhat disputed. However, it certainly relates to the pleasant taste of liquorice, from which liquorice powder was made early on. So, someone who grated liquorice (the grating of the liquorice was meant to rub small pieces off the root to then make them enjoyable as powder in honey or wine) offered the other something sweet and spicy, a special luxury in earlier centuries, and endeared themselves to them.

Liquorice in fragrances is rather rare, especially in masculine scents; only 20 less common men's fragrances are listed here on Parfumo. The scent is described as both intense and subtle, and in its unprocessed consistency, it also somewhat resembles anise. A particularly unique pleasure is the enjoyment of dried liquorice root, which has not been boiled into liquorice, whose juice can be chewed. Anyone who has tried this can better imagine the scent of the substance than those who only know the processed sweet version.

Luca Turin highly praises this extraordinarily inexpensive fragrance as a simpler, yet darker and stronger ("...replaced by a somber monochrome hum...") albeit less refined variant of Timbuktu (he also mentions Déclaration as another, albeit weak reference). In fact, I would not have easily made this comparison myself. However, in testing the two fragrances, remarkable parallels quickly emerge, even though the fragrance pyramids show hardly recognizable similarities.

Both fragrances (Timbuktu and Canali Style) are characterized by the contrast of smoky and sour notes. I would swear that there is also a good shot of vetiver in Canali Style - similar to Timbuktu - but I am not sure if this note is not caused by the aforementioned liquorice. The anise note is recognizable, a certain sweetness as well, but the faint sour undertone could also stem from the vetiver that is simply not mentioned in Canali Style.

The woody base note, which is very pronounced in Canali Style, is likely derived more from cedar than from sandalwood; one might also think of a leather note, as the scent fluctuates between soft and pronounced.

While Timbuktu is more refined, has more depth, appears brighter at the same time, and emphasizes the contrasts more strongly, Canali Style is somewhat clearer, simpler, darker, and more robust, remaining more on the surface, but is therefore not significantly less appealing. In fact, while I would always prefer Timbuktu over Canali Style if asked for the more beautiful scent, I must admit that the latter is characterized by a pronounced everyday usability. While I occasionally feel, following a (perhaps absurd) impulse, that L’Artisan Timbuktu is too precious for the office and then ultimately do not choose the scent at the last moment, I can easily imagine Canali Style as a reliable all-rounder in everyday situations, which I still have to test (from breakfast to the office, from the office to a business trip, from the business trip home, from the home’s four walls to a restaurant visit, and perhaps even with subsequent liquorice grating with the beloved). Only the longevity seems rather average to me. Reapplication before the liquorice grating is therefore necessary.

All this sounds a bit as if the scent is pleasing, yet also somewhat smooth and arbitrary. However, strangely enough, this is not the case. This combination of smoke, wood, a bit of leather, and a subtle acidity is original. Although not as originally implemented as in Timbuktu, it is certainly more exciting than what a large part of the mainstream market has to offer - and at a price that is almost unmatched.

If one is in the privileged position to set cost considerations aside, the final question arises as to whom this fragrance, especially in contrast to Timbuktu, might suit: perhaps Timbuktu is more the scent of a man with subtly eccentric or dandy traits, while Canali Style is that of the elegant but less conspicuous gentleman.

The Pet Store

Canali Style is the fresher, more stylish representative in the portfolio. After testing Canali Men, I initially had no great expectations here. But I was surprisingly taken aback by a very unusual scent.

It is by no means as generic as Canali Men. While there are some elements from the standard repertoire - for example, a bit of citrus in the top notes, then ethereal freshness - the result is quite different. Upon spraying, a very strange thought comes to me - this smells like a pet store! There is a very specific scent that is also present here. And I believe it comes from some kind of bedding that is thrown into the cages of hamsters and rabbits. A very peculiar, unmistakable smell. Personally, I find it pleasant, but opinions may vary. It's a shame, as something could have been made of this, but now the hour of ethereal freshness strikes. I believe it does not consist of Calone (at most minimal traces), but rather something akin to mint or eucalyptus. However, it is probably neither, as it cannot be clearly identified. This note initially overwhelms everything else.

Eventually, the pet store makes its presence known again and enters into an interesting synthesis with the ethereal, somewhat aquatic note. The ethereal note surprisingly lingers for a long time and remains truly defining. I think one reason I like this is that there is a subtle similarity to my favorite scent among fresh aquatics, namely Quasar by Jesus del Pozo.

I would now expect the ethereal note to fade into a generally woody base. This is not the case; it persists until the end, which, however, announces itself after just two hours - so be it!

My opinion: Not a must-have, but worth a test!

The originally mentioned sweet licorice is strangely no longer noted; spicy leathery, artificial.

Peppery woody start with coffee in the background. Then a black leather bag opens up. Fits the style of the Italian luxury brand.

Harmoniously combined men's fragrance (for me, better than the hyped A.): spicy, (sweet) woody, subtly leathery-smoky, distinctive. Beautiful!
