Perfect summer masculine!
Caron is criminally underrated. A classic french house, pretty much a true Niche brand (not available everywhere, pretty original and with perfumes as the main business).

Pour un homme is one of the pillars of Lavender masculines. A gorgeous and very natural lavender with vanilin and some musks in the base. Simple but memorable.

This Sport edition is a more fresh and green version of the original, without vanilla but, instead, with some Ambergris in the base. It starts like the original, with a burst of Lavender, very powdery, masculine and upscaled or, at least, gentleman-like.

What differs completely from the original is the mid and drydown. The star here is the Lemon verbena. A grassy, green, lemony scent that is reminiscent of tea (and is great for infusions). The fragrance turns fresher and slightly citrusy and green due to this ingredient. There's also some cedar to make it more rounded and masculine and the drydown reveals ambergris. A salty and slightly sweet ingredient.

Overall a fresh, salty, green and a bit sweet fragrance, excellent for summer and spring days with decent longevity and good projection in the first hour or so.

An underrated gem that needs more attention and is highly recommended by me as a great and unique fragrance for this upcoming summer.

Open Letter to Ernest Daltroff Regarding the Reinterpretation of One of His Significant Classics
Dear Uncle Ernest,

When you founded the Caron brand, you must have envisioned nothing less than the reinterpretation of fragrance itself. It is hard to explain otherwise that during your lifetime (until 1941), some of the most significant women's perfumes were created, perhaps even the first true men's fragrance (Pour un Homme), along with some truly extraordinary scents with daring themes. There were black flowers (Narcisse noir), one of the first tobacco fragrances (Tabac Blond), a Christmas scent (Nuit de Noel) when no one was thinking of such things, En Avion, the first fragrance of the young aviation history, stone flowers (Fleurs de rocaille) - and even after your unfortunate death, milestones like Royal Bain de Champagne, Yatagan (a fragrance that plays a special role for me, but I'll tell you about that another time), Le 3e Homme, and L'Anarchiste. You would surely have been proud of all these descendants.

I never intended to disturb your peace; not even when your heirs developed the first postmodern perfumes and designed a yuzu fragrance for men. After all, it was quite well done and almost ahead of its time.

But then, dear Ernest, the fun started to fade more and more. They launched a Pour Un Homme offshoot (Impact pour un Homme) under your name (Caron), which noticeably varied the theme and was obviously intended to appeal to a younger audience. After the initial smoky annoyance, it seemed to me that it must be more about myself: One slowly becomes an old grump. Why shouldn't there be a more modern version of the somewhat dusty monolith? So far, so good.

I initially thought similarly when I read that they had developed a sport variant of your olfactory monument. Caron pour un Homme Sport. After all, the idea of brightening the vanilla-laden drydown and lightening the lavender flag of the beginning with yellow-orange stripes (citrus, mandarin) isn’t so bad.

However, what ultimately came of it brings tears to my eyes. Not that the fragrance is completely unsuccessful. If you don't compare it to its granduncle (it would be inappropriate to speak of a grandfather due to the significantly altered DNA), you can still find some merit in it, even if after an acceptable start, the base smells like dozens of other men's fragrances that are launched on the market year after year.

But if you do what one should avoid at all costs, namely compare this green-silver lacquered tuning model with the chrome-shiny classic from 1934, then from my perspective, there is only one thing left, dear Ernest Daltroff: Look at what has become of your legacy and intervene. A small curse over this new offshoot would be enough for me.

Not that you would have to condemn your entire brand wholesale. On the contrary. The majority of Caron fragrances are as good as ever. All the more questionable is what they intended to achieve with this reinterpretation. Rejuvenation, attention, a little scandal? Whatever it is, but enough is enough; this goes too far.

The strongly dominating mandarin hides behind a cool-herbaceous verbena veil from the mass production of postmodern perfumery. A slightly sweeter base ultimately makes the fragrance bearable again, but at the same time destroys the bold citrus-mandarin fanfare of the beginning. Not entirely bad, but fundamentally comparable to the recent disasters of L'Homme Ideal and Chanel Bleu.

Dear Ernest! Do something!

Warm regards

Yours,
Yatagan

Moistens the Classic Stamp
Sport - just like Oud or Intense or Extreme or soon surely Cologne: as a frequent tester, one can hardly bear to see it anymore. And when you see this addition to such unsporty classics like Encre Noir or Caron Pour Un Homme, the scented tie rolls up. But since Lalique has performed excellently with its sporty black ink (but actually hasn't changed much), I took the opportunity in Paris to at least test the new Caron. Lavender, vanilla, a century-old classic that is spotted more often in France's capital than one might think - and sport? How does that fit together? Can this work? Is it necessary? Are Opium Sport & Yatagan Sport next?

In short: spontaneous direct purchase! It is so incredibly well done, for me one of the 3 best new releases of the year! An absolute long-term test aside. But it excites me, I have rarely felt so good after showering. And ice-cold vervain meets sweet dream-inducing lavender - what more could you want? A combo that fits! One can only rave & dream fittingly with the lavender - I never expected that. Mandarin meets lavender, vanilla has been completely banished, which was clear. It now reminds me of a unique blend of the original & L'eau D'Issey. I didn't even know that lavender survives ground frost, so icy is the scent, it has such a citrus zing. It hisses & pricks & tingles. Surely also a candidate that can perform wonders when stored ice-cold in summer. Zesty & full of energy - and then the grounding, calming lavender as a contrast & backbone. Yes, it works. Sport is still alive. Caron achieves a great success & a worthy flanker to the original, against all odds. And most importantly: I don't know any other scent that smells like this, especially not with the addition of Sport!

Bottle: somehow 80s & only subtly modernized. Frosty!
Sillage: skillfully diffusing due to the lavender, especially in sports.
Longevity: slight weakness - it is gone for me after 5 hours.

Conclusion: lavender is so cool - my power combo for the (hopefully) sporty remainder of 2015!

Like cool-creamy dew on my skin
Fresh scents are always a bit tricky. They are often either too fresh in the form of a shower gel or their longevity is abysmal, requiring what feels like hundreds of reapplications. As you can see, not exactly a fragrance dream.

However, after reading Leimbacher's comment on this scent, I became very curious. Icy lavender, that must be wonderful, I thought to myself. And it was, as soon as I sprayed it on, I was captivated.

Fresh, juicy fruits meet icy lavender, which always makes me picture a clearing covered with cool, slightly icy dew and gently warming sun rays. A wonderful olfactory experience! But it gets even better. After the cool freshness settles, something slightly creamy comes into play, I think this is thanks to the musk and amber, reminding me of a lightly sweet vanilla. This combination is truly enchanting!

I can hardly get enough of this scent; my sample was empty faster than any other before, and right after that, the bottle joined my collection. I also love wearing it during the cold season; I find that the slightly creamy finish fits perfectly, and I always feel fresh :)

I am also very satisfied with the longevity and sillage. It lasts on me for 6+ hours, and I can smell it wonderfully the whole time. For those around me, it is very pleasantly noticeable but not too overpowering.
Top scent and absolutely worth a try for anyone who enjoys lavender fragrances.

Lightly Sweaty-Sour-Metallic Infusion Without Spirit
I unfortunately have to almost directly counter Leimbacher's comment here, but the feelings of happiness that "Caron Sport" brings him are almost completely absent for me.

First of all: This modern infusion has almost nothing in common with the great, brilliant, classic "Pour un homme".

The scent starts in a rather fresh area, but it's quite sour, dull, somehow metallic-cool and wiry (probably the verbena) and slightly minty.
Is it once again the combination of citrus and nutmeg? The overall style resembles a lightly sweaty T-shirt in its dull, not really refreshing sourness.

Lavender does not appear at all for me, which alone actually prohibits any reference to the 1934 oldie.

It remains shallow, getting lost between sourness, metallic style, and clumsy musk; sillage and longevity are poor. That was a miss, Caron!

The original made fresher as well as updated. With a real ambergris tincture for longevity.

Beautiful and refreshing. Sadly discontinued. I enjoy this more than the original, which it strays from significantly (upsetting some users)

Lavender gets overshadowed by verbena and ginger on the course. But the refreshing mint makes up for it.
Fresh as it should be! *

Compared to his father, he's a shy 21-year-old, fresh and light, starting a summer day by the pool. Good-looking boy.

Fresh herbal start...
Lavender and ginger beautifully blended.
Sport or not. Totally irrelevant.
I think the scent is well crafted.

Similar to my relationship with sports: a great idea in theory, but the execution is lacking. And after a short time, the excitement fades.

Clearly fresher and slightly toned-down original DNA. For me, it’s even more wearable. A successful flanker that honors its origin!

Why don't the manufacturers ever release the opposite? Like a Couch Potato or Armchair Flatulence Edition. Or Lazy Sporty... ;)

I've rarely smelled such a fresh/spicy scent! Pure refreshment on the skin, and after a while, it even becomes slightly creamy. Dreamy!
