The Most Bohemian of All Gemstones
Next to Moldavite, an olive-green gemstone with golden and copper-red glimmers, the garnet, this blood-red gemstone of our grandmothers that strikingly resembles the seeds of the pomegranate, is the most Bohemian of all gemstones. In the 19th century, this very popular gemstone came from Bohemia, but today garnets mostly come from the USA, Sri Lanka, and South Africa.
Essentially, garnets are still gemstones for the older generation; the youth do not feel particularly drawn to them. This is a pity, as a perfectly cut garnet develops an incredible fire with its blood-red color.
Ramón Béjar has packed two of these gemstones and three diamonds into the bottle and named the fragrance Garnet. Its description speaks of a fruity-floral, sweet, passionate scent.
Accordingly, I expected a warm, cuddly composition and looked at the pyramid before testing. What one might expect from a fragrance description...
But here too, I was taught otherwise. Garnet starts off green and fresh, with the dark green spiciness of fig leaf, but only for a very short time.
Then it becomes intensely floral, and I fear that the tuberose is overpowering the other components. Garnet strongly reminds me of Roma; I found Insolence to be similarly piercing as an Eau de Parfum. It is this loud, somewhat penetrating scent accord that makes Garnet unappealing to me.
Undoubtedly, the fragrance is well made, as it plays with the scent building blocks, even though the tuberose clearly maintains the upper hand.
The base notes form a beautiful background but hardly come into play themselves. However, for those who enjoy such fragrances, Garnet could be a revelation.
For the others - including myself - it holds true: if it is too strong, you are too weak!
