Tropical Floral

With four florals, three tropical fruits, two citrus, and gourmand notes in the base, Ambush is pleasant. I've read that it has sandalwood, but I don't smell it. I do smell pralines in the base and other notes sufficient for grounding. I find the name odd because I associate woods and animalic notes and resins with the concept of ambush by fragrance. Don't get me wrong, this fruity floral can seduce, but it doesn't lay in wait. The florals don't cloy, the fruits aren't too sweet. It's a straightfoward beauty, down to earth and appealing. If it ambushes, it does so with open arms.

Ambush against Ambush

After managing to purchase two 15ml bottles of this current, reformulated Ambush for really little money, I naturally got right to testing it today upon arrival.

Ambush 1997 presents a very fruity top note that lasts for almost an hour before the floral notes begin to emerge. Papaya and kiwi could be on point; the scent goes in that direction and is correspondingly sweet. At the same time, an unpleasant animalistic note mixes in, which I usually only know from musk, although nothing of the sort is listed in the pyramid. The latter even lingers longer than the fruits.

I actually prefer the bitter-herb top note of Ambush 1955.

Thus, in direct comparison with Ambush 1955, the top note is already extremely different. The two fragrances have nothing in common here except for the name.

Even as the vintage Ambush unfolds its full beauty and grace, I still cannot find much to appreciate in the newer version. Despite the flowers, which are not individually identifiable, a slightly fruity and still animalistic note remains, and the scent becomes somewhat "watery" in perception but is still not weaker.

In the newer version, I also cannot really discern a base. A slightly chocolatey accord becomes perceptible, but otherwise, the scent does not change significantly.

Personally, I much prefer the vintage version, with its incredible feminine elegance, the feeling of luxury and glamour.

However, the reformulated version aligns more with our current zeitgeist, and I understand the company's endeavor, although I see the target audience as more likely to be those under 30.

I would gladly offer one of the two 15ml bottles to anyone among you who genuinely wants to wear it.
