Caramel, Anise and Celery Seed?....
Fusion Sacre Lui opens with a just noticeable dulled orange note before it quickly transitions to its early heart. The barely detectable dulled orange remains, now joining slightly boozy rum and ground black coffee, all supporting a dominant anise and slightly sweet brown sugary caramel accord. As the fragrance makes its way through the heart accord the anise-laced caramel displays a slightly salty aspect derived from significant use of celery seed rising from the base that hangs around throughout. As the highly linear progression leads to the late dry-down, the rum and coffee grounds disappear and the celery seed recedes, leaving the anise-laced caramel sans its formerly salty undertone to dominate through the finish. Projection is excellent and longevity outstanding at over 15 hours on skin.

Fusion Sacree Lui was a relatively risky blind buy that unfortunately did not payoff. With a nose as skilled as Bertrand Duchaufour's it is near impossible not to have relatively high expectations, but even his vast skill couldn't save this one. The primary two culprits to the composition's ultimate failure lie with its liberal use of anise and celery seed. These two notes just don't mesh well with the caramel, and as the composition is highly linear they hang around for all but the first 30 seconds of the fragrance's amazingly long lifespan. I will give some props to Duchaufour for creating a gourmand that is not particularly sweet, but in this case even that attribute isn't enough. The bottom line is the $125 per 50 ml bottle Fusion Sacre Lui contains super-high quality and concentrated juice that has the performance metrics to match, but it is somewhat unpleasant smelling and highly annoying as time passes, earning a below average 2 to 2.5 stars out of 5. Gourmand fans that particularly enjoy anise may find the composition much more appealing than I, but if an anise gourmand is your thing, vintage Yohji Homme is a better bet for similar money.

There I was, looking for caramel, coffee and rum when all of a sudden...
Holy celery Batman!
I've been moping around wanting to try this one forever, and tnx to my darling friend Oktopusy finally got a huge sample as a present.
Can you say disappointed? Can you say toxic celery blast?
Once the blasted celery deigned to leave, I was left with drunken caramel loveliness that's to die for. Alas, I died quite enough thank you very much fighting that darn celery off for the first hour and a half. Thankfully off my wish list.

FUTURE FUSION
I have been following Duchaufour's interpretation of perfumes and for me he has a different state of mind and highly skilled nose for skilled noses.Ok it is free for everybody to write reviews but we have to be realistic. Our tastes, our nose standards and every other back ground can be different but we all have to respect reality.
I am not gonna use fancy words such as caramel usage or other etc.. bla bla...
Here what I detect is the masterpiece of a highly skilled and qualifired nose.AS we all know kurkdijan is perfect in orange usage. But the orange in fusion sacre is incredible, that ? have never detected before. For me this work is one of the best of duchaoufor's one of the best that I smelled till now.A true masterpiece

The Shaman
They are the medicine men and the magicians of ancient peoples and cultures.
Mysterious and very powerful priests of the interrealm of worlds.
They heal, enchant, and influence the body and soul of everyone.
Shamans are true artists in the creation of poisons and potions,
like this one,...Fusion sacrée obscure/lui.

This fragrance is like a sweet, intoxicating, and addictive poison.
A dangerous essence for all involved who use and wear it.
It contains the essence of desire and longing.
A love potion that seduces and touches you through the nose and skin.
A melodic, whispering choir of temptation and seduction emanates from it.
Bertrand Duchaufour must have mastered the art of a shaman
to brew it.

Almost intoxicating rum notes, sweet orange, and cardamom open the spell.
They purposefully seek out their allies.

Coffee, cloves, and the scent of fully ripe pears promise more.
It is not yet complete, but soon.

The spark of eroticism and seduction ignites with vanilla, caramel, amber, musk
and a soft licorice note.
The potion begins to live...

The perfume is like a snake on the skin, doubling itself every minute.
It winds itself around every inch of skin and crawls into every pore.
Once it has taken hold, it seeks new victims in the nearby scent aura.
Fusion sacrée obscure/lui is contagious... highly contagious in my opinion.
An erotic and infectious drug that envelops everything and settles upon it.
It is enchanting or rather aphrodisiacal for oneself and others.
Delicious and tempting.
Since it lasts a very long time, everyone must bear or endure the consequences themselves.
But there are worse things!

I thank a very dear perfumist for administering the poison.

Candied Powerhouse
When a sacred dark fusion smells like it does in this case, one can either passionately criticize the quirky naming or simply enjoy the fragrance. It indeed starts off rumbly (without the h), but cleverly disguises overly tipsy tendencies with secondary notes. Sniffing out the sweet orange is still relatively easy - possibly because it complements the rum aromas with fruity lightness. I can hardly pinpoint the herbal-citrus notes, but after all, a "fusion" is being served; at least in this regard, the fragrance lives up to its name.

Regardless of this opening, it is the caramelization of the ingredients that shapes the scent journey: A delicately spiced sugar melt floats as a leitmotif in the bouquet, enveloping its various companions with a sweet, quite edible candied quality and enhancing the honey-warm tuberose aromas. The fact that the coffee makes at best a subtle appearance benefits the composition. Otherwise, it might olfactorily land too close to an afternoon gathering with pastries and a good cup of Viennese melange - an association that is indeed quite tangible (and thus at least avoids the foamy Starbucks variant with a pre-packaged cake counter).

Otherwise, "fusion" is again the theme here. Even the spice-scented clove, which usually has a very specific aroma, blends into the scene in the best patissier manner, without breaking into Christmas carols. "Fusion sacrée obscur" remains true to its concept and is so far a thoroughly successful gourmand-sweet charmer.

That the fragrance, despite all its power, does not drift into the cardboardy is thanks to the smoky resins, which unobtrusively but perceptibly provide the aromas with space to unfold, both scattering and binding them, thereby achieving the feat of keeping the caramelization flowing.

In the end, however, the cream cake wins. This is due to the massive bombardment with all sorts of other sweet stuff: Sweet-smelling wood shavings, especially amber and vanilla, condense into a creamy consistency that seemed smoky just moments ago. Figuratively speaking, creamy-sweet lava eventually crawls over the skin; only occasionally do bubbles form on the viscous surface. When they burst, they still emit pleasantly resinous smoke, infused with vanilla-soaked caramel and all sorts of other things that have either been perfectly 'fused' or (and this is my wicked theory) ultimately stand no chance against the sweet overkill.

The most astonishing thing about "Fusion sacrée obscur" for me is the fact that I have just described a fragrance that usually makes my neck hairs stand on end: Very gourmand and undeniably sweet, almost sugary on top of that. However, the urge to wash it off does not arise; instead, I find myself sniffing again and again, even though I am searching in vain for both darkness and the sacred. For that, I experience an exceptionally successful composition that - in this regard (!) not unlike "Oud safe the King" - literally whets the appetite.

Regardless, I will not wear this fragrance; a sugared sarungal would feel overly costumed. However, getting to know "Fusion sacrée obscur" was a great pleasure, from which I have been able to draw for a long, very long time during our three test encounters so far: The longevity is indeed extraordinarily good. The same goes for the sillage: It has impact and candied effortlessly in passing, which is no small feat.

My thanks go to Palonera for the unsolicited donation in the best sense - and to Bertrand Duchaufour, who has created a rather convincing sweet 'stinker' with "Fusion sacrée obscur." Anyone who appreciates this fragrance direction cannot miss out on a test!
