End and beginning
The Count sits at his desk, the green leather desk pad empty except for a sheet of paper, and looks out of the window. The weather is beautiful, unusually warm for the time of year. It is November 10, 1918, and yesterday they actually did it, proclaimed the republic, a fall from grace. Today, the masses are crowding the streets, celebrating and chanting. The fools. The mob repels them, but at least they can't be heard here. The geraniums and a few roses are still in bloom. The sun shines on them, bright and friendly, as if to mock him. The smell coming through the open window doesn't fit in with his gloomy thoughts either: sweet, gentle and spicy, slightly like damp earth, like the first harbingers of autumn. Disgusted, he closes the window.

He opens the bottom drawer of the desk. There it lies, the nickel-plated surface gleaming silvery, the mother-of-pearl of the handle shimmering elegantly. It lies heavy in his hand, his father's old revolver, six chambers filled with death or perhaps salvation. The hammer snaps into place with an inviting click. Is this the solution?

He puts it back and opens the window. He wants to enjoy the mild air once more. We'll see what the future brings. The bottom drawer is never locked.

----------------------

Aristocrat from the MGO is fortunately not just for aristocrats. But it does have something distinguished and noble about it, although I expressly do not want to ascribe these qualities to the aristocracy then and especially not today.

Although this Aristocrat was released in 2016, its design is so classic that it could easily be 100 years older, at least in terms of the (fragrance) principle. It focuses on rose geranium, even if a small rose can be detected from time to time. Together with a little nutmeg, it forms the starting point: gentle, sweet, slightly fresh and pleasantly (subtly) spicy. There is a slight sweetness and something subtly resinous. This is soon supported by fresh, light green vetiver and later a slightly earthy note from the patch, which is also rather light in color. Only in the base does the fragrance become more tart, although this is only a snapshot, as there is also some vanilla and resin (I don't recognize ambergris here, but amber). Like the entire fragrance, the vanilla is used discreetly here and, for once, doesn't bother me. Although it becomes a little more pronounced as the fragrance progresses, it remains within limits.

Rose geranium is one of the few flowers that I like, but I prefer the tart, spicy version, such as in Marlborough by Trumper. Like here (sweet-floral, soft-spicy) and then with a vanilla-amber base, I shouldn't really like it. The fact that I still like Aristokrat is due to the quality of Mr. Staudt's composition: dense and yet clear, delicate, light and pleasantly restrained. In my opinion, this makes the fragrance wearable all year round. Will it last in the long run? We'll see what the future brings.

a belated "Grand Tour"
The gentleman with the striking features looked around his garden.
He had just returned to England yesterday and was now getting to know his garden again. Too long had he been away.
For months he had been travelling in Europe and the Middle East; a very belated "Grand Tour": it was part of his family's upbringing. Only other things had always intervened with him. So the started this great journey "on the continent" only after his retirement.

The warmth and the flavors of the Mediterranean and the Orient still dominated skin and senses. So he looked at his carefully tended country house garden from the new angle:

Did he want to continue living with it or should he change something?

Sensitized to his surroundings by the travel impressions, he perceived their scents for the first time so really consciously.
The heavy spicy, a little scratchy aroma of rose geranium - often called "English geranium" - dominated at first.
Eventually he had the obligatory rhododrendron hedge replaced by one of numerous plants of rose geranium. This seemed to him less dark and threatening; after all, it bounded the entire curving driveway leading from the gate to the house.
For he certainly did not want a second "Manderley" with its menacing plant growth.
This hedge, studded with many flowers, exuded an herbaceous spice that was balancing to the being and senses.
Today, for the first time, he caught a whiff of nutmeg; was it still sitting in his memory, or did it add to the radiance of this hedge?
Smiling, he turned to the splendour of his peonies; how he loved them, with their delicate early summer fragrance, intensifying towards evening, and their thick coloured flowerheads.
He deliberately sucked in their scent, noting how harmoniously this floral richness complemented the somewhat harsh yet aromatic herbaceousness of rose geranium and that slight pinch of nutmeg.
So slowly, with the onset of dusk, the earthy green dampness of vetiver also made itself felt. It was accompanied by golden-brown patchouli in fragrant waves.
At that moment, he smelled the original English country life!
This was where his roots were!
And yet something was missing: something that had accompanied him the last time!
What might that be?
Thoughtfully, he buried his nose in the collar of the old tweed jacket that had accompanied him all the way.
Warm creamy vanilla and the smoky beauty of amber rose from the coarse fabric and a smile spread across his features:
This is what he wanted! This complex floral-spicy creation would continue to surround his life with fragrance.

Surely "Aristocrat" has been developed in a laboratory of the fragrance anchor MGO Duftmanufaktur.
No one stands in an English garden with its austere beauty, Mediterranean and Oriental at heart, and creates a fragrance.
And yet, this aromatic creation tells me its story that way as it settles comfortably and pleasantly flowing and fragrant on my skin.
There this scented creature remains for several hours; breathing calmly and evenly as I enjoy its presence.
The aromatherapeutic effects of rose geranium keep me tightly embraced and thus some disturbing factors away.

"Aristocrat" is distinguished, yet self-confident and idiosyncratic.
A composition that for once does not follow the usual chypre pattern, but walks on its own fragrance paths.
That makes this noble creature a pleasant and sympathetic companion, which does not necessarily have to act in the front row among the loud busybodies!
Just yet an aristocrat and perfect gentleman!

"One piece" or more "Made to measure"?
I have a small sample from the aristocrat now already over scarcely two years. It's one of the few fragrances that still linger in my resubmission for this long time and simply can't be ''written off''. But you can't have everything at once. And the scents of MGO do not appear very often in the souk. Thus I always lacked a sufficient filling, in order to form me a final judgement.

Although the aristocrat didn't really fit into my booty scheme, I couldn't let him go. Maybe because of his name I always associated the fine thread that I don't have or wear? So in the end I always kept my distance from him. But that didn't impress him much.

It is and remains a fine, noble, masculine fragrance that combines creaminess, freshness and astringency. I never wondered what notes and ingredients this fragrance was made of. It was hopeless for me to detect anything from this densely woven carpet. And so he stood there, as a solitaire in my sample rack, without ever revealing any development or tendency. I've never seen anything like it in all this time. And every time I checked the sample again, after a millisecond the memory was awake: "Yes, that's it, but we can't get any further like that."

So now I finally have a bottling and I applied the scent to my body for a daily test. It's him, unmistakable. I had concerns that (by my standards) mildness might suffocate me. Fortunately not. Not powdery sticky. Not too cute. Everything is very close to the wrist tests. And in the evening, the bitter almost turned into leather. I felt comfortable, which is not necessarily my concern when wearing a fragrance. This is the right place. This could really be my second suit scent where I don't have or wear suits. But then the aristocrat bridges that.
