History will wash off
Paestum: an old Romanian city in Campania region of Italy. Having a message in the name of perfume is a habit of Eau d'Italie.

The order of the words is wrong. First comes the rose. It seems to be a tea rose with honeyed rum, a literally ass drunk fragrance. In the bottle or on the paper. It turns out very fast, that someone paid to the paper for keeping silence or lying. This rose is very calm and soft on the skin, lovely and charming, not luscious or narcotic at all.
Then comes the weird feeling what catches you, when you are observing old ruins - it is so scratchy and so dry, what I was unable to imagine after this nice beginning. It was too much, I had to scrub it down.

Frankincense, opoponax, papyrus - there is a long enumeration of my favorite notes, but the final result does not sing a song of harmony, but the ballad of passing.

I Love Rose Scents, Just Not Really This One...
Despite the long list of notes, Paestum Rose on my skin is almost all rose with cinnamon, and a light incense undertone. It is a pleasant scent, but not one I care much to wear (and I love rose scents as a general rule). I wish I could write something more substantial about it, but I really found it nice enough, but completely uninteresting. Longevity is average, as is projection. A very hesitant thumbs up, but I personally would look elsewhere if I wanted a rose scent before buying this one. 3 of 5 stars.

The end of my Bertrand Duchaufour winning streak...
I am baffled as to how I have managed to select for testing--completely my chance--so many creations by Bertrand Duchaufour in recent weeks. In any case, we've been on a real winning streak, as my opinion of his talent has been serially confirmed. It had to happen eventually, but we've finally hit rough waters: Eau d'Italie PAESTUM ROSE.

Upon application, I was delighted by the excitement which this boozy, spicy, woody rose appeared to hold in store for me. I really found the opening rather intoxicating. As the commotion slowly subsided, however, the thump of one note became louder and louder--rather like Edgar Allen Poe's tell-tale heart--yes, what had held so much promise before suddenly morphed before my genteel nose into a big, fat, loud cumin rose à la The Different Company ROSE POIVREE, a Jean-Claude Elléna creation with a very similar effect upon me.

No, I can now safely induce from the two cases of rose + cumin which I have encountered to date: I do not appreciate this particular combination of notes. It appears that many other people do however like PAESTUM ROSE, and I can definitely recommend this creation for testing by anyone who happens to like The Different Company ROSE POIVREE. For me, this is a big-time no-go--I won't even be draining the contents of my skimpy sample vial.

Hélas, PAESTUM ROSE was the end of a winning streak for me and Bertie.

Shimmering myrrh and peppered rose
This translucent wash of rose, myrrh, and black pepper – set over a base of incensey cedar or cedar-ish incense (depending on the angle you look at it) – never strikes me as being as dark or as gothic as some reviews describe it. However, there is a water-washing-over-river-stones quality to the myrrh that lends it a certain seriousness, like delicate roses bleached of their lifeblood, their pinkness fading slowly to greige. The tartness of the pepper tickles my taste buds in much the same way as Epic Woman does, but this is far more sheer and weightless a composition. I also sense the urinous greenness of blackcurrant bud, sucking any moisture out of the air.

For years, I vacillated between Costes I and Paestum Rose, as I see these fragrances as two sides of the same coin – transparent, spiced woods and rose – and for a while was sold on the more cinnamony Costes I. But my fascination with the Costes waned as I could never get it to rouse itself past the first, shy, minor C wave of aroma it summoned. Paestum Rose, while almost equally as sheer as the Costes, seems somehow more robust and characterful in construction, so I sold my two bottles of Costes I and purchased a bottle of Paestum Rose in 2017. Doesn’t matter now, of course – both the Costes and Paestum Rose have been discontinued. Rozu by Aesop might be an adequate substitute for the airy, piquant freshness of the peppery rose smell that I love so much, but I’m doubtful. Paestum Rose is one of my most worn rose fragrances of all time, because it’s just so damn easy to wear, yet never less than soulful.

The Roses in Paestum Wear Spiked Collars and Scratch Themselves on the Scrotum
I apologize in advance to the sensitive souls who might perceive my remarks as a verbal aesthetic insult to a perfume commentary. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Is that good? And now it has to come out:

The roses in Paestum must be really nasty testosterone machines: They don't grow from the earth-the earth spits them out. They don't have thorns-they wear spiked collars. They don't smell-they exude!!

Seriously. I have never smelled such robust, hyper-masculine roses! Even though not all of the accords listed above mean much to me-I can certainly imagine some of them in tons for “Paestum Rose.” A massively sour blackcurrant, wickedly bitter Satanist patchouli, pepper in the form of pepper spray, lumberjack cedar, incense and myrrh from the dark catacombs beneath St. Peter's Basilica, and all sorts of obscure things.

I can easily imagine such a scent on a man (even though the rather persistent medicinal-alcoholic odor would irritate me). On a woman, only with a lot of imagination. But perhaps I am too traditional in this regard.

And now I'm going to wash this stuff off: Otherwise, something might grow on me. (Thanks, Peet!)

A gothic woody rose of uncertain gender, it could be worn by night creepers of all persuasions . . .

So red as blood
Silk roses bloom
In Aphrodite's temple,
Where woods float
And myrrh glows.

Great brand: The well-known theme of pepper & incense is enhanced by rose and myrrh, surprisingly making it shine.

Little rose to be detected. Incense of the sharp kind. Plus spice that reminds me of fermented Maggi sauce. In the end, more harmonious.

Poseidonia, abandoned by the gods. Dust of crumbling temples on dark-sweet roses. Smoke offerings.
Melancholic beauty.

Retro-esque, spicy-herbaceous, slightly waxy rose. Very dense. Initially a bit muted, then wonderfully incense-soft over time.

Reminds me a lot of medicinal drops. Iberogast or Bronchicum or something like that. I can already make out rose and frankincense.

Anyway, beautifully irritating and fascinating - bittersweetly sad.

A nostalgic blend of roses combined with berry, slightly bitter notes and a hint of incense. A noble, comforting soul-soother that lasts well.
