Powerful Juice

This is my most potent fragrance in my collection. My skin normally drinks fragrances like an athlete drinking water to rehydrate…not The Moon.

This is a gorgeous and I mean gorgeous raspberry oud cocktail. It is loud so apply with being cognizant of others. I usually apply 1-2 sprays. That’s it. It will go as long as you want it to go. Seriously. If you don’t wash it off, it will stay on skin overnight. Sometime I test fragrances during the evenings and I wore this to bed. I couldn’t sleep because it was so distracting. I had to get up and wash it off. That only removed the fragrance sitting on top of my skin and not the fragrance that seeped into the tissue.

If you wear this during a hot day, you will smell like delicious raspberry sorbet. The oud in here is perfect. I’m not an oud guy but this is what I would like all my oud fragrances to be. Just enough to know it’s there and not being the main accord.

I love The Moon and it is my favorite from the desert gem collection.

REMOVE THE BERRIES!

The raspberry/fruit notes are a bit much. Too piquant. Too unnatural. I can feel it on my tongue and it burns the throat. But the underlying (real) oud and smoky frankincense are phenomenal. I wish the fruit notes had been removed almost entirely and replaced with something herbaceous, green, and light florals. Even more oud. Maybe a touch of musk. Then it would've really sang. Still, there's a richness and artistry here that's undeniable. Of the Desert Gems collection, I like Promise more.

Irresistible Raspberry and Oud

The Moon is absolutely exceptional, sumptuous, mesmerizing, mellow scent where addictive fruity notes meet beautifully gentle animalic Oud and smooth leather. That exceptionality has, however, been lost over the years as the fragrance profile has become so popular. It still doesn't diminish the magic of this scent. I’m crazy about the combination of Raspberry and Oud and Raspberry and leather so this blend is like a dream for me. It’s easily too much for many but personally it stays right on the border of being very versatile and it’s like a vivid magical potion that truly touches my senses. The right amount of the mellifluous sweetness together with the mysterious darkness has already made this concoction a legend. It’s warm and powerful yet soft and refined. Divine.

I haven’t tried the most recent batches but I’ve read that they are not so fruity. I somehow understand the reformulation if it has something to do with the regulation- hate those though- but why to destroy the idea of the scent by reducing the fruity flavor. But I have read also about the scent being too fruity for some people so those who didn’t like these earlier batches could love the new formula. My bottle is from 2022 and I recognize the difference between the juice from 2019. My sample was that original formula and it was a little bit fruitier than this 2022. So if you are thinking to buy this scent, you should think what kind of amount fruitiness is best for you and choose the batch in based on that.

A stunning fruity floral oud fragrance - unparalleled in quality and cost

The Moon is one of Desert Gems from Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, a collection anchored on the oud accord. The combination of fruity accords and dark woods is a hallmark of its perfumer Julien Rasquinet. I have been interested in this combination for a while, which was not represented in my collection. This review is based on a full bottle purchased after testing The Moon many times in stores.

Every member of the Desert Gems uses high quality ingredients. The notes listed for The Moon by Frederic Malle and other websites are raspberry, blackberry, lychee, red currant, saffron, frankincense, Turkish rose, oud and leather. You can smell every note from the beginning. There is no noticeable progression in this perfume, a characteristic I have noticed in expensive oud and leather perfumes. I get red berries, lychee and saffron very clearly. Rose is also detectable in The Moon though it is mild. The combination of saffron, fruits, rose and frankincense create a single accord that give out a peppery vibe. After the initial strong opening, oud and frankincense form the solid dark backbone of The Moon. Leather doesn’t stand out as an independent note but adds color to frankincense and oud. Almost every note is perceptible even at the very end, though at different levels. The genius of the perfumer blends these three clusters of notes – fruits, flowers and wood/oud/leather/incense – into a wholesome harmony. It is one of the most stunning perfumes that I have come across in my pursuits.

The Moon shows excellent performance as expected from the high-quality raw materials used in it. The dominant notes lasts 10-12 hours on my skin with exceptional sillage. The Moon is too opulent to be worn in an office setting. Its complexity would be lost in a party setting also. It fits best in the rarified atmosphere of board rooms and executive corner offices where no other strong smells exist. Because of this lack of versatility, I like to enjoy it in my solitude at home.

This is a phenomenal work of art from Julien Rasquinet, and it remains the Platonic ideal for fruity oud fragrances. The quality of the raw materials and the genius of the perfumers are displayed prominently in The Moon. But the Desert Gems is one of the most expensive collections on the market. Considering bang for the buck, I am not certain if The Moon is worth the money. It costs $550 for 50 ml through official channels, and not much less at discounters. Unfortunately, 10 ml travel size bottles and decants are hard to come by. Though I am happy to have it, I cannot recommend this to everyone in good faith. As the subtleties of perfumes are rarely transmitted to bystanders, you are the only judge of its merits. So, choose wisely before you shell out $550. I will use it sparingly to avoid having to buy another bottle.
