An Ode to Floral Tea Fragrances
Balenciaga announcing this line of fragrances was not something I was expecting by any means. Going into it, I did have some hopes they’d be good given the bottle design alone. To Be Confirmed was, by far, the one that intrigued me the most thanks to its use of baihao yinzhen tea, or otherwise known as silverneedle tea.
Immediately in the opening, you get a good, healthy dose of the tea note and all of its thirst quenching goodness. Alongside it lies a white floral note, though not one I immediately recognised. In fact, it was one I could not recall ever having smelled in a fragrance before now. This floral note was elevating the fragrance’s scent profile and taking it into a more fresh-spicy-floral direction. Baihao yinzhen tea itself was already a fairly floral tea note, but I couldn’t help but notice the subtle powderiness as well as the subtle spiciness that was found in this fragrance. Where else but the floral notes could they be coming from? At this point in the fragrance, I was enjoying my time with To Be Confirmed, and all I could hope for is to not have the fragrance ruined by another accord waiting to show its ugly face.
As the drydown began and the fragrance continued to develop, one thing was for certain: there was nothing going to muddle the silver needle filled beauty seen in the opening. As I reached the falling action of this fragrance though, I realised that what I saw in the opening was all I was ever going to see. An unknown, but welcome floral accord mixed in with baihao yinzhen tea was all that made this fragrance up. A two accord long piece of poetry that got straight to the point, and gave me all that I wanted and none of what I didn’t.
This fragrance within minutes had my mind racing, in a very good way. I wanted to know more about this scent, I wanted to HAVE more of this beautiful scent I was wearing. The mininal amount of accords showing through could come off as basic or boring for some. But, personally, I believe the use of uncommon notes, and how tastefully they’re being executed, plays to this fragrance’s strengths. Its simplicity is its best attribute. It is the definition of “all killer, no filler”. This fragrance is an invitation to all lovers of the tea note to give it a shot. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up loving it as much as I did. From what I could gather, I can safely confirm that this fragrance is a winner.
