Amor de loca juventud
I have never been to Cuba, but imagination can take you pretty far. Imagine a tropical market, because you smell fresh chiles, dried chiles (Peruvian aji amarillo??), slightly unripe mango, green tobacco, dried tobacco and, the apex note: a perfect rendition of the middle notes of a Cuban cigar, an expensive Cohiba. Trumper does not dare mentioning it, although it is so obviously an impression of a good cigar in there. As long as I have this cologne, I shall never miss my crazy younger days when we bought far too expensive Cuban cigars (and you could smoke them anywhere). The best part of it is also, really, to smell them before smoking them.

A little grapefruit freshness as described perhaps, but: I invite you to rather imagine a gentleman's club in the tropics, and you are just a millisecond from your first sip of the Cuban cocktail El Presidente – just as the nose prepares you to enjoy the combination of orange curaçao, white rum, the spices of a Dolin blanc vermouth, freshly made grenadine syrup from fresh pomegranates, and, as the finishing touch, a fresh twist of lemon peel squeezed over the glass and discarded, for the most delicate citrus oil scent you ever had.

For the first time, I rate something 10, because I really would not know what else to do. Most tobacco scents are a bit strange or too sweet for my taste, although I like them well enough on others. And I certainly do not like the generic, synthetic "tropical note" of whatever kind. But Trumper's Havana is a masterpiece. It is a cologne in character, meaning that it gives a fresh impression and does not have any heavy sillage. It is rounded and subtle enough for daytime and evening use the year around. Apply it in an early summer's evening as a perfect top-up of whatever cologne you took in the morning. Indulge in the dreams of a tropical summer on any winter party, or whenever you want. If you are looking for a ~12 hours longevity perfume, this is not it, but it lasts on me maybe 6-8 hours.

Not Trump.....but Trumper
Founded in 1875, at a time when British gentlemen still alternated daily between colonial administration and beard polish, Geo. F. Trumper quickly became the ultimate address for any man who thought that shaving without a silver brush and sandalwood was a form of defeat.
Originally intended as a barber's shop, Trumper quickly developed into a temple of fragrance for the Empire, where the moustache was oiled and the ego perfumed. Winston Churchill & Ian Flemming were among the customers...and so even James Bond became a wearer of the brand's most famous fragrance: Eucris Eau de Toilette

Havana is a newer fragrance from this brand, but is clearly reminiscent of classic barbershop days.

Attitude towards life:
Imagine yourself: You are sitting in a heavy leather armchair on the veranda of a Cuban villa, circa 1890... A sultry wind carries the scent of rum, cigars, tropical flowers and an unexpected citrus to you.

The opening:
Somehow a shallow macho bang of sweet tobacco, lavender and unexpected citrus. It is definitely nice that the surroundings are not overwhelmed.
A symbiosis of "tobacco alki-gourmand" and barbershop....Have I already mentioned that I definitely appreciate these two genres?

The heart:
Soft spicy notes, a little patchouli, maybe even clove, who knows for sure? It all seems like something out of a Victorian diary... You can literally smell someone in a pith helmet and monocle writing a poem about the sunset while complaining about the heat.

The base:
A warm finish of ambergris and musk, reminiscent of the heavy wood of colonial furniture - or the sweaty leather vest of a colonial official on his way home.

However, the durability is much more short-lived than the existence of the "Empire"...After a good 4 hours, "Havana" clearly comes to its knees.

The wearer?
A man with a tie, pipe and firm opinions about gin, who wonders while shaving why civilization always smells so good - as long as he is allowed to define it himself.

Conclusion:
"Havana" is a modern fragrance of the past.
It is dramatic, sweet, smoky - somehow fallen out of time...And an old man likes that very much.
But stylish. So stylish that you almost forget how inappropriate it is....
The price also brings a smile to my face...

Complex and interesting. I find this outstanding. I didn't set out to have a "signature scent" but this has become just that.
