Helmut Lang edp
This was a re-release, and presumably slightly tweaked, version of the original 2000 rendition which I have not had the pleasure of smelling. But if people think this current version is inferior, then the original must have really been something else.

I try really hard to avoid assigning perfumes a gender when I am testing them, but I still find things that I simply would prefer to smell on a woman than on myself. The more perfume I try, the easier it becomes for me to just smell fragrance and feel that it is something that works for me. Helmut Lang EDP was a little bit of a breakthrough for me in this sense, because the first time I wore this I decided that it was overly floral, and therefore a bit too feminine. But the beauty here is sublime, and once it seeps into you the enchantment unfolds.

It opens with a soft explosion of orange blossom, lavender, and hint of heliotrope. Right from the beginning there is a foundation of borderline-clean musk, that adds heft to the ethereal nature of the flowers. I find it interesting that sites like Fragrantica don’t list musk as an official note; it is the back bone of this fragrance.

A few minutes in, something really lovely happens in the heart. The orange blossom seems to bloom after the lavender and other aromatics recede, and it leaves this impression of fizzy orange flavoured musk that really becomes the soul of this fragrance. The powdery elements of the heliotrope never cross the line of suffocation, but you sense its presence as if the breeze had blown the odour back through an open window.

It all comes to rest on a creamy cedar base – my guess is the atlas variety – and slowly dissipates like fog being burnt up by sunshine, as opposed to progressing through a series of accords to ita final resting place. This billowing perfume lasts on me a good part of the day and doesn’t project loudly, and yes, at first glance you might perceive it as something you are used to smelling on women. But all you manly men, sometimes you need to let yourself feel beautiful.

Creamy, fresh musk lilting between clean and smutty
Maurice Roucel takes his Musc Ravageur out of the bedroom and into the nursery. If Musc Ravageur is lying spread-eagled in the boudoir, spilling out of its red lace teddy and trying to disguise its Adam’s apple, Helmut Lang EDP is the tender gripe-water exhalation from a baby sleeping in its cradle. The opening reminds me pleasantly of nightly bath time rituals with my children when they were small: Chicco calendula and lavender baby wash, the smell of plush cotton baby towels fresh from the drier, and the innocent smell of the skin at the nape of their necks. Helmut Lang EDP smells milky and warm and fresh and innocent to me. Later, it strikes me that the musk and vanilla is on the knife’s edge of being not-so-innocent after all. But then, I like musks that dance on that sometimes razor thin line between clean and smutty. I cannot buy this in Europe, so once my bottle’s done, I may switch to Carnicure by Marlou.

Classically clean...
I believe the above would be the most fitting expression for this perfume.

As I haven't smelled the original, a comparison is not possible but it's a floral musky clean and powdery perfume with a very finetuned mix of lavender, patchouli, sandalwood, heliotrope and orange blossom.
Strangely, it somehow reminds me of a perfume my mother used to wear ages ago, and since the only one I can recall her wearing is the Maurer & Wirtz 4711 original, that must be it - even though this seems more powerful and less feminine. Maybe it's the patchouli/rose mix ? I haven't smelled the 4711 for about 20 years though, so I can't be certain.

All in all, a very fine quality perfume and with excellent longevity.

Trendy and Elegant
Helmut Lang's minimalist fashion has always existed between the cornerstones of trendy and elegant: just affordable enough to love, but also challenging enough to feel ahead of its time. With the return of the beloved and painfully missed Helmut Lang Eau de Parfum, I was thrilled to discover that the captivating balance of the musk notes - wonderfully soft, yet with a striking undertone of animal sensuality - is still intact. The first version of this atmospheric, compelling fragrance may have been released a decade ago, but I was not at all surprised to find that the scent feels as if it is always ahead of its time.

The contrasts of this perfume are noticeable from the very beginning. A fleeting powdery note kicks things off and grants the accompanying lavender and rosemary an uncharacteristically delicate softness. Over time, however, an emerging heart note of rose and jasmine leads the musk in a different direction; it gives it a slightly masculine, animalistic element that stands in contrast to the heart note but never overpowers it. Once the amber-wood-patchouli base takes hold, the fragrance reveals what it truly is - a flawlessly balanced masterpiece. Whether you are new to Helmut Lang or have been eagerly awaiting its return, you are dealing with something truly special here.

Shame

There are occurrences that one will not understand quickly. With what justification do some botched perfumes even come to market, and why are some masterpieces discarded? Questions that many perfume enthusiasts are likely grappling with across various forums here.

The newly re-released and long discontinued Helmut Lang EdP is a prime example of such a riddle. The sensually cultivated scent is indeed linear, but by no means monotonous. This gentle blend of lavender and soapy notes, woody and amber nuances, and especially patchouli plus musk ensures that. The latter is not officially mentioned, but is undoubtedly very present.
From time to time, one can even perceive quite gentle traces of orange.

Despite being an EdP variant, it is rather subdued here. This means that the longevity is decent, and the presence is relatively understated. That has to suffice, as Helmut Lang is designed as a subtle accent, not as a loud statement.

No doubt: whoever created this sweet-spicy finely balanced perfume knows their craft. This is evidenced not only by the high rating here but also by the seemingly great demand on the internet. Almost astronomical sums are being asked for this EdP on the bay. That is both a shame and a disgrace.

Subtle woody-spicy body with a hint of floral. Subtle eroticism that feels neither too strong nor vulgar.

Smooth, soft skin scent with a pastel vanilla tone. Unisex, herbal, slightly animalistic, pleasing. Very calm yet erotic.

Starts spicy androgynous and develops into powdery sweet and smoky-soft nuances with an animalistic touch. A grand (arthouse) cinema!

It was never in and will never be out. Such fragrances withstand trends and choose their wearers. Not the other way around. Pure. Sweet. Awesome.

First fresh-herbaceous, rather classic. Then spicy-sweet-woody-powdery; in the end sweet coumarin and patchouli. Good, but not a revelation.

Even if you, like me, don't like HL, you should try this: Patchouli, amber, lavender, with an underlying spiciness. A very stylish metrosexual scent!

Fine, calm, elegant, casual. Woody, powdery feel-good scent with a subtly woven animalistic edge. Wellness and eroticism...both at once.

More sensual and rounded than the EDC. It's not so herbal-fresh - more of an animalistic warm powder scent - without annoying synthetics. The best!!!

From green-herb-spicy to fiery-soap-spicy to warm-woody with a soft-full base without vanilla, a polished impression, yet sensual.
