Fierce Carnation
Philtre goes on hot: a spicy blast of carnation and clove, cooled only slightly by a mild green note in the background, a pinch of pepper brightening the blend.

The carnation note here is quite naturalistic - a bit harsh, but vivid. I’m not a perfumer myself, but having owned some carnation absolute, with its richly spicy, slightly tomato-y facets, I suspect it may be involved in Philtre’s creation.

As it develops on skin, a powdered ginger and vanilla accord reminds me of gingerbread for a while, before it takes a waxy turn, beeswax making the final chapter a clove candle.

Philtre feels part of a genus of carnation perfumes mostly found in niche: dense, rich, carnation fragrances that focus heavily on the flower's potent spiciness. Related fragrances to my nose are Angelos Olfactives Creations L’oeilliet (more Caron-esque); JAR Golconda (with jasmine), maybe at a distance, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Oeillets Rouges (more paraffin-candle than beeswax candle).

Carnation chokehold
The carnation takes a moment to emerge but as soon it does the cloud of this powdery-spicy floral gets so dense and palpable, it grabs you by the throat. Cloves are added without any restraint - as well as musks - but that is about as far as the composition goes. A carnation soliflor, I suppose? It appears a retro vibe à la Œillet Louis XV (2012) was the aim here, but it turned out a caricature of extreme proportions. In fairness, the initial chokehold sensation is gone after a while and the musks do a decent job. Still, it missed the mark overall if you ask me.

A yearning, operatic carnation
Despite being inspired by Tristan and Isolde, if this scent were an opera it would be Werther: deeply 1800s romantic and reluctant to keep both feet in the modern world.

There are so many natural perfume brands I love, but imo Hiram Green is the one that has perhaps been the most successful at cracking the code of replicating the deeply thoughtful, full-bodied character of classic perfumery without synthetics (of course the Queen, Mandy Aftel, does this too but leans a bit more animalistic).

Upon first application, I get a surprising amount of juicy, juicy rose and restrained jasmine, followed by a clove and pepper blast that puts a playful tingle in the nose. It evolves into a whole carnation plant with tannins and freshly-snapped stems, before settling into a softer, petal-y bloom with a hint of powder. This is a scent that eases into its wearability, the spice base smooths out and the jasmine and vanilla come together to create a subtle creaminess. Wears like silky red dress (or ascot).

Like many classic perfumes, it can feel out of time with the trends of modern perfumery, though that's one of the things I love most about it. I've had many people notice and be taken in by it, as it doesn't smell like most other scents. It makes my introverted self feel confident and expressive.

I think it's quite well priced - natural materials are incredibly expensive and you don't need to apply much to make an impact. And the new bottles with wooden tops are elegant and tie into the brand themes really well.

Quite lovely this one. It's a cozy, sweet, and cinnamon-like/spicy, resinous blend that revolves around a strong, starchy, powdery carnation, laced with creamy vanilla, suede, and cloves. It's relatively simple, but it has lasting power for sure - at least on me.

The carnation here is rich and full-bodied, and I found it reminiscent of Roos & Roos' White Ballad and Caron’s Tabac Blond, rather than the soapy variety found in Serge Lutens’ Vitriol d’Oeillet.

As it dries down, it does lose a bit of its complexity and edges into a sweeter, somewhat flatter territory, which is common for most of Hiram Green's creations, but it still feels satisfying and wearable. It also became a tad bit more aggressive, in the way how natural carnation absolute can sometimes be.

I’m not completely enamored with it, but it is definitely one I’d wear. I also like the name a lot.

The February days are dreary and gray. I write short letters to you, which I then throw into the fire. They can no longer reach you. Anna turns five tomorrow. Today I'm going to bake another cake, lots of cloves, just the way you like it and Anna likes it. I bought carnations in the little flower store by the canal and think about how you brought them to me back then. You philistine had mistaken them for roses. I didn't like carnations, was disappointed and sulkily threw them on the kitchen table. Today I can't imagine anything better. With every carnation that dies, a part of you goes. That's why I always buy a new bunch.
Yours.

Maman celebrates her 55th birthday tomorrow. I arrived the day before yesterday from Brittany. I haven't been to Maman's apartment for a long time. The clocks seem to have stood still here, even though she is still so young. The rooms are cool and there is a bunch of carnations in each one. Maman wears a red carnation in her lapel, as if she wants to resist at any moment. But she doesn't. She makes a fire in the evening. Sometimes she catches very resinous wood that floods the room with spice. Again and again she throws small pieces of paper into the fire, I don't ask why. She also avoids asking questions. For example, why I spend so long in the bathroom in the morning and why I skip wine for dinner. We both remain silent and clueless. Will you be there when I get back? Or are your eyes in the rear-view mirror and the swirling dust the last I've seen of you?
I would have liked to sign with "Yours". We both know that there should be a question mark behind it.
Anna.

Seriously? Carnations? You would have made Catherine, my grandmother, happy. Is that dusty or timeless? You nostalgic. I'm with Maman at the moment, as you know. She hasn't been the same since she left Brittany. Dad seems changed too. I don't ask questions, but I don't think Maman ever forgave him for running off when she was pregnant with me. She never said anything, but I can see in her eyes that she occasionally wishes him where the pepper grows. Her own silent carnation revolution.
De toute façon, I think of you and the night before I left. Alanis sang about having one hand in her pocket while I buried mine under your T-shirt. I haven't changed the sheets and would love to roll around in them right now. Too vanilla for you? Those who send carnations shouldn't throw stones. I didn't say that I would roll in it WITH YOU. That's how you like your women best, isn't it? Unpredictable. Will you be there when I get back?
Yours (?)

No fragrance comes as close as Philtre to capturing cloves and carnation in all its facets, both good and bad, while making it as wearable.

The opening is extremely green, almost minty, but it settles into a smooth, sweet floral. Fantastical garden vibes, w/ tiny fairies and all

Clove overload. A cloverload, if you will. Can’t say I get a whiff of carnation past the cloves.

I think about this perfume quite often. Intoxicating, heady, bewitching carnations. I love heavy and feverish florals like this

Overload of carnation. Makes it vintagey smelling. If you like No.5 or Tabac Blond, ull like this. Just not my type of scent i gravitate to.
