Not as dark or as lacivious as I'd remembered
What a difference a few years make! When I first smelled Isvaraya, composed by Francis Kurkdjian, I thought it was a surprisingly dark, almost animalic gothic stew of dusky purple things – plums, liquor, night-blooming jasmine, earthy patchouli. I remember it as a half-cousin of the brooding Un Parfum Cheri, Par Camille (Goutal), only not as forbidding or dry. Now, smelling it again years later, I still smell the indoles of the jasmine and the plumminess, but gone is the general air of seductive darkness, replaced by a pervasive cloud of sugary molecules, as if everything, patch included, has been spun into a huge ball of candy floss. It remains vaguely funky underneath (which I attribute to the halitosis honk of unneutered jasmine absolute) but it is as glittery as a disco ball on the surface. My daughter sprayed it this morning before I could warn her, but she loved it, telling me it smelled fizzy and powdery, like the sherbet powder you dip licked lollies into. And actually, I agree. Not sure if it is me or the perfume that has changed but Isvaraya is now child-safe. Still the best Indult fragrance, in my opinion, even if it is not quite as distinctive or as darkly sexy as I remember it.

A fruitchouli fit for a femme fatale
Note: I had a sample of Isvaraya (2006). The fragrance has gone through a reformulation in 2024 and Parfumo has decided not to create a seperate entry for the Isvaraya (2024) version. Note concentration and certain notes differ from the OG version.

Isvaraya (2006) is an intriguing fragrance. It's what I would call a "dark" fragrance. Picture a femme fatale in a noir film: sultry, sensual, decadent, mysterious, beautiful and alluring. It's not my type of fragrance, which is why it didn't score as well, but I do objectively recognize how it can be beloved by many.

At the start I get a strong plum jam accord. It's fruity, but also heady, like a fine red wine. It's got some sweetness, but nothing cloying or thick. Patchouli is earthy and powdery, dark and almost dirty. It's pretty strong and almost pungent: if you hate patchouli, you won't like it here. It almost has a dark chocolate, liquory accord, but it doesn't go all the way there. As the perfume moves on, it shifts into a fruitchouli with some resinous spiciness and some warmth. Jasmine does start to move up as the perfume progresses and it adds a nice feminine, floral vibe. The flower isn't creamy here, but more on the animalic, heady side of things. It dries down wonderfully well as everything starts to tone down into a sweet, earthy and slightly spicy fragrance. It is objectively unisex, but I picture a femme fatale wearing this or a strong, badass, leather jacket woman sporting this scent. Definitely a niche fragrance and something that hasn't been done by many. I recommend you try it out before blind-buying. It won't be making it in my collection as it doesn't fit my taste, but it is truly a unique offering.

Unique Fruitchouli
The opening of Isvaraya smells strongly of blueberries and plums to my nose, almost like a warm syrupy compote made of the two fruits. As it settles a literal smoke note emerges along with a woody patchouli and a voluptuous but restrained jasmine note. On dry down, I'm left with an almost narcotic-heady bouquet of beautiful plum soaked jasmine and woody-waxy patchouli buttressed by thin wisps of smoke and musk. There's a slight undercurrent of salt in the base and unlabeled note that makes it slightly savory (kind of like thyme) which pulls this back from being too sweet.

Isvaraya is a fruitchouli, but in my mind it might be the stripped down and streamlined pinnacle of its genre.

Hands down the most 'noir' fragrance I have ever smelled. It calls to mind a film noir femme fatales who are always impeccably dressed and who are never without sharp lipstick and cigarette.

Reminds me of Zoologist Cockatiel, and that's not a good thing. A powdery, headache-inducing scent

A dark, sensual fruitchouli: a luxurious plum jam, an earthy patchouli, some heady jasmine and a resinous sweetness to it. Not for everyone.

With juicy plum, sweet date, a hint of jasmine + soft leather, this patch is feminine, warm + elegant. Perfect for the office too. Lovely!

Lightly sweet, fruity scent. The combination of plum and patchouli is incredibly beautiful, jasmine doesn't come through for me at all. New favorite!

Essences of early autumn in a slightly melancholic, wonderful mood. Bitter and sweet in good balance. Patch, moss & plum - perfect!

It's quite nice. Unfortunately, the sweet jasmine is a bit too loud on me. If the plum weren't so overshadowed, it would be totally mine.. *_*

Plum blossoms wrapped in patchouli leaves pick delicate flowers in the light of the setting sun. Sounds nice, and it is. But nothing more.

What a pity, the notes sound so good, but it's just a sweet fruit syrup, almost reminds me of an energy drink, hardly any patch comes through.

Smells wonderfully fruity like plum. It's sweet but not too sweet. I really like the scent.
