The Habit Does Not Make The Monk
Do not be distracted by a monk’s habit, a doctor’s white coat, a king's scepter, or a judge’s black robe. By putting on a habit, one is not instantly infused with wisdom and understanding. Why do I bring this up? Cause Artisan Black is allegedly a dark, woody interpretation of Artisan, which introduces a surprising symphony of contrasts with an initial brush of citrus evolving into a deep masculine structure of warm spices and abstracted musk with sensual woody and leathery accents. Actually, black is the color of the handcrafted rattan habit that covers the flask, ain't no the color of the scent's soul. Artisan Black is far from being the perfect misty fragrance.

My first approach with John Varvatos's colognes was Artisan, which captured my senses with the fabulous bland of beachy citrus fruits, juices, peels, leaves, and blossoms and the distinctively handcrafted flask. It's without a doubt a floral scent but with fairly citrus and greenness to feel masculine and wearable. Later, I collected almost all the other JV colognes and Artisan's flankers, yet Artisan Black was a scent I craved to try for a long time but was not available at shops or online, perhaps being a limited edition. Suddenly, a few weeks ago, I was advised about an eBay seller who submitted it, I did my bid and ultimately I won. The final price tag was very advantageous for such a spur-of-the-moment blind buy, merely less than 20 bucks, no matter if it was unboxed and tested a couple of times.
So, I'd be gleeful... Oh man, what a scent. On the back of my hand's skin, Artisan Black is a woody, fresh cologne suitable for warmer weather, perfect for spring and summertime. You'd probably be shocked by looking at the olfactory pyramid but the scent itself is actually not so complex at all and moderately linear.

It opens up with the aroma of bright bittersweet mandarin, lemon, and plenty of blood orange, which is ruling and gives the sparkling vigorous taste of the Mediterranean isles. Blood orange is also known as Arancia Sanguinello or Rossa di Sicilia, is mainly grown in Sicily, south of Italy, and its juice is akin to fresh blood. This wonderful bitter and refreshing opening characterizes the composition even when neroli makes its entrance, and is tinged with a “water” note, but for once, I’m not at all upset by the melon-like calypsone. For a moment, I thought I was smelling Old Spice Classic, they share the same orangey spicy accord. I got some aromatic green notes, the mix of basil, mint, and thyme is fresh yet not outstanding. It is obvious that this is not going to be another citrus cologne.

The heart keeps the orangey tones, spicy green ginger, and lemony coriander seeds melt gracefully with night-blooming floral jasmine, neroli, and African orange blossom, and sometimes it is closely akin to Custo Barcelona. Neroli is not the most masculine nor the most discreet note for a man’s fragrance and it takes a lot of discipline to keep it bright and calm, not allowing it to drown into sweet and dusky waters. As it warms on skin neroli blooms cheerfully capturing the essence of spring. The mixture remains light and dry and in that sense stays closer to the essence of the flower than other neroli scents that focus on the opulence of the extract and end up smelling like heavy musks instead of delicate flowers, yet the bitter orange blossoms in Artisan Black are just blooming.

Then, in the blink of an eye, this spicy and citrus opening turns a bit darker and dusty thanks to the support of the woody and manly base notes such as synthetic orris root reminiscent of woody iris, modern patchouli that does not intrude on the show, white amber, sensual white musk, synthetic Givodan Kephalis, rooty vetiver and various woods finish the scent with an earthy, heady tone,

Artisan Black is much stronger than original Artisan, and if you already own Artisan you could very well add Artisan Black to your collection without feeling you’ve got scent twins on the shelf. Artisan is light and bright, juicy and breezy; Artisan Black has more depth, feels a bit more “masculine” and has better sillage and lasting power, even if it is not a beast. Artisan Black is borderline sweet, but not too sweet for summer wear, and it doesn’t smell like dessert. The recurring criticism, however, is that the scent has poor projection and longevity. But, the weaker projection could actually be an unexpected bonus if you like colognes that are subtle, ones that are not meant to catch the attention of an entire room of people.
In the end, this is the perfect cologne for me not similar to any other scents in my wardrobe and I am extremely content with my purchase. If you are looking for a subtle gentlemen’s cologne with spiced, citrus, and vaguely floral notes, then this is the cologne for you.

An Almost Masterpiece
It is a citrusy, woody fragrance that captured my attention for all of 2 hours. After the allotted time, there's hardly any drydown to remember it by. A shame, really. It could have been a perfect 10 if only it were longer lasting.

A Well-Made Citrus Fragrance
What is supposed to be black about Artisan Black is a mystery to me. It is a pure lemon scent, and as such, it is well made. It has hints of classic cologne, but is much more modern. I take the opulent fragrance pyramid with a raised eyebrow. It may all be true, but what has emerged is a very, very harmonious citrus scent.

If one wishes, Artisan Black can certainly be dismissed as another representative of the current trend of citrus sports fragrances. One would not be wrong in doing so. However, for me, there is an important difference. Unlike most representatives of this genre, I feel comfortable with Artisan Black. I cannot say why.

As a citrus fragrance, I see it almost on par with the characterful L'Eau d'Issey, although it does not have its green-herbaceous note.

Contrary to what the extensive fragrance pyramid suggests, it is a straightforward scent without much development. There is also no time for that, as citrus notes are fleeting. After 2 hours, the entire fragrance collapses in on itself. In this case, that is not a drawback. Citrus notes that last longer are wonders of chemistry and smell like it.

I find this lemon to be unexcited and casual. It is not a hectic bundle of energy, but rather suits someone who can take it easy in the summer heat, perhaps sitting in a street café and enjoying the beautiful day.

Black Market Worker
A good friend recently bought Artisan Black blind for the summer. The seemingly seductive fragrance description online was probably the deciding factor for him, along with the Greek roots of John Varvatos for patriotic reasons. The tasteful bottle with the black lacquer weave ultimately reinforced his decision to order it.

He is not entirely satisfied, and after an extensive test, I now know why.

Of the supposedly many different ingredients, there is only one single note that dominates - and that is lemon. However, it performs its job here so precisely and cleanly that one can speak without exaggeration of one of the best citrus fragrances ever. At times, it reminds me of Dior Homme Sport, just a bit more subtle and less sweet. The main theme is complemented by delicate, fresh-spicy nuances and a gentle, fluffy creaminess. So far, so good - but unfortunately, the scent is quite close to the skin and lasts only from now until just now. While this is not yet a refusal to perform, one can certainly expect more longevity in this price range.

As far as I know, he has now taken the bottle to the office and sprays it as often as possible between clients and colleagues. And when the bottle is empty, at least he has a nice decorative piece.

Spice-Orange
Aside from Rock Vol. 1, which is almost impossible to find, I have now tested all John Varvatos fragrances, and I even own 3 of them. All are at least good, and I hold this brand with Greek roots in high regard. However, Artisan has lost popularity with me over time, as it offers a nice orange scent but is rather one-dimensional and weak. It was only when I used it recently after showering before bed that it really made an impression again. And by the next morning, it was completely gone, which has its advantages. So it was finally time for the Black version.

There are significant parallels; the two Artisans are unmistakably summer brothers, having nothing in common with the syrupy Vintage and John Varvatos. Black and Artisan behave similarly to each other as Vintage does to the Original/John Varvatos.

Black has a wonderful orange-clementine note, which is made serious and dark by spices like thyme or basil, extending to vetiver and a hint of leather in the base. With a few spices, the orange scent isn’t black yet, but it’s heading in that direction. This also makes the fragrance a bit more masculine and office-appropriate. I still prefer the regular Artisan for its orange juice flair a bit more. I also like it a little sweeter. Naming exotic fragrance materials like Kephalis or Serenolides is nice and good, but the scents are hardly more transparent.

The Artisan bottles are handmade top class, but the sillage and especially the longevity (4 hours) are quite limited.

Anyone who already has Artisan definitely doesn’t need Black. Still, it’s a solid all-rounder with a mega look!

A violent blast of minty blood orange as a punch in your face, a heart that explodes with blossoms and a dark drydown rich of dirty leather!

A rather indefinable scent with a hint of spices. Additionally, it quickly faded on the skin and became barely noticeable.

Top note is good, but then it becomes too weak and unfortunately insignificant.

Strong intro with an aquatic mint-blood orange-lemon smoothie. A bit of vetiver. Then I'm scent-blind. It reaches the others.

Tested it in 2020. Smells very strongly of watermelon, orange, and aldehydes?. Still a very good scent.

Very fruity, citrusy. Unfortunately, the scent barely lasts on me or is only close to the skin. For that reason, I wouldn't order this :(
