How Did I Overlook *This* Vetiver Composition?...
Eau de Vetyver opens with just a faint hint of bergamot citrus before quickly absorbing it into its woody spicy vetiver heart. The linear vetiver heart and subsequent dry-down is driven primarily by slightly sweet nutmeg-like herbal woody smelling cypress that couples with effervescent vetiver over a cedar spine. Projection is below average and longevity is very good at just over 10 hours on skin.

Eau de Vetyver was quite the "under the radar" surprise that has eluded me for years. I ended up sampling it for the first time while at my local L'Occitane specifically to try another one of their fragrances that has gotten much more attention and visibility, Eau des Baux. After being highly impressed and purchasing that one, I sprayed the lesser known Eau de Vetyver on a card before leaving the store just to give it a quick sniff and nearly bought it on the spot having done so. Like Eau des Baux, Eau de Vetyver uses a key herbal cypress driven heart accord to power its development, only instead of turning tobacco-like, this time it melds with vetiver to create a slightly nutty, herbal woody composition that really has a completely different feel to it despite the cypress and herbal commonality between the two. The bottom line is if you are looking for an ever-changing, super-projector of a fragrance keep looking as Eau de Vetyver is neither; but despite its linear minimalist nature Eau de Vetyver smells incredible from start to finish and that is much more important to this reviewer, at least, earning it a well-deserved 4 star out of 5 overall rating. Those looking for an excellent smelling herb-laced woody vetiver composition that is extremely versatile should definitely consider sampling this outstanding $52 per 100ml bottle value as you may end up buying it as I did.

Wonderful vetiver scent
I would describe this as sweet vetiver.

Opening is earthy and spicy, then dries down to a very sweet (but not cloying) vetiver. I can clearly detect the nutmeg note in the middle/drydown.

Smells more friendly than Guerlain's Vetiver Extreme, also brighter than Encre Noire.

Undoubtedly a must have for vetiver lovers.

A Gourmand Vetiver from the Cold Homeland!
This Eau de Vetiver is something special. It hardly resembles the classics. Surely, there is less of it in comparison to a Guerlain Vetiver. Instead, there is a very idiosyncratic composition, where Vetiver plays the role of an important building block among several.

The advertised scent notes, such as nutmeg and rosemary, are better forgotten. A completely integrated new fragrance emerges, which can perhaps be traced back to some Vetiver, but otherwise hardly to anything specific.

To me, Eau de Vetiver smells like - Silesian poppy seed cake!

This requires some explanation, as very few know it: On a yeast dough, there is a poppy seed mixture that clearly differs from the usual sweet stuff found in bakeries. Ideally, the still juicy poppy seeds are ground by hand in a specially designed ribbed bowl with a wooden pestle. With such a historical tool, the flavor and scent compounds can be optimally released. The mixture is made with grated almonds, raisins - and importantly - only a little sugar and hardly any vanilla pudding. Crumbles are added on top. Please, walnut-sized and not allowed to melt! Additionally, the crumbles are chilled for 1 hour before being quickly distributed and the whole thing goes into the well-preheated oven. This must be taken into account; otherwise, it won't work. My mother - who else would this recipe come from - distinguished between a "real" crumble cake and the ubiquitous "Rhenish funeral cake," where some melted dough crumbs are wrongly referred to as crumbles. And since you don't want to make brake blocks, a part of the butter should be replaced with margarine!

So, in this way, Eau de Vetiver is. I clearly smell the poppy and something cake-like, but calorie-reduced! No sweetness, no cardboardiness. - that's how a gourmand perfume can be!

Only after a longer wait can Vetiver be perceived in isolation, but the poppy seed cake aroma remains. Who would have thought that so much individuality and unusualness could come from a perfume of the drugstore brand L'Occitane! L'Occitane is practically everywhere, making it easy to test the fragrances. I would be interested to know if others also perceive hints of poppy seed cake here.

Soft Frankincense-Vetiver with a Heart of Forest
I have a well-known love for vetiver scents and also for frankincense aromas. Both are united in this Eau de Toilette, and for my nose, it is a special "treat." Furthermore, this fragrance does not skimp on the spices. Particularly nutmeg and clove seem to play together in the background. From the deepest depths, the breath of a forest rises. Cedar, dark blue-green and cool. Rugged forest edge. "Over-sugared" grasses and branches. And in this background forest, earthy vetiver and sacred frankincense try to deepen their liaison, entwining with each other and not letting go. Neither truly dominates, but they oscillate on their way through the nose. They leave a soft yet cool impression. Forest on a winter morning, with a church or chapel standing in the middle. Inside pleasantly warm, subdued greenish light, fragrant atmosphere, silence. Outside bright, pale blue sky, play of light and shadow, frosty air and tranquility. Aside from the soft rustling of some forest animals. A somehow soothing atmosphere, dreamlike yet strangely real. These are the images that I see before my inner eye when smelling "Eau de Vetyver" by L'Occitane. After several tests in our L'Occitane store, I simply had to acquire this fragrance, even though I already have several vetiver scents. But this one is "different." Because of the frankincense. No vetiver I know has that. Longevity is relatively good for me, sillage moderate but also perceptible to me over a longer period. (Usually, other noses perceive the perfume more). Well-executed blend. Compliments to the perfumers!!

Vetiver Emulator
Part III of my little Occitane trilogy.
After lingering around this scent from Occitane for a long time, I recently had to make a move after rumors about its discontinuation started to surface and persisted.

So, about the fragrance: The opening is a burst of cypress, already known from Eau des Baux. There might be a bit of pink pepper in there. Also a few other spices - definitely clove. Vetiver - yes, there's a bit of vetiver. A sweet vetiver. But it seems more like vetiver is being emulated. Only in the drydown does it become more prominent. Important: frankincense, a lot of frankincense. I find that frankincense often gives fragrances a certain waxy note. I perceive that quite clearly here. All in all, the opening seems quite masculine to me, to be honest. A bit old-fashioned too. However, that settles down after a while. Then it becomes sweet enough to be quite wearable for women as well. A woman should just wait 10 minutes before leaving the house. By then, the daddy vibe has mostly faded. At least, that’s what I was officially told by a Parfumo Premium member. It remains a dark, sweet, slightly woody, frankincense-infused vetiver.
The difference to Lubin Vetiver, another frankincense-vetiver? The Lubin feels ochre, rooty-mossy, slightly musty to me. I associate that most closely with forest floor in autumn with damp leaves. A bit of Mitsouko in its soul.
With Occitane, I think of dark green with black speckles. Perhaps the poppy from Silesian poppy cake (see Apicius) or the frankincense. The unlisted cypress gives it a coniferous character. Something ethereal from the tree resin.

The sillage seems medium, longevity is okay.

Wow..
Citrusy with a clear hint of nutmeg and woody notes. Vetiver and a classy smokiness are blended in. Really well done.
Discontinued? Why?*

A somewhat strict woody-earthy vetiver with rugged charm. More for vetiver lovers. That's why I like it. Alternative!

Two minutes of citrus sorbet, then a crispy poppy seed strudel with malt candies is served. Juicy-soft vetiver in the dry down. Delicious!

This is what you call a benchmark fragrance. Others will have to measure up to this one. Woody resinousness at a high level. Hats off!

A finely woven scent of green notes (vetiver, resins, and for my nose, bergamot), with citrus sprinkles, dry wood, and resin.

Fresh-woody, as invigorating as it is soothing. Indispensable in the long run. (Please bring it back!)

Light, mild, fresh, green nature guy, but in the end it smells a bit too much like scented soap.
