The Bay Rum phase is over! Long live the spices!
As I can see from the sparse fragrance pyramid, there are only three ingredients supposed to be in the perfume: pepper, geranium, and bay rum.
At first, I can only catch a faint hint of the rum, then it disappears! But hold on... The above information is incomplete anyway. Fortunately! Because alongside the pepper, a whole lot of other spices emerge. Foremost among them is nutmeg, whose entourage likely consists of cardamom, clove, coriander, hyssop, thyme, and more. It seems like an entire shipment for a spice shop has been processed here. The rosy geranium stays nicely in the background, but its fresh-floral-spicy aura gives the entire scent a cheeky little touch.
The longer Epices lingers on the skin, the more complex and profound the spice theme becomes.
For me, it is a very interesting, unusual fragrance with a high recognition factor. Only after several hours does the sillage weaken. Applied in the morning, a refreshing spray might be considered from noon onward. Well done and good!!!

A bunch of spices!
First whiff: bergamot; or something else, very fresh. And then immediately: a bunch of spices! But really. More like a punch of spices. And that stays quite a while. A lot of pepper. At the beginning, something floral shines through. I suspect it’s more like pink pepper. And pepper. But more than one type of pepper; in very different ways, aromatic, mild, spicy, not biting or sharp; I think of long pepper. Over time, something cinnamon-like comes in. To my nose, allspice lies on the path between cinnamon, cloves, and pepper. It’s no coincidence that allspice is also called clove pepper. Maybe that’s in there too. But please don’t expect a Christmas spice scent. The name says it all. Of course, you can sniff out all sorts of spices. And they are probably in there. An analytical approach doesn’t reveal more about the scent. It is balanced in its entirety and doesn’t want to be more than it is: spices.
I find it interesting that Epices, despite the pepper, remains quite cool throughout. This may be due to the fresh bergamot splash (or whatever it is) at the beginning. More towards the end, I notice something like a spicy cedar. Well, definitely old wood.
I have never smelled anything like this before. I imagine an old wooden box that has been sitting in my aunt’s kitchen cabinet for decades. That’s where all the good spices were stored. And sometimes you would sneak up to this box, lift the lid, and take a deep breath of the tightly intertwined spice scents. And then another one.
Very self-assured scent with beautiful sillage. I like this scent so much that I want other people to notice it too. I know that the scent is supposed to be very old. That fits. But the scent has rightly endured to this day; it has something timeless. And I would expect this scent more from an English perfume house; there’s quite a bit of gentleman in it. Sometimes I wear this scent very late in the evening. If I pay close attention and listen carefully, I can faintly hear it: "Succumb to the temptation of wanting it all."

Little anecdote: I looked at the meager scent pyramid here on Parfumo before I got the scent. The deciding factor for my choice was bay rum. I like a rum note in fragrances. (Is someone laughing already?) No, Epices doesn’t smell like rum at all.
Today I know: Bay rum is more like bay or bay rum tree and a laurel plant. Thanks, Wikipedia! I laughed. At myself. I won’t part with Epices, though.

Persistence is the Path to Tradition
Hasty decisions and a constant desire for change are just as little part of my personality as, for example, the wish to always own the newest car. Instead, I sometimes observe with a mix of satisfaction and wonder, steering my 22-year-old car, the hectic hustle and bustle around me. Good things are worth preserving - and sometimes rediscovering… The past fascinates me :).
So I am interested in scents and their timeless secrets, whether reformulated or not - I want to make their acquaintance.

We are in the year 1931, during the time of the Great Depression. The electron microscope and the first "living car" (motorhome) are introduced - and little Mikhail Gorbachev sees the light of day. I try to see the scents in their temporal context - this time the "Epices" from the house of L.T. Piver (since 1774).

I must mention that the fragrance pyramid provided here is not complete. The "Epices" is undoubtedly complex (Yagatan speaks of a spice cocktail), yet none of the ingredients pushes forward throughout its duration - rather, all participants harmonize so splendidly with each other, like musicians in a large orchestra. The components are so finely interwoven that together they create a wonderfully balanced scent. The yawning that sets in immediately after application, when citrus notes still dominate, gives way to an increasing curiosity for me as the fragrance develops…YES! - There is something to discover here! I make the acquaintance of cedar, which pulls back just in time before the often annoying pencil-like quality takes over. Its ambitions are curbed by the baton of sandalwood with a peppery hint of cinnamon and allspice. The flinching of some readers at the word cinnamon is just as unfounded as the eye-rolling of those who dislike pepper or allspice & cloves - everything is present in moderation. After a few hours, vetiver takes on a stronger role and provides my nose with a gentle grounding. At the same time, it engages in a duet with light musk and conjures, likely with amber, a wonderfully soothing warmth. In the later development of the fragrance, I occasionally have an association with "Silver Musk".
A truly exciting and friendly scent, not a sillage monster, I rate this a solid 7.5 in this category. What is stunning about the "Epices" is its longevity. After 10 hours, it is closer to the skin, but still clearly perceptible on the wrist when waving around.
Although I cannot yet look back on a four-digit test series, I have not smelled a similar scent before. It could perhaps be a distant relative of "Obsession for Men", although a direct comparison is not permissible. The rather masculine orientation of the symbolism is rightly carried by the "Epices" for me.
Compared to Yagatan's photo, the bottle has hardly changed, only the cap has become a bit more delicate and the ship with its set sails has given way to a lovingly simple design. For me, it is already a favorite due to its lack of affectation. The feel and function of the spray unit are without any faults.
Thank you L.T. Piver for the time travel and the experience of "Epices" - my testing recommendation!

The Scent of Adventurers
We are in the year 1931. The ship slowly pushed through the waves. On its journey along the old spice route through Guatemala, the Caribbean to Brazil, Ceylon, and India, and further to the African coast, it had loaded the most valuable spices and woods for fragrance production: cardamom, pink pepper, cinnamon, sandalwood, St. Thomas pepper, geranium, cedarwood, and vetiver. Eagerly awaited in Paris, this resulted in a spice cocktail encapsulated in a perfume that remained unique: no imitators, no known predecessors.
The scent of Epices is dominated by spices, softened by amber and musk, yet it retains a certain sharpness. Not a scent for every day, but for special moods.

P.S.: I assume that the information on basenotes.net is correct and that Epices is the new name for "Un Parfum d'Aventure" by Piver, whose old designation was probably considered a bit too cumbersome.

It's not really that peppery. More like a dry bouquet of spices with allspice and a hint of sandalwood in the foreground. Elegant-rustic. Rounded.

Cool & warm spice in a cedar box: earthy, leathery, rosy, almost fruity, overcoming contrasts. Beautiful scent with a gentle tone.

Forget the pyramid: Spicy mandarin, geranium, vetiver, cedar, amber, musk/castoreum. An exciting scent with depth like leather too!

A somewhat lighter version of Parfum d'Aventure from the same maker. What is exciting-spicy in P d'A remains undefined here.

Weak and unworthy Bay Rum that doesn't even highlight the pepper. Mild wood water with gentle spice. Pointless.

Classic elegance paired with spicy modernity. Initially fruity, later floral-green, and finally spicy-leathery. Great scent!

A fine-spicy and complex scent. I've never smelled anything like this combination - it has rightly endured since 1931.
