Digestif not dessert

Cuoio dei Dolci is a bright, herbal leather that belies its gourmand-sounding name by taking a bitter, anisic route to deliciousness rather than via the edible notes associated with gourmandise, such as chocolate, caramel, or vanilla. I thought this was going to be a syrup-and-amber fest, but it is really not. Think digestif rather than dessert.

Although Cuoio dei Dolci retains its cool-toned snappiness throughout, the addition of a creamy, nutty vetiver and cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove in the later stages of the perfume does warm things up, forming the impression of fine nubuck leather massaged with a reddish paste of finely ground spices. Despite the slight increase in warmth and ‘deliciousness’, I never really find Cuoio dei Dolci to be the gourmand fest that reviews make it out to be. For me, that is a positive.

One downside of the Cuoio dei Dolci, however, is its poor longevity for a perfume in oil format, as well as a slight flatness of expression. It runs from fresh-herbal to creamy-spicy in the space of an hour, after which, well, the party is over, and everyone has gone home.

Cocoa Leather Impressions

A long, long time ago, not aeons, but a few days, since I last evaluated a leather fragrance. Cuoio dei Dolci will not make it into my collection, yet we have here a veritable scent of this genre. Unlike Widian, Ombre, and so on, you don't need a leather jacket to apply it. A little joke, of course, there are many better leather fragrances than the ones mentioned, and the one reviewed here is certainly among them, as I may subjectively proclaim. In fact, I am drawn to the brand behind it anyway, as there is a backstory to each fragrance. This is not completely made up and full of pathos, which grounds the brand and makes the fragrances shine with sympathy. Enough of the preamble:

The scent begins leathery, slightly oily, reminiscent of lamp oil. Cuoio feels immediately familiar, probably due to the cuddly vanilla note. Conversely, this circumstance means that this work is constantly close to the skin. The effect of the beaver is not simply leathery but offers a hint of animalic, wonderfully blended here with the gourmand notes. The cocoa is neither sweet nor bitter, but used consistently in combination with the ripe vanilla; the leather is neither sweetly botched nor overly creamy. Like gentle wisps of incense, the pair caresses the leathery impressions, adding depth and assisting in creating a mystical nuance. Of course, the cocoa softens the rough, unruly element, sometimes a touch too much.

Undoubtedly, the house has a kind of signature tobacco, which resembles that of Mecca Balsam, comparisons are inevitable and may smell too similar for some. There are fine facets that create different fragrances in this context. Overall, we also have this olfactory La Via del Profumo cloud, this Guernica-esque jumble that works along the scent. In this respect, it is successful, and for gourmand-leather lovers, I would like to make a recommendation. For myself, it is a touch too sweet and delicate.
