The Fear Opponent
So, now I have put it here, now I should also say something about it! Many here are often scared by the name Castoreum (beaver musk) and immediately associate it with something negative, stinky, and dirty. This is not the case when you consider the scent alone and objectively. Castoreum has been highly valued in the world of fragrances for decades and is continually used, becoming indispensable among the great perfumers worldwide. For many who are not familiar with this note, if it is included in a perfume, they probably wouldn’t even notice it if they didn’t know. If you were to ask them why they find this perfume so attractive and pleasant, they might answer: Because it smells incredibly intoxicating, alluring, sensual, warm, protective, powerful, and intimate! Castoreum is classified as a masculine note, whereas civet is considered a feminine note. Castoreum is one of the most masculine notes that can be added to a perfume. When you smell Castoreum in a diluted form with alcohol, several associations come to mind. The first is leather. Very old and damp-warm leather. By the way, it is very easy to confuse with real leather! As it develops, smoky accords creep in, comparable to the smell of a campfire or smoky, earthy, smoldering peat. Very warm and soothing and by no means repulsive. Quite the opposite is true. Castoreum smells like smoked and damp-warm leather. It has a very protective and territorial aura that it builds around a wearer. It is used in aromatherapy to reduce stress, anxiety, and hysteria, which actually works. When it is sprayed in a room, it unconsciously shows everyone who the master of the house is. It has a very dominant aura, and this impression is not even negative. Castoreum radiates immense power, sovereignty, and grandeur. One can easily imagine what this note did in a men’s perfume like Antaeus before it was reformulated or in several other old classics. Castoreum gives every fragrance an intimate, leathery, and cozy warmth and makes an ordinary leather note special and deep. Personally, I also wear Castoreum pure on my skin. At first, it is very strong for the first few minutes but fades relatively quickly. Since it fundamentally only has a development in intensity, after a while, only a strong smoky but delicate leather accord remains. No one would suspect that it represents an animal secretion. Unless you say so! By the way, I have also layered Castoreum with several of my fragrances that also contain beaver musk in the base note, like Antaeus. This combination is very impressive. It brings you very close to the good old days, or I would say,...you (man) have arrived!
So just be brave, go for it!
What could possibly happen? In doubt, it can be washed off or you feel deeply relaxed, well-protected, and very self-assured with it!
Castoreum is a fear opponent,... however one may understand it!
