Summer, Sun, Sunscreen

On one of the hotter spring days, I wandered through the city, enjoyed the sun, and had the thought: "Hey, you could look for a summer fragrance." I considered Jil Sander's Sun or Sport, but the rather colorful box of Summer Splash caught my attention and I decided to test it.

I immediately noticed positively that it was not an aquatic scent, but rather left a nice warm, sunny-lemony impression. The absence of sweet notes also suited my taste, and something subtly floral seemed to come through. So much for the top and heart notes...

It should have made me cautious that Summer Splash was only available in the giant bottle at a fairly reasonable price. In everyday testing, it turned out that the scent reminded me of sunscreen after a short time. Somewhat synthetic and more reminiscent of a drugstore than a perfume shop. It was hardly noticeable on the skin and disappeared quite quickly. To feel fresh all day, I would have had to reapply regularly, but the giant bottle was simply too unwieldy for my handbag.

I assume that the manufacturer was thinking more of a body spray with this fragrance, one that provides a cooling effect during hot summer temperatures. For this reason - and because of the rather nice opening - it stays at 50%.

The Year of Strange Summer Scents is Here

The last one in my test series today.

Hmm, .... hmm...... I'll start with the bottle. We can't say it's silly, so let's say the color combination is inspired by the makeup colors prescribed for this summer: suntan and turquoise. This is supposed to evoke a Caribbean feeling. I find turquoise on the eyelids quite borderline, but the bottle doesn't convince me either. The color families don't match, they clash. But the bottle feels good in the hand, so that's something.

Since the incomparable Lancaster Concentrate (the black one, which unfortunately has weakened a lot after reformulation), Lancaster hasn't brought much convincing to the market. The scents are nice, but you don't miss them when they're gone.

This one will probably meet the same fate. The magnolia doesn't harmonize with the orange variants any more than turquoise does with golden brown! The opening is pleasantly fresh, yes, but the magnolia immediately bites me, which I don't get along with anyway. This subsides after a while - I agree with my predecessor, it is somehow synthetic - and a fresh and (yes, again!) slightly woody base remains relatively well, but not too strong.

Aside from the magnolia, it's quite nice, but also a bit boring. I prefer the more extravagant Roberto Cavalli Aqua as a summer scent.

Not really beautiful, but still an authentic summer scent...

... was one of my first thoughts that crossed my mind. In search of a summer fragrance, the bottle caught my eye with its beautiful colors. Upon closer inspection, it does seem cheap. It strongly reminds me of a hair conditioning spray and is otherwise not a feast for the eyes or particularly well-crafted.

So I spritzed it on and immediately started to ponder. Where do I know this scent from? Strongly synthetic yet associated with such pleasant feelings. Until it suddenly hit me. The fragrance smells exactly like the after-sun lotion from Sundance (the in-house dm brand). Instantly, I am reminded of warm summer evenings. Freshly showered, tired from swimming, and in a good mood from extensive sunbathing. Neroli packs a punch and the bergamot provides subtle, zesty accents. In the heart note, the scent becomes significantly more floral and somewhat cumbersome, yet lacks anything fresh or radiant. It never becomes overwhelmingly sweet or excessively aquatic. I miss that light, clear, and transparent quality in Summer Splash to wear it all day long in summer. For a cozy summer evening, it’s certainly not wrong. The base is pleasantly woody, albeit only minimally. Overall, the scent progression is very fluid and doesn’t undergo any significant changes.

The sillage is adapted to a summer scent, clearly noticeable but not intrusive. The fragrance lasts about six hours.

I would not consider a purchase, as the scent is too synthetic for me and its effect seems to unfold more in the evening hours. Moreover, the after-sun lotion is much cheaper ;-)
