Strangely Charming: The Wind of Freedom Blows
What is freedom? It could be finding the right balance in public life while going wild in the private one. But everyone is free to give their interpretation of freedom. Many "freedom fighters" in the world are peacefully trying to assert their rights by placing flowers in the gun barrels of those forces taking liberties. Charming Freedom is a discreet, well-balanced, soft, slightly smoky, and classy fragrance. It is not disruptive, nor innovative, but still pleasant. More, it is the sourest and of the four pieces in the same collection.
The cologne opens with a loud explosion of Italian citrus cocktails paired with notes of crunchy apple. There are vivid, vibrant notes of bergamot, sweet and sour grapefruit, and green apple. I have a strong barber vibe as the citrus blast subsides, which is not bad at all. Sour yet sensual, this refreshing cocktail of initial freshness pours into the purely floral heart.
The ingredients mention geraniol and alpha-isomethyl-ionone, which makes me think of touches of rosy geranium and aqueous violet leaves in the middle. It is a metal heart, which makes me exclude a dusty iris in favor of wet violet. Indeed, it is elegant, like a floral cascade of green pelargonium leaves, light violet, and herbaceous blue lavender. There is a lot of lavender along with a slightly smoky and leathery accord, which remains more in the background. It's not a natural, leathery fragrance for my nose.
At the bottom, I perceive a kind of smoky, woody, and vaguely earthy sparkle combined with a delicate finish of soft suede. Hints of mild smoke such as olibanum, coumarin, musky cedarwood, and balms modulate and combine with gentle spices. Last, all the sweetness of the tonka bean gives the essence a very sensual texture. I certainly get a lot of tonka bean, but probably a more very crunchy green apple overall. The sweet and sour flavor of the apple comes and goes for the entire lifetime, never fading away.
Charming Freedom is undoubtedly a very fragrant cologne. It is moderately dry and fresh, almost cold, absolutely not creamy or edible, slightly fruity and quite bitter, adult and pleasantly reassuring. It includes a sweetish side from tonka beans, which, combined with violet leaves and geranium, makes this fragrance genuinely addicting. Initially, it borders on being a fougére-aromatic style perfume but then becomes floral, sweet, and musky as it dries. It is perfect for a daily event or a night out; whether in the office, at the pub, or lunch, it is fine anyway, but it also looks great on an autumn day of leisure. It will perform best during the fall and spring but can handle the moderate heat of summer nights quite well. It is harmless enough to be worn casually or to work. Longevity is okay; I've done several hours more or less, and the sillage is moderate, perfect for a workplace. Finally, it is not a unique perfume, and it reminds me a little of Riflesso as a reference. I would consider Charming Freedom a bargain. It's a great deal that has a little bit of everything.
