For those who find Sauvage not herb enough
MCM is not exactly known for men's fragrances, so they first have to prove themselves there. How does one quickly get a foot in the door? Apparently, by first copying one of the most successful men's fragrances of the last 10 years.
The fragrance we have here is a, let's say, "interpretation" of Dior's modern classic. Take the well-known Sauvage DNA, make it a bit spicier, a bit more herbal, a bit darker, and add a hint of wood. Bam, done!: MCM Onyx.
It's not bad, but also not convincing. The "twist" is rather weak and also brings a quite strong synthetic note that, while not massively disturbing, does somewhat diminish the overall impression compared to Sauvage Eau de Toilette.
The fact that MCM Onyx is a bit more herbal also makes it less versatile. Sure, it works even better for business now, as it feels more serious, but leisure, everyday life, and parties are now rather off the table.
The sillage is very good and pronounced, but it noticeably decreases after about an hour. With a weak 4½ hours for an EdP, it then falls to skin level. Considering the price, which is also higher than that of Sauvage Eau de Toilette, that's really too little.
The bottle design (which has already been implemented in some other MCM fragrances) is also something different, but not really cool, rather borderline. Still, props for the attempt to be original.
