Sharp and Spicy Incense
Having now reached the bottom of my vial of Miller et Bertaux SPIRITUS, it's time to weigh in. That's right: it's now or never, as I'll not be adding a bottle to my collection.

What an enigmatic composition this is. The opening packs a punch of what seems to my nose to be coriander. There is some serious sinus-clearing activity going on. Shortly thereafter, I start noticing other spices, including probably ginger but more likely galangal. This is on top of a dominant frankincense foundation. The overall composition seems rather culinary to me, and I do not detect much in the way of flowers, whether rose or otherwise. I wish that I could figure out what the other spices are. Maybe turmeric? I don't know but they are dense and slightly oily, it seems.

All of this may not sound very appealing, I realize, but the spices are kept in check by the frankincense so that the overall effect is not unpleasant at all and even somewhat likable. There is a sharpness here, and combined with the fat-soluble spice mixture, I suspect that SPIRITUS could turn into a rank soap scent on some skins. It's definitely pushing my own limits on culinary spices, but people who wear Serge Lutens perfumes well may like this one a lot.

Yes, a Friend!
This fragrance is a good friend! Unlike other favorite scents, it doesn’t take me on a dream or memory journey, but is simply there, wrapping me warmly like a light wool sweater. There is a restrained, dry freshness (ginger), calm seriousness (frankincense), a hint of dry flowers (rose) on a quiet, woody base. The name is well chosen: the scent doesn’t cling, rather it wafts around me (“Spiritus”), yet is still serious and grounded (“Land”). After about 4 hours, the dry, spicy, warm steppe wind subsides. I happily reapply; it’s never too much for me. A fine, reliable friend in all situations, who never bores. The bottle is simple, beautiful, and playfully winks with two glass beads at the base (... and it surprisingly survived a fall from my open bag onto asphalt quite well - also in this respect: reliability!).

A Balsamic Rose
Spiritusland by Miller et Bertaux is, despite its opulent ingredients, a rather light, subtle fragrance. Oh dear, this scent is quite difficult to describe!

So, it is a rose fragrance, and the rose is actually quite dark. But it has been used here very thoughtfully. It is present, but it does not push itself to the forefront. Nothing here is pushing forward; it is a perfume full of modesty!

The rose meets a base that is not as woody as the notes might suggest. I perceive something creamy, mild here; no worries, no cheap musk, rather something resinous. Is that the tobacco? Just a hint of incense gives a vibrating depth. And the ginger adds a nice citrusy spice to the whole. It is responsible for the sunny, optimistic undertone of this fragrance.

But what is the enumeration of notes worth! Especially here, where everything is reserved and subtle, it doesn't say much. It is important to note that everything has been well "married" together; thus, the impression of a distinct note arises, rather than a collection of the listed components. And this fragrance is truly beautiful: reserved, mild, creamy, light brown-tinged woodiness, floral. It has the style of a light musk fragrance, only that there is no musk in it, thus no soapiness or excessive sweetness. The scent progression is quite uniform.

An experience among the fine rose fragrances!

This Land is your Land, this Land is my Land
This famous folk song, written in 1940 by Woody Guthrie as a counterpoint to the patriotic "God bless America," and since then played and sung at countless campfires, tells of the beauty of nature, travel, freedom, and happiness.
Everything is possible, boundaries exist only in our minds, come with me and feel the spirit of the land.

Spiritus/land is a simple fragrance, in the best sense of the word.
Spicy, clear, clean, as if made for a life in nature. Nothing pushes forward, nothing takes itself too seriously.
A modest, yet not inconspicuous presence, whose components are so well intertwined that I cannot name them individually.
There is no development of the scent. It is there and claims its place, providing calm and security, a shoulder to lean on.

Initial blast of ginger is a bit too sharp. But then it calms down. Rose is very present to my nose, smells alot like rose soap. Original.

A warm incense note that dissipates quickly to leave behind a pleasant dusty plastic note. Styrofoam and pepper. Gentle but austere. Lovely!

Intriguing dark rose mixed with weird kind of incense, which smells more like cutting styrofoam with hot knife.

A likable brand with angular, minimalist scent concepts, each taking a different direction: here incense, spicy, floral. Good!

Authentic ginger + spices in the opening (Ginger Ale, I swear it!), then soft-powdery flowers with a spicy-woody base.
