Better dead than reformulated
This musk fragrance was iconic for the 80s. A reference musk that unfortunately is no longer produced today, as the musk compound it is based on is banned. Floral at first, then the musk struck with all its power, a single spray was enough.
“Musk Wild Love” wasn’t even reformulated; no, it was completely removed from the program, the company Nerval no longer exists. Perhaps it’s better to part ways with an old love once and for all than to keep chasing after it in diluted form. Meanwhile, perfumes that were acceptable five years ago are also being reformulated. New versions of YSL’s “La Nuit de l'Homme” already exist, even though the fragrance hasn’t been on the market for that long. I digress, but for anyone who might want to read a finely nuanced, elegantly written novel on the topic of “reformulations,” I recommend Percy Kemp’s book “Musc.” It amusingly and thoughtfully describes how a man breaks down over the change of the formula of “his” perfume in a psychologically comprehensible way. One might find the approach of the novel exaggerated, but Kemp succeeds in creating a realistic portrait of a man who understands his perfume as an integral part of his personality and who cannot live without this component. The text is very worthwhile both in French and in the excellent German translation by Veronika Cordes (Argon-Verlag, 2002). Those who prefer audiobooks should acquire the version brilliantly narrated by Christian Brückner on three CDs. Brückner’s voice adds an additional layer of meaning and enjoyment to the often laconic narrative.
Kemp’s novel was published in France in 2000 (by Albin Michel), when the reformulation frenzy was still in its early stages. “Musc” is a MUST for every perfume fan. But even for those who have not yet engaged with the world of fragrances, “Musc” could be a delightful and elegant introduction to the subject. The audiobook is a production of WDR 5 from the series “Parlando” - Edition Christian Brückner.
