The Night of the Nomad
How many worlds and how many images had it been since he was out there in the wilderness? All the adventures, the wanderings through the wonderful, the encounters with the threatening, the banal. It felt like an eternity to him. A nomad needs a tent for the night. His was made of animal hide, worn and old.
When he set it up, harsh spices exhaled bitter mugwort and camphor from the places where ashes still lingered from all the past fires, the moisture of the rain, the dark oil from birch tar. And it was earth that he smelled when he crawled in at night, the charred splinters of the gnarled woods still smoldering inside. In it, he saw a glow, tiny warm flames, the balm dancing amber, tomorrow the world outside would be wild again, for today he was home.
