Klezmer's Dream
Django had only three fingers, but he played as if he had a hundred. Klezmer couldn't stop thinking about him. He pushed his shabby guitar aside, sank down onto his bedding, and stared at his calloused fingers. Then at the small jar of Gitana's ointment. It smelled of wormwood, camphor, and herbs. He applied it to his battered hands, where the scent became one with the roots he had pulled from the earth during the day.
Klezmer rummaged for his tobacco, found it under his backpack, the mulch, and the moss. He liked that; the damp ground kept the tobacco moist, just like his clothes and the musty mattress. An hour of indulging in the black Temeswar tobacco, in the scent of the bark, the rain in the park, then he dug into the leather bag that usually carried his guitar and was worn from the weather, the sweat of sleep from hot summer nights, the animals that spent time with him, and the traces of ointment from past sufferings.
Then the notes flowed in his dream like balsamically sweet medicine from resins amidst all the scents that slowly faded over hours like sounds, over the old guitar strings. Until Klezmer began to play in spirit, melancholic and deep: Djelem! Djelem!
