A beaver smoking a cigar
Unutamam is a fitting name - it's an unforgettable scent. "A beaver smoking a cigar" might sound like a corny joke, but to my nose, it's an accurate description of the drydown phase. The opening is a whole 'nother story. It's incredibly aromatic with a surprisingly refreshing quality. Rosemary gives off a piney nuance and juniper adds a cooling vibe.

Once oregano enters the stage, the scent profile ventures into a spicy and herbal direction. That said, it maintains its cold freshness due to a photorealistic mint accord which reminds me of harvesting mint leaves in my herb garden. Amber and floral notes are vague - if at all present - adding understated creamy and warm facets. I can pick up some sweet, clove-like spiciness from carnation, but that's it.

After an hour, Unutamam's animalic nature starts coming to life. Miguel Matos doesn't give a damn about IFRA regulations, but I doubt actual castoreum was used in a Nishane scent. Either way, it's close to the real thing. Combined with cistus, the drydown is about very dry and borderline filthy leather. It's animalic, but not overbearing and quite wearable.

Looking at the caramel note, one might hope for a sweet salvation. That couldn't be further from the truth. It enriches leather with a smoky sensation, resulting in a sexy tobacco facet. To me, it smells better and more realistic than any tobacco absolute, almost like smoking a high-end cuban cigar. It's rounded out by slightly damp oakmoss.

This isn't a daily wear perfume, but one that makes a statement. Great with a leather jacket or dressed in all black. I only wear it when I'm going out for drinks and cigars with the boys. The longevity and projection are nuclear and the juice itself is brown and sticky, so go easy on the sprays and don't stain your clothes.

a beast named Unutamam
Beware this isn’t your average day to day fragrance, this is art and just like what you’d see on the runway at a fashion show this isn’t an everyday wear, you’ll hardly be able to wear this but if you find it in yourself to wear it do it outdoors otherwise you may regret it.
This is an amazing scent, very mature, very grown up so if you’re under 30 don’t even consider it and if you are over 30 still proceed with caution.

Unutamam starts of ver herbal, very green with a lovely natural but dirty mint front and center and it gradually transitions and you get more oregano and oak moss with hints of lavender here and there, very earthy and animalic. Just lovely!

This is a great fragrance, very daring so it’s also challenging but it’s nuclear, very powerful stuff hence my warnings.

Don't laugh - this smells like me!!
The short take on Unutamam: No, I definitely won't forget this fragrance. It is so good, awesome, testosteronic, masculine liquid gold. I had to order a full bottle straight away after testing it and am thinking about ordering a back up bottle. (It's only available in 1 ounce bottles!)

Long take: Started out with 2 sprays on the chest from a sample spritzer (stingy amount from these sample sprayers). It's got a pretty punchy opening but settles down in about 30 minutes or so. Overall, quite powerful with spectacular performance. I seldom come across a fragrance with forever longevity. Projection is quite strong but could fill a room if you over spray.

But what does it smell like? Yes, it's definitely very unique. After it settled down, my very first impression that came into my mind was - wait a minute, this smells like me! I'll qualify that with the following scenario:

I get up in the morning, take a shower, apply a strong acting deodorant and then apply an old school fragrance like Quorum or Antaeus - something sorta green and herby. It's in the summer and a very hot day and I've got some hard physical work to do outside. Within minutes, my black t-shirt is soaked. After about 4 hours, I break for lunch. It's a scorcher but very windy. As I sit in the shade eating my lunch, the wind dries up the sweat; my black t-shirt is dry and has white streaks from the salt. The fragrance I applied earlier has greatly diminished. I put my nose under that salt-stained t-shirt and I smell......Unutamam. There's no BO armpit stink - I applied that deodorant and Unutamam doesn't have at any point a cumin type smell. It's just a musky man smell mixed with a very subtle green/herby scent. This outcome so surprised me, so I had to check the reviews. Even more surprise - no one had a similar experience. Oh well, what can I say?

Unutamam is definitely not a blind buy. Sample first. You have to like strong animalics. Although, I wouldn't call this an animalic, it's more like a man-alic. hahaha To classify this as unisex is just plain ridiculous. Of course, anybody can wear any fragrance they want. But most women would not like this fragrance. After the dry down, this fragrance basically makes you smell like a musky man. With only a small amount - perhaps 1 spray or half a spray would give the effect of a body scent instead of a fragrance.

YES - I got a full bottle for myself. Now I'm dreaming about layering potential.

The best of Nishane
Unutamam, an underrated and less talked about fragrance of Nishane. This opens with a blast of aromatic pine, rosemary and oregano. The spicy floral heart of jasmine and carnation starts to open up at around 2 hour mark but the aromatic component is still present through out the development of the fragrance. The dry down is the most amazing part in which caramel is intertwined with oakmoss against a background of animalic leather. The projection and longevity is exceptional, two sprays is all I needed. My only complaint is that Unutamam only comes in a 30 mL bottle, I’d gladly buy a 100 mL bottle of this.

What a Journey
Upon spraying, I am hit with a pungent coniferous smell paired with aniseed. Juniper works hand in hand with mint, giving a cooling sensation. As the piney opening subdues, I start picking up some caramel. Paired with the aromatic herbs – oregano now joining the party – it oscillates between sweet licorice and freshly picked basil. It becomes slightly medicinal, evoking comforting herbal infusions – the kind used to treat all sorts of ailments. As time passes, smokiness starts to develop, with a noticeable pepperiness. Further down the road, this spicy smoke turns into a resinous incense – exceptionally beautiful. A carnation bud slowly blooms, and gently closes the journey.

Now, the elephant in the room (or rather lack thereof): where is the animalic aspect everyone speaks of? I do perceive some facets of castoreum (leathery, smoky, hints of fruits and vanilla), but this is far from the full-throttle beast I was expecting. That goes to show the crucial role skin chemistry plays when interacting with such quality oils!

Miguel Matos performs a spectacular magic trick: notes are so well blended that one becomes the other, while contributing to delightful accords.

A multifaceted and ever-changing masterpiece, and a wonder of blending. No, I won’t forget this one anytime soon. As Wusubi pointed out: be careful where you spray it, the juice is dark enough to stain my skin for a few hours. Shout-out to the bro for this amazing discovery!
