Attenuated l’Heure Bleue
In the same way that Prokofiev’s 2nd violin concerto seems to quote from La Vie en Rose, Noa Noa appears to contain elements of l’Heure Bleue (heliotrope, amber, orange and a piquant moss that resemble orange flower and bergamot).
The problem is, the anonymous creator of Noa Noa hadn’t got the skill of Jacques Guerlain (or Prokofiev) and the melody is too strung out, harsh and bright.
And because Noa Noa is an Amber it doesn’t progress either.
So, despite some weird nuances (cat piss blackcurrant, antiseptic tuberose, violet root) the wacky Amber is bony & static.
Instead of the brilliant Russian in Paris, you get a whole load of balalaika.
