Kalan Parfums de Marly 2019

I also bought the Kalan second-hand. And blind. First of all: I wouldn't recommend that with the Kalan. There are certainly pleasing and streamlined fragrances that do not bother those who are only perceived as "perfume" by the environment. Fragrances that you don't really take to your heart but that you can somehow use up. Not so the Kalan. It has to fit, otherwise you can't wear it. What happened to me was that I became quite curious about Kalan after reading various descriptions. Basically, I haven't been very wrong with most PdM so far (apart from Percival). Then there was a good offer and I ventured onto thin ice. First of all, I have to say that I find the color of the bottle quite strong. It triggers emotions in me, which is perhaps why I bought it blind. In conjunction with some of the descriptions, I had a completely different expectation. I don't think the fragrance fits well in the fiery red bottle. I associate this red with completely different fragrances.
After the first spray, I thought to myself: it's very close to Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum! Not so much in direct comparison, but somehow it is. There is a strange relationship. But BR540 is much sweeter. Kalan starts off dry and a little dusty for me. Perhaps that's where the frequent comparison with old building sites comes from. I have smelled the inside of many old houses, so the comparison cannot be dismissed. It's probably the smell of old wood and clay mortar, but also a little mold (sorry). All this together with a spicy note and a profound sweetness. I can't detect any fresh orange notes at all, the roasted tonka bean is somewhat reminiscent of burnt caramel. And I also smell this burnt note in BR540.
I consider the sillage and durability to be in the upper average range. I tested the Kalan for three days and kept giving it a chance. It is what it is. It doesn't pretend and doesn't try to please everyone. That makes him likeable and authentic. But in the end, it wasn't enough for me. It was liberating to be able to wash it off in the evening and apply a tried and tested evening fragrance to reconcile and relax. That's why the Kalan and I won't be together. Too bad. It's actually a good one. Just not for me.
