More than a masculine Baccarat Rouge 540
So, Parfums de Marly, Sedley used to be nothing at all, right? Various Facebook groups have speculated that Kalan was so quickly replenished due to Sedley's lack of success.
But I'm not a resentful person, you don't lose my favor so quickly and so I jumped at this release. I have now worn Kalan for two days and try to give you an idea of my impression.

Flacon 10/10
The bottle itself is of course well-known and does not differ from the other men's and unisex scents from PdM.
The dark red bottle is really beautiful and looks super noble. I like personally very much and fits also somehow to the fragrance.

Fragrance 8/10
Spray on and...wait, I know you, don't I? Baccarat Rouge 540 from MFK in spicy and stronger. No, it doesn't do him justice. Kalan's not even close to being a clone. I can't tell which notes trigger this association, but it's there.
Kalan starts with a really strong peppery orange. This fragrance is really complex, in the process I can actually perceive most of the notes of the fragrance pyramid. Spicy, woody, slightly sweet and long this pepper. So after one hour I smell Amber, which may be because I don't like Amber :P...
I don't like to divide into gender and gender. If I have to, I'd rather see BR540 on a woman. Kalan is for me a scent for androgynous women or men.

Shelf life 10/10
On both days, I washed Kalan off after eight-nine hours. On the first day I even did some sport for it, around the six-hour mark. I could still perceive the scent well until I washed the dishes.

Projection/Sillage 8/10
Projection and Sillage are already neat, but not intrusive. I might not be Kalan at work, but I wouldn't be Kalan at parties either. Projection and Sillage are somewhere between these two situations.

Conclusion
Mine isn't Kalan, but it's really complex, and I respect that. Unfortunately nobody from my environment likes him :P. He's certainly not a crowdpleaser like Layton, but that's more often the case with niche fragrances

A wild horse that likes to tease.
I admit it: with me too, it was love at second sight. A small splash from the tester enclosed with my PdM order and it disappeared directly into the shallows of my perfume tasting box. Disgusting...dried orange, spices...a wild horse - brrr, stop - absolutely not my case
But had a second tester in the office and tried it there again very carefully. A sprayer - giddy - and about 30min later a compliment from a colleague, although I took the social distancing very seriously. Projection and silage are typical for PdM, the scent is very intense. So you risk to be thrown from the horse if there are too many sprayers.

A week later Kalan has become one of my favourite fragrances. Once you get used to the fresh fruity spice and find out the perfect amount of spray, you have tamed the wild horse and it is very easy to ride. Of course, it can happen that some people turn up their noses when you gallop into the office on Kalan or trot through the subway at the height of summer. Others, however, will be impressed by your appearance, some will even want to stroke the horse.

After about 7 hours he slowly runs out of breath, but that is okay. Brrr - I also need a break. I put Kalan back in the stable in the evening, he will spend the next few days there while I cure my olfactory muscle ache and am satisfied with ponies and donkeys. But every few days I dare to get him out of the paddock - Hup, Hup, Hup - and ride with Kalan towards the sun of a new day.

Classification:

Courtesy: 6/10
Takes some getting used to. Some love it, others find it disgusting (especially at first sight). Also found him far too strange at first. Not necessarily a classic compliment getter, even though I have only received positive to exuberant feedback on the fragrance so far.

Uniqueness: 9/10
Yes, in the drydown I also perceive the BR540 notes, and sometimes the sweet spice reminds me a bit of Tom Ford's Effing Fabulous. Nevertheless, the fragrance is very independent and unique
Suitability for everyday use: 8/10
If one does not exaggerate it with the spray blasts he is also suitable for office use
Suitability all year round: 8/10
I will wear this in F/S as well as in H/W. The spices give it a christmasy touch for the cold season, while the bittersweet orange brings freshness in spring and (sparingly applied) probably also in summer.

Unisex rating: 7/10
Find him unisex, yet he tends to be more of a male figure to me. But in the end it is surely a matter of taste or type
H/S and intensity: 8/10
Lasts for about 8 hours despite the bitter orange notes. With 2-3 sprayers you will be strongly noticed by everyone within a radius of 2 meters. With more sprays you risk headaches. An intense fragrance.

Packaging and bottle: 4/10
As a designer with a penchant for minimalist aesthetics, I don't like the PdM bottles in general. The ostentatious bottles are too reminiscent of pseudo-elitist Alpha-Male CEO shaving water, both in terms of packaging design and bottle. Mallet luxury. But at least the workmanship and material are neat and tidy.

For whom?
Twenties to mid-forties, who like to polarize. Who don't smell like everybody else and don't want to please everybody. Kalan is not an 0815 scent that 0815 people wear at the disco. Not Layton, not Aventus, not Sauvage, not a million. Nevertheless or just because of that, at least in my environment, it is usually very well received (but I'm not a big disco or club goer). Kalan stands out from the crowd and leaves an impression - (for me very) often positive, sometimes negative
What does it smell like? I find it smells like a wet pile of leaves in front of a barbershop, in which one puts dried pieces of blood orange and lavender, and then covers it with spices and herbs. Baccarat Rouge similarity if at all only in the drydown, for me a completely different scent, much spicier. Not a typical PdM, whoever expects Layton/Herod DNA here will be disappointed.

Blindbuy?
In this price category, blindbuys are generally very risky, and even more so with Kalan. Even if you like the sheet music or many other PdMs, I was still a bit irritated after reading the sheet music.

OMG - I have to have that one!!!
My first review, forgive me if something goes wrong ;-)

So, there it is - KALAN!
My first real blind buy in the niche world.

I must confess, I have Ihn blindly treated, after long evaluation of reviews, which were quite positive as well as negative, finally came the 75 ml bottle at a good price to my home, I could not help it.

The mediocre packaging was first a downer, but when then the bright red bottle came to light, it didn't matter at all.
So far, really one of the most beautiful bottles for me in my collection :-) !!
Geile color, is good in the hand and the cap is really huge. (heavy)

With excitement hardly to hold, then the first spray on the left wrist.
OMG - WTF?!
First thought, that smells like freshly mixed limestone or concrete... shit, what did you buy there, that should be him? The so highly praised Kalan from the house Parfums de Marly?!
Fruitiness in the form of blood orange - missing, rather pepper- but full blast.
Well, give him a chance, I thought to myself.

Renewed spray right wrist and in the neck and off to work.
In the car on the way to work then suddenly, hmm, young nice, what right because there so pleasant, so special - ah that's me :-D ! All right, the colleague Kalan apparently needs time to unfold.

All day I noticed this beautiful fragrance and was just thrilled. It takes a bit, and you have to give him time (also vll 2-3 days) - but then he really pops and you start to like him.

It's hard to describe, but it does smell fruity at some point, but rather tart and muted. The limestone smell of the beginning is very strong there, goes with the time (after about 15min I would say) in the background and then unfolds Kalan completely and remains actually linear until the end the same.
Special and "Unique" I find Him definitely!!!
The durability is great and on the clothes you smell him even days later (and then wondered, man what is that for a nice fragrance??? Ah, Oh yes, all right - KALAN! Fortunately in my collection :-)

At the moment actually my signature fragrance. Love it!!! (Him)

It's all about expectations
Lavender, orange blossom, sandalwood, moss?! That's gotta be something for me!
Kalan does not do badly on average here. For a PdM, however, not very good either.

If you read the comments here, you can see that the loyal PdM holder has his problems with Kalan. I know some of the PdM scents from past taster tests and have never been to one of the scents I have tested, which have been highly satisfying for many users. I do not get along very well with fragrances that are gourmand sweet and rather vanilla-heavy. An exception for me is the Acqua e Zucchero from Profumum Roma. Whatever. When it comes to gourmands, I always found many other houses more interesting than the PdM house. My personal impression. Bad smells are therefore not the PdMs.

Despite everything, I am not deterred by past experiences and am open to new fragrances, even from houses I could not be happy with in the past. I also didn't let some comments deter me from testing Kalan, as I had previously let burnt milk and plastic smell.

What can I say? I'm so glad I didn't get scared off and have a bottling sent to me. Sprayed on, I was immediately enthusiastic, because it was a completely different PdM than I was used to from the past. Not a sticky gourmand. None, in meanwhile so many scents occurring vanilla. Kalan opens with blood orange scent, which is really very good to smell out. It starts out altogether orange, floral, spicy, green. In the course of the fragrance, the orange light sweetness decreases a little, but never disappears completely. The overall impression is orange-fruity, somewhat flowery and spicy green. I suppose it is the spicy green that the one or the other, especially PdM lovers can't stand here, it is very different to Herod, Oajan & Co. and in the long run the more dominant impression of the Kalan.

To me, Kalan is a year-round scent. Due to its orangey and somewhat sweetish flowery scent it has something sparkling and refreshing in winter and in the warm season, I imagine that its green spiciness brings a little pep "per" on a warm summer evening and therefore does not come across too sticky. I can imagine him very well on a party night at a beach club.

I've been here on this platform for many years now, haven't really been active here for a long time and haven't done any trial tests for a long time. All the more I am now happy that I had an absolute WOW experience with Kalan for a long, long time. I don't know when the last time I was so enthusiastic about a fragrance was right away. As a result, I directly ordered a 125 ml bottle.

The reason why the fragrance does not go down so well here is for me the expectations. Many PdM fans will have expected something similar to what they are used to from PdM. Sweet, gourmand, oriental, vanilla. For me, it was always the sweet gourmands who couldn't knock me off. That's why I am now all the more pleased to have discovered a new darling for me.

If you don't like Baccarat Rouge, please, please don't be deterred to try the beautiful Kalan. I'm not so good with the Baccarat Rouge and I'm even happier with Kalan
A small note in the margin. I also ordered the Pegasus from PdM as a bottling. I also like this one, but I can only imagine it in the autumn/winter time, because I find it much denser and powdery. On a day with a headache, I wouldn't want to wear Pegasus either. Nevertheless a nice and extremely uniqe fragrance, which will probably make it into my collection by autumn 2020.

So I seem to become a little PdM fan after all! :)

The colour red
... stands in many ways for a certain luxury, passion, but above all success. The sporting comparisons that I like to draw, for example, make me think of England's legendary LFC as the current Champions League champions or fresh champions of the Premier League. If it is less appealing, you don't even have to go so far to find the champions from the Bavarian capital.
The emotional component makes me think of motorsport. The Ferraristi, who are currently taking a longer break from their successful history, or the beautiful two-wheelers from Ducati. Especially with the latter it is impressive to what extent the emotions and passion thrown into the balance over the one or other technical peculiarity (some would also claim inadequacy) deceive away and supposedly let the essential recede into the background.

To reproduce the colour red in a fragrance is an ambitious goal, which in my opinion the creators of Kalan succeeded in an impressive way. The fragrance is captivatingly beautiful and special, has wonderfully gossamer-like polished corners and edges that still offer more than enough profile not to please everyone. Kalan is a character actor and polarized, awakens emotions and passion in me, one of the main reasons why I landed and, above all, stayed on the platform during his time here.
In my opinion, the launch alone, which even the product's well-intentioned contemporaries so often dislike, is simply grandiose. This sandy blood orange, dripping juicy with a subtle blade, gets so much punch in the opening flanked by the pepper that I am immediately with me and the moment and have to think of the pleasure of a good double espresso. And Kalan never seems overloaded at the beginning, never hinting at any time at a promise that it would not keep later.
In the further course of the piece the juicy chord decreases and from the beginning there remains a fruity-harsh melange which makes me think visually of unsweet and of course not Christmas dried blood orange slices. In heart and base Kalan becomes drier, more serious and nestles over the wearer like a pleasantly scented second skin. Especially the Drydown, the heaven on earth, makes Kalan for me a definite men's fragrance of the absolute top class. Not a fragrance that "fools around" with the idea of being unisex, not even for young boys. It is for men, I would say, standing in the middle of life, but of course so calm that he naturally gives a lady the scent with a wink, old school, a lady's heart and soul on her skin.

The color red is my current favorite color.

Violent. Peppery opening = harsh, dischordant. Late drydown is *just* bearable. Not blindbuy safe. Masculine. Huge sillage, great longevity.

Similar to drydown in Oud For Greatness, caramelized spun sugar with a slight bitterness. I don’t see anything unpleasant about it on skin
